Two Karate Teachers Try the VR Boxing Game "Thrill of the Fight". Now, I have played Creed: Rise to Glory in the past, which was a pretty fun boxing game for the Oculus Quest VR headset, but this game thrill of the fight is WORLDS better in my opinion. As a martial artist it lets me to do the super simple stuff... which is fight! I love playing this game for cardio. Its a total blast. Huge shoutout to my boy Zak Ford for helping me out with this!

I think “Shadow boxing on steroids” is the perfect way to describe it. You can train the usual shadow boxing stuff like practicing head movement or working on angles / fundamentals / footwork etc, but it cuts out the middle man of having to imagine someone in front of you. No replacement for sparring but I’ve been doing it and it’s fun as hell lol

@@stevenavalos524 that's a good idea tbh. Oculus just added a way to scan your couch into it. If they added a bag it would reduce mobility, but adding kicks would be worth it. Something I've noticed after seeing numerous people play this on YT, those with actual experience or training in striking do consistently better than those who have none. Even those gamers who've played the game a lot don't do as well as an actual fighter seems to do the first time they play it. I've also noticed the trained fighter causes more overall damage to the AI opponent, they get cut up and bruised all over, than someone who doesn't. Very cool.

@@ArchMithrillas6976 I had the first oculus quest and broke it about 3mos ago. I was playing the game still but it wasn’t my mine form of calorie burn as I began working at a gym and moved towards weight lifting. I’m still down about 25lbs from where I was at in og post. It has helped me manage my stamina though because I hit the heavy bag now and I’m not burning out after only 3 mins. I want another quest might get this 3rd one but the lack of support once a new one comes out is kinda daunting. With the first quest I only broke one controller with a busted battery after I moved. I thought I could buy a new one easily but they cost about as much as a new headset. I have gained much more muscle though and fill my frame out much more. I’m not so focused on the number and more how I feel but I do notice I look better and I’m not the same 250 from that last update. I know I got lower than that but I didn’t feel healthier. That’s not a reflection of the game and more so my journey.

I started using myself.I boxed in my teens and college and was really surprised how the pace is in this game. Thanks for putting this together. TOTF has become my go to cardio workout. I do wish people would stop calling it "shadow boxing on steriods" though. There is a very fundamental difference between the two. In shadow boxing, your imagined opponent can only do what you instruct it to. If it feigns, slips to your right and throws a jab, it's because you told it to. In other words, you'll always be aware what's about to happen in shadow boxing which isn't a very good way to go about training since learning to deal with unpredictability is ultimately what learning how to fight is all about. Opponents in VR boxing on the other hand do move like they would in real life, i.e. unpredictably, making it a far more practical training tool than shadow boxing.

The day I got my vr I got this game and I was sore for a week and a half after a 3 hour marathon and another hour that night. The biggest difference between difficulty modes seems to be how easily you're knocked out. They're obviously faster, more aggressive, harder to knock out etc... but yea you have to be much more careful. Overall though I think this is one of the best workouts on vr. Does it make you a better fighter? It's debatable since it can effect your form if you're not disciplined. But it definitely helps to strengthen your upper body and it's great for cardio. I love this game and it's definitely getting me into shape and it's a blast.

The hits "not registering" could be due to the VR headset you use! The oculus quest uses a camera tracking system, which isnt perfect yet: if the controllers arent in view of the cameras on the headset(like when you do spinning backfist), they just wont register. Something like a Valve index or Vive Pro (VR headsets that use base stations) would probably be ideal imo. I have the Index, which isnt wireless, but the tracking is perfect and more responsive. Wont lose tracking in any situation, and you can even buy Vive tracker pucks to stick to your feet for some kicking action! (if the game allows it, i think only 1 combat game has this feature right now= blade and sorcery). I think the ideal setup, right now, would be a Vive Pro with the wireless attachment

@MCHuang 3 года назад
You are right in that camera tracking in theory cannot match the accuracy of base station tracking, though I have found the Oculus' latest headsets to be surprisingly accurate. Even for games where you may sheath a weapon behind your back or throw things to the side, it has been much more precise compared to some well regarded WMR headsets

While it's very likely true that you can't solely use this to become a "good boxer", it can certainly take you from zero to pretty damn decent. Like most things, it's all about what you put in. The default difficulty settings are largely nonsense due to the opponents being so slow and timid. The real fun starts when you adjust the settings manually. Turn off the automatic multiplier and set it to 1x. Turn on drift protection. Set the opponent chin to 110%, power to 110%, and everything else to 200%. Now you won't be playing shopping mall mannequins. Have fun in there! Cheers.

I tried this today, 100% agree. If you already have the proper form/fundamentals down (which is NOT difficult to learn!) this can be a great tool for shadow boxing, cardio, and visualizing an opponent when you dont have sparring partners.

This game is so much fun!! I was thinking about making custom boxing gloves to fit over the controllers so I can hit a heavy bag (light) while I’m sparring in game!!
@MCHuang
@MCHuang 3 года назад
I imagine it would take quite some custom fabrication to make gloves that won't block the sensor rings. An easier way to add to your workout may be to use resistance bands

For anyone thinking of getting it, the blocking is kinda janky as you only have gloves to block with, no arms obviously. Also, the AI can't seem to adapt if you switch southpaw and just keep crossing haha... also the hitboxes on the gloves are huge so a lot of shots get blocked when they shouldn't. Knock outs seem to be based on a stamina/HP thing as well, as the strongest hook/uppercut won't knock out the opponent but towards the end of the match, you'll be getting knockdowns from a jab. Great fun addition to shadow boxing though, as long as you make sure you keep technique up and don't just adapt to what's best in game
@Miguel-yh7le
@Miguel-yh7le 3 года назад
The arms are registered, they are just invisible. You can even shoulder roll. You can also reduce the glove size in the settings, and unless you hit super hard, they will only be rocked where they are super close to being ko’d where you have to finish them off with a few more punches
@senorbonbon

@@Miguel-yh7le what would be the best settings in having the best " realistic settings" glove size, opponent power and etc.
@Miguel-yh7le
@Miguel-yh7le 2 года назад
@@senorbonbon I would say wrist wrap mode plus a few rounds with auto adjust on. Glove size is personal preference, a bigger one would make blocking easier, but its harder to break through the guard, and vice versa. It also depends on what you mean by realistic. While the game is really fun and caters to realism, this is in no way what actual boxing is like, if thats what you are going for.

It has helped me improve and police my form and improve footwork and endurance the power factor still isn't there but I'm winning most my fights by unanimous decision accept for chernang by time I got to him I was too tired to fight I got a draw you don't really have to circle around them just jabe and fake get them to cover up and stand still and slightly move either direction to find opening preferably you'll find a weakness in their guard you can exploit but don't throw away your position chasing the knock down just go medium keeping good pace and balance and it'll be fairly easy to shut down most their offense

I play TOTF all the time, I had 4 mos of boxing instruction prior to picking up this game. I've been fighting through Outclassed mode, next up is Spider and I have the most trouble with him.
