Having a growth mindset is key. Comparing yourself to others and wanting to look smart will only make you lack confidence. Don't be afraid to fail and learn from your mistakes. That's what _actual_ smart people do.

This is the point most people are missing from the video tbh. Take it as a competition and try your hardest and if you can’t compete with others so what, you are doing it for yourself to be successful.

it's scary how much I could relate to this video. When I'm in a regular class, I feel really smart because my grades are not bad but when I'm in an honors class, I suddenly don't feel motivated because I feel intimidated by other students who get better grades than me. It depends on the people I'm surrounded with where I tend to feel either somewhat intelligent or not very intelligent at the end of the day, let's all be wise :)
@avinashreji60

+Avinash Reji true, I try to do that by increasing my competitiveness :P although, your definition of success is probably different from my definition of success To achieve my goal of success, I don't think it's necessary to be super intelligent. +Zeppelans There are good and bad teachers at all schools, and it's not like you can interview all the teachers you will have before you go. Also, a bad teacher is not the end of the world. When I was in school, I had a TERRIBLE teacher for one class, but I couldn't drop the class. So I just didn't go, and instead I studied the subject on my own. I got a 70 in that class - not great but I passed.

Its not all about the grades you make, but rather the hands you shake. However, a good school with name recognition and whatnot does go a long way in terms of networking. That being said, I have seen many successful people emerge from a lesser known school. Just make sure you have your goals set and be motivated. Employers can often tell if you're BSing your way through something.

Bullshit, I can't be a lawyer, doctor or an architect without a degree. And where do you get degrees? School, that's where. A company, for instance, is more likely to hire a Harvard lawyer than one that went to Stanford. The name of the school gives you more opportunities and the school itself also does.
@alexruan5639
@alexruan5639 8 лет назад
"Majoring in something that will get you a job" You're just a paper in a box of papers and hoping they'll pick you is careless. Having a track record reasonably nothing that requires formal education like law, engineering, medical, etc. would guarantee you more than being a newbie experience wise.

I thought of myself as being pretty smart, and suddenly I'm next to a guy who is two years ahead of everyone else in math and a girl who's a year ahead in French (the hardest language at my school because our teacher is a native speaker) and is self-teaching Spanish. Think of college like a car. You have cheap cars and you have expensive cars. The cheap cars may not have navigation, heated seats, or an auto safety system, but they'll get you from point A to point B at a far cheaper rate as long as you have the drive and skills to push it along your path. An expensive car might have a plethora of luxuries that lower the risk of getting from point A to point B, as well as (perhaps) some advanced driving skills, but you'll have less money for gas on top of the money you have to pay back for your car. In either case you're likely to end up at point B; in one scenario, you are lacking some experience but not money, and in the other you have more experience but less money to do the things you wish to do at your destination.

The best of the best schools. Top tier. Basically if you go to an Ivy League and your mom has the bumper sticker to prove it... nobody cares... BUT if you want to be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, etc, these are the schools you'd dream of going to and you'll likely find work in your field if you've done well. Other more standard, lower class jobs are filled by people with regrets and large debts for not going to Community College... basically...

So true. As long as your motivated and have a degree, for the most part, you're set. With what you went into that's the most important part I feel, with business it's more on who you know and I don't think it really matters unless you're a doctor or surgeon. Even then I bet it's rarely matter. As I'm going into my 4th year, I've come to notice the biggest impact on the college you go to are the people you meet and how you transition into independence and mature into an adult.

The fact that colleges are all ranked by SAT scores is a bit outrageous. I scored slightly above average on them, got into Rochester Institute of Technology, and I've been on the Dean's list since I got here. The fact that these statistics are based on a test I took 2 years ago in a 90 degree F room in a 5 hour period, before even stepping on a college campus, doesn't make the statistics very impactful in my opinion. There needs to be a lot more to college rankings and statistics than "The SAT score of this graduate," or "The SAT scores of the students the school decided to accept." It's not all encompassing.
@MaggieMaltese
@MaggieMaltese 9 лет назад
I couldn't agree more. Almost every higher institution looks at prospective students by their test results, which were obtained when most of us were still unclear of our future. I have the worst GCE O level score in my college class and I can easily rank above people that scored way better than me + were considered 'elite' just by one test result.

i think the UK still ranks based on grades by the school (hence why cambridge and oxford are top) but they have also always been the top and nothing has come close, there are other ways the universities are graded based on student satisfaction and other things (which sometimes are higher than cambridge and Oxford but not often) however the main focus is still on grades and i guess facilities and employability, because if you go to Cambridge or Oxford then youre already in a better position

If you can't solve problems in school, then what reason do people have to think you can solve them in a job? Many jobs require specific specialization, if you were bad at that specialization in school, can you be expected to be good at that in a job? Even if you go with the whole smart but lazy thing, intelligence doesn't matter if you're too lazy to use it.

