Does Your Rattlesnake Proof Fence Actually Work?

From our experience capturing thousands of rattlesnakes from homes, we've noticed that some snake proofing jobs don't actually do what they promise. Here's what's going on, and a simple test that takes a few seconds to see if your snake proof yard is actually doing its job.

LOL, You never know where the heck you'll end up when you click on the first RU-vid video of the day; I think that's why it's so much fun. Their "recommendations" always have some videos that my mind would never have thought to be curious about. One day I found myself watching a video that was literally about watching paint drying on a wall! Hey, Enjoy!

I encourage Roadrunners to hang around by putting water out and feeding them bite sized balls of frozen hamburger meat. The Roadrunners come around in the morning and evening. Watching them go after a Rattler is very interesting to watch. Rattlers are no match for a Roadrunner. The parts of my property where dogs or people go is fenced as shown here with 1/4" mesh. The open areas that aren't cleared is where I feed the Roadrunners. They look for me and come calling as soon as I show up.

Another RU-vidr, Doggy Daycare Farm Trips, from Sydney Australia, has a 32-acre dog day care and training facility. He has installed 3 kilometers of snake fencing around the property. He occasionally will find a harmless tree snake which comes over the fence via the treetops. He even has a video about the capture of one. He's a certified snake handler in addition to being a certified alpha dog trainer. He uses gentle methods, and rehabs problem dogs. He's now rehabbing 4 dogs that were under death sentences and socializing pups from backyard breeders. No dogs have been bitten by taipans, browns or tigers since he's operated the farm, nor have they been seen by the staff. So, snake proofing done right can provide a safe haven for your pets and family.

If anyone is interested in doing this, i highly recommend getting the Galvanized Steel mesh over the Aluminum mesh. Snake proofing includes trench work, aka burying some of the mesh underground. This will not only stop snakes, but deter armadillos.

As always, great job. I get asked daily about “snake proofing”. I would also add; no less than 2’ high 3’ is better, buried at base at least 3-5” and be sure it’s installed on the outside not the inside of the existing fence. And one last thing. I like having the top edge folded outward creating a “catch point” for any snake trying to go over the top. Be safe and thanks.
@gordonalmadi5871
@gordonalmadi5871 2 года назад
all valid, however the many rats, mice and moles create many paths below any "fencing" installed, even fencing installed on concrete footings a full 24" below grade. no simple solutions there and remain easy entry points. I am talking from experience, not theory

I am going to get some 1/4 inch mesh and eventually improve the bottom of the 1 inch square mesh fencing i have.. It's about 400 ft total, so it will take me a while.. not the first 'snake' we have found in the last 4 years so.. dont want the dogs to get bit..

If it's that obvious, we wouldn't see it on 4/5 of the fence jobs that we correct, and HOAs wouldn't require 1/2" standards, which of course let baby snakes in. We agree, but many people apparently don't.

for that reason, I have installed a literal 'fire wall' around my property. it's a pipe going around all around my property, with little holes in it, which are connected to our gas main. if you light it up, it not only keeps EVERYTHING from entering your property (flames go up to 2 meters high), it also keeps your garden warm and bright, no need for an extra BBQ grille, also the kids love jumping through it. only the gas bill is a little high, but nothing is too expensive when it's about the well-being of you and your loved ones.

@mg42lover

I caught a diamondback, many years ago, that ended up being pregnant. I was curious about why she wouldn’t eat. She’d bite the mice but wouldn’t eat them. Day 11 she had the babies. 3 of them. One was dead at birth. I took mom back out to the desert and let her go. I raised the babies for 2 years before letting them go as well. I accidentally found out what makes them more dangerous when I went to Michigan for my dad’s surgery. I was supposed to be gone only two weeks but ended up staying 7 weeks. As soon as I got home I fed the snakes. Normally when the mice were bitten they would run around the 6’ aquarium 2-3 minutes before falling down and not doing much more. After not eating for 7 weeks the mice fell within seconds, which I thought was odd. So I experimented with it. The longer they went without using the venom the more potent it became. This is actual science as it was repeated multiple times with identical results. 2 snakes with identical results each time. The idea that snakes can “control” their bites is also nothing more than a myth. At best there’s probably more evidence to suggest a defensive strike (spur of the moment/dry bite) vs a…time to eat bite.

I used to have a cage with finches that I would put out on a shaded deck when it was warm enough, and the literature that I read before building it said that to keep out both snakes and mice, the hardware cloth needed to be 1/4" or smaller meshes. In my particular case, the finches could get out of the cage if I used 1/2" mesh, so I didn't even consider 1/2" mesh.

He is correct... But. The 1/4" mesh does not require but a height of 20." Next, no matter how tight the mesh if it can be tunneled under by snakes or other animals then snakes can use the tunnels also. This requires an *exterior lip* under ground so the un-wanted animals cannot make tunnels at the edge of the fence.
@RattlesnakeSolutions

Terry Weaver Using the proper size mesh is one of many aspects to proper rattlesnake fencing. However, 20” is not sufficient to keep larger rattlesnakes out.

They don't dig their own holes, and we also dig the mesh into the ground to prevent anything going under. The depth that we bury it depends on the rodents in the area and the quality of the soil. Many rodents and softer soil = deeper fencing, etc.

Can’t snakes just climb up the mesh? I’ve seen snakes climb my wood privacy fence

In all seriousness, firing a weapon in an area where people are residing STILL has laws in the U.S.A. It is an arrest-able offense. Clearly james ellis is in the dark about the facts. Moving on... How far up your fence (and below ground) is needed to keep rattlesnakes ans bull snakes out of a 1/3rd acre in the south eastern region of Colorado? I rescue and rehab dogs in this area.

4u25out that makes no sense.. a dead snake looks exactly like an alive snake so you’re basically just saying that snakes look cute in general

thats the reason people get bitten , they dont see it till they strike

Good example that u ALWAYS! check the fucking stuff first which what you are buying.. same goes with weed and stuff, you at least have to see a glimpse of it first.. In this case people clearly don't know there is baby snakes around too. And little too ignorant to check and find out information about the things your looking for or buying or whatever yourself first. Everyone just trust's automatically what they are saying when they advertise shit.

Were a person not bothered by the appearance, it seems to me that corrugated sheet metal would provide a more effective barrier to snake infiltration than the 1/4" mesh.

Can you tell me where to get the mesh and how to apply it to a chain link fence properly. Had one last year in my back yard in Carson city nv and I have three golden retriever boys who are my world and I’m trying to do what I can to keep them safe. Thank you!!

Was thinking that 1/2 “ x 1/2” on a diagonal would be larger. Also an animal bitten on the face is less lethal than say the legs or neck. Less big blood vessels.

I understand their important to the health of local ecosystems but I have no sympathy for rattlesnakes. Most folks shoot em if they end up on their property with their livestock and children.