Intelligence is define as the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. This is what school does and tests do. You are taught knowledge and shown skills and then tested to see if you can apply them. School and tests scores are a very good way to test intelligence. Although there are exceptions, some people get test anxiety and preform poorly, the exceptions doesn't cause the general to be untrue. Generally speaking school and tests are a good way to measure intelligence. Btw we are speaking of a specific type of intelligence which is the one that is generally referred to.

I'd always tell people to go to a smaller or less prestigious school for undergrad, because it's cheaper, gives you larger margins for error, and for someone who's really smart lets them shine with many accolades. Also consider the purpose of college. Ask anyone why they're going to college and they'll say something like, 'to get a good job.' This means that 95% of students plan to work for someone, for a company, or for an employer. What if you want to work for yourself? Own or start your own business? or be an entrepreneur? This is something to consider when deciding what you want to do with your future. Don't simply go to college because everyone is doing it or because you were told to.

@MystikAzn4vr 8 лет назад
That's why I said 95%. I never said all so please read. There are about 5% of people who know what they want to do and those require specific training. It's good for doctors, engineers, etc. to go to college. Most others go because they're told to without knowing why. That's why around 75-80% of graduates never use their degree at all. They simply wasted 4-6 years and a ton of money for no reason. Also, no, to start a business you should get experience and learn on your own terms. College doesn't really teach you anything about business. Anything they do teach you can be bought at the bookstore for $40 (instead of $200) and save you 4-5 years of time.

We learn faster buying our own books and studying on our own time, and cheaper too. Most teacher don't know how to be successful or how to run a business, let alone tell you how to. They're simply reading from a book that you can do too. College is not the answer to everything and you need to understand that. Looking back, I wouldn't have gone to college to get my degrees because I don't touch them right now. The same goes with 80% of people. 70-80% of people who go to college never use their degree.

This is SO true. Honestly you should have included the Netherlands in your explanation because the education system is perfectly set up for the phenomena you are describing. See, starting High school (age ~12) there are 5 levels of education. The highest scoring 20% get the toughest education brain-wise, the lowest scoring 20% receive education more oriented towards manual labour. After High school this diversion is continued and the highest scoring 20% go to Universities (which, in the Netherlands, is a term heavily protected by the law - an education institution needs to abide strict rules before they can call themselves a University) to become doctors or researchers, the lowest scoring 60% goes to "MBO" (which has various levels on its own but I'm not familiar with those), there, they too receive a job specific education (e.g., bodyguards, machine operators, assistants). Either way, what you see within these levels is that the lowest scoring of the 20% highest scoring can still feel incredibly dumb, simply because they are fully segregated from the other, even less brain-capable (couldn't find a better word) 80%.
@undercoverduck
@undercoverduck 9 лет назад
FYI, the system is *not* set up as a way to make people feel dumb. Rather it is meant so that everyone, regardless of where their capabilities lie, can receive a proper education and be prepared for the job market. Moreover, once on a route (say, the middle 20%), you can always climb up higher or a bit lower if you please and if you think your capabilities lie elsewhere.
@undercoverduck
@undercoverduck 9 лет назад
+messianicrogue I can see why such a system could be useful but I don't think it's a good idea to implement such grave diversions at such an early stage in education, especially since the kids can't live on their own in a place where they teach their preferred faculty but also often don't even know what their preference is to begin with
@pastelcataclysm
@pastelcataclysm 9 лет назад
That's really interesting! Thanks for the info, I'm from the US and our school system is nothing like that. If anything, new laws are making it so that everyone, despite their capabilities, is receiving the exact same education and testing, which just doesn't make any sense to me.
@s_nebulosa
@s_nebulosa 9 лет назад
+undercoverduck you don't go to a faculty. You go to high school and live with your parents (and go to shool on your bike). My city is not that big but had 11 schools with the middle and high level education and also loads with the lower (but I never oriented on those). I think it was great because in elementary school when I was 10 and my classmates 12 the things taught were too easy for me but too hard for them (we don't have middle school and I skipped a grade). The division in high school makes it so that the pace at school fits your brain's capacity. If you're not a learner but someone who wants to work with his/her hands you go to a lower level, with people of that same level and learn basic stuff and a job. If you're smart and an easy learner you go to an higher level to learn and be educated to full fill a job as, say, scientist or lawyer. Choosing a faculty comes later.

I recall my sister wanting to be a veterinarian, and she got accepted into some shitty school like Harvard or something and she had to make a choice of that, or a school that actually had a veterinarian major (or whatever). Which she ended up deciding to go to the "lesser" school of Texas A&M. Still spent a lot of money and didn't finish.... Which I don't blame her for. She was always the "straight A" sibling and expected to go and do "great things" and college I think is something way too many high school kids are rushed into. Unless you *REALLY* know what you want before you start. Which may be bad advance, considering many take a "few years off" working and never go back. They could also start with the basic classes, but that in itself has demotivated many college students from continuing, from what I hear.

I graduated high school with two free associates degrees from community colleges. The experience of taking the initiative to get those degrees and maintain an internship has allowed me to mature professionally, while also saving me a ton of money financially. I am now set to complete a bachelors degree that will cost me about $1500 or so for two years. I am using these degrees as a safety cushion if I fail at becoming an engineer. (my degrees are drafting and design). So basically I have a fallback CAREER rather than a backup plan. If I attended a university or elite school, I would be drowned in debt as a poor kid and my finances would be forever cursed. I completely agree. My choice was the most financially practical, which means community college. Harvard is for rich kids whose parents like to brag at cocktail parties about sweet nothings. STEM only cares if you pass and can use your skills. Student debt is killer.

You are completely right. I am so fed up with people thinking they are smart because they get good grades. Our education system is completely flawed. Sure, they are smart at book work but what does that matter at all? Are high schools don't teach you anything you actually need to know in life. All they teach you is this stuff that doesn't matter just for brain activity. And the majority of the kids hate it, and actually decreasing there motivation. Kids with a lot of motivation and effort and kids who don't stop after they fail are the smart kids. Kids who have the work ethic are the smart ones. Kids saying you have to go to college or you wont get a job and you have to have good grades or you wont get a job are stupid. At the end of the day, I believe it all comes down to money. For example, take a rich kid. Say this rich kid went to the best school, but was really dumb. Over time they became smarter, due to the fact that they were in the top school, but only because of the school he went to. Now take a poor kid. Extremely smart, deserved to be in the rich kids school BUT couldn't because they couldn't pay for it. Therefore meaning they can't get into a good college, all because they couldn't pay for it(unless they get a scholarship, but they need a lot of lick for that). Now the rich kid is having a awesome life, with a decent job, only because they were rich. Yes they were smart, but only because they went to a school who could teach them. Now the poor kid is stuck at a minimum wage job, but deserves to have a better job due to the fact that he has the same amount of intellect as the rich kid. Basically what im trying to say is that, the more money, the better school. The less money, worst school.
@PwnUIDo
@PwnUIDo 9 лет назад
Couple thoughts on this: there are many schools that offer need based scholarships, some really good schools do not even consider this when kids are applying (so a kid with less money gets as much of a chance as a rich kid). Of course the poorer kid needs to work harder to get in, but that is life. The rich kids parents worked hard so their son could have an easier life. A dumb rich kid won't get accepted into a really good school. Also companies value internships and experience more than the name on the degree.

Rich kid schools? Do you understand what public school is? I mean, yeah, certain districts hold richer or poorer people because of the neighborhoods, but most don't hold just rich or just pure. @Dizboz

The point of honours english or whatever you guys call it; i'm assuming it is to challenge a person to work harder. Pushing a teenagers limit is only good for them. Being lazy and not taking it and using excuses like i don't take it because it gets in the way of my job is stupid. Work, take a difficult class, and do extracurricular at the same time will only boost your knowledge and discipline.
@buca117
@buca117 8 лет назад
Branching out into extracurricular activities is leaps and bounds more beneficial to a teenager than a "more challenging" English class. Getting into an instrument has been proven to be a significant boost for anyone. Learning woodwork, taking care of animals, joining a sports team, getting good at auto repair, all of these things look way, way better to a university and a potential employer than whether or not your English class was Honors or not, and they stimulate the mind and push its limits much further to boot. Basically, Bloodbath is right, Honors classes are pointless.

I would argue otherwise. Firstly, many honors courses are weighted, so they could actually help your GPA. For example, I know the high school I went to still weights their honors classes on a 4.5 scale. That does look better for college applications and academic scholarships. Furthermore, it might doom the student to not try academically, which can be ruinous in college or related academic trials. So, I'd say take an honors class if you're great at the subject and you're fairly confident you can get an A. Don't take it if you're not so good as that can hurt your GPA and your self-confidence.

I regret going to an expensive university... I can't get a job for shit and I've been paying back loan debt for 7 years now. Had I just started working after high school I might not be ballin' but at least I wouldn't be in horrible debt. After high school, just go to vocational school and be a welder or plumber or something. I always thought a college degree would secure me some kind of office work but it doesn't at all. All anyone cares about is your specific experience. Where else have you worked and what did you do there. Nothing else matters. If you must go to college, study STEM. Liberal arts is a waste of time and money. No cares and I mean no one cares that I graduated with a 3.6 GPA, know a foreign language and majored in Philosophy at a top University. All that happens after you graduate is you work for 12/hr through a temp agency while living at your parents house because you can't afford to pay the loans and the rent and hopefully you make enough to go to community college at night to learn something like java. That's the BEST case scenario if you don't have rich parents.

Present the facts but don't give an answer? Well that was useless, for those in STEM who want answers, here are the facts as they stand. Fact 1: The school name can help you get a job via connections and simply brand name. Fact 2: A degree is a degree, a PhD is a PhD, you will get a job regardless of whether you come from Harvard or a state university Fact 3: 10 years down the line, no one cares where you graduated from. Work History>School Brand name For those in STEM, choose schools based off interest and not brand name. Your mental health and financial situation is way more important than anything any big name school can offer.
@anikamis445
@anikamis445 3 года назад
But if the school name helps you get job connections, and you need those job connections for work experience because you need work experience for a good job 10 years down the line, then doesn't the school name matter? I can imagine that when you're applying to STEM internships in college, the only thing you have on your resume is the school you go to, so that holds a lot of weight. Idk tho that's just what I hear as a high school senior.

Maybe the author wanted an approximate metric measuring competence caused by education alone. Job placement and salary are more valuable but may be based on other things like people skills, or negotiation. A published work especially one on pure science supposedly stands on its own as a credit to what classes claim to teach.
@rmail25

The problem with this is that you have a higher chance of getting a higher paying job if you do a bunch of internships as well. If you go to a lower tier school, you can be doing up to two or three internships and keep up with the work for school, comparable to someone who is in a higher tier school and can barely pass their classes with no internships. What you do outside of school matter just as much as what you do in school and most would hire the guy who did three internships with a degree.

I went to a community college, then a state university for my bachelors in mechanical engineering. At my company, many of my coworkers come from some pretty great schools like WPI, RPI, and i've heard that we have some older guys from MIT. To me this is enough proof that going to a fancy school won't necessarily make you any better off. At my university a lot of companies sponsored projects with the school, and donate a lot of money to the school. Some of these companies have higher ups who graduated from the school and want to give back, and may even prioritize you if you're from that school. Because of this its pretty common to see companies with an unusually high percentage of people from a couple of local schools. As long as your school has a decent program you should be fine, and will save yourself tens of thousands of dollars if you go to a university instead of a fancy school. It probably depends a lot on what major you're going for, what kind of job you want, etc., but i'm confident anyone with a lot of determination could pull off a great career coming out of an average school.

The girl who just graduated as valedictorian from my high school in June applied to a handful of Ivy League schools, got accepted, and decided to go to a local university just half an hour away from home. It’s no Harvard, but it’s definitely not a “bad” school. People may ask, “Why is the valedictorian going to college near our crappy hometown when she could go to ‘better’ schools?” Simply, because she wants to. Work hard and get good grades for the pride and satisfaction of it, not for a certain college that can never promise success.

Your economics teacher then lied to you. This is first year first semester math course for aspiring math majors in Harvard: www.math.harvard.edu/~elkies/M55a.10/ This is just 1 random homework from the semester due weekly: www.math.harvard.edu/~elkies/M55a.10/p10.pdf " In the class of 1970, only 20 of the 75 students who began the class finished it due to its difficulty.[4] Similar drop-out rates were true for the class of 1976: "Seventy started it, 20 finished it, and only 10 understood it." " ~Math 55 This is first year first QUARTER math course for ALL students regardless of major in CalTech.: www.math.caltech.edu/~2015-16/1term/ma001a/ This is just 1 random homework from the quarter due weekly: www.math.caltech.edu/~nets/ps612015.pdf Answers (EXTREMELY concise meaning most student's work will be more than this): www.math.caltech.edu/~nets/Set_6_solns.pdf Remember, this is a QUARTER math course for ALL students regardless of major. Meaning FAR LESS time than 1 semester to cover the materials. It would be more fair to compare this course + half of the 2nd quarter course to 1 semester course. This is your local community college first year first semester math course (Calculus I): mesacc.edu/~johrx98491/MAT220/MAT220.html ONLY 5 chapters all semester. Content that almost every student attending prestigious universities like CalTech finished in ~10th grade in a far more difficult system. mesacc.edu/~johrx98491/MAT220/MAT220-Chapter4-Review.pdf This is the amount community college learned after almost one month of the course. NOT one week. The contents as you can see is day and night. Courses like Math 55 in Harvard (and many talented math majors even skip this for first year first semester course) require almost 50 hours (if not more sometimes implying you pretty much have barely any sleep all week) outside class of studying a week WITH 4 to 5 other courses (and most of these students join at least 2 extra curricular). Considering many of the drop outs include students like Olympiad world ranked #2 in math, etc. in their respective years, upper level (honors) at Harvard is no joke. Courses like Calculus I in CalTech is a standard pre-req for ALL students and is a quarterly schedule. The content of Calculus I in CalTech would make more than 99% of all college graduates drop out of college. That's how difficult the contents are. The Calculus I in your local community college is the content AP Calc AB teaches in a lower standard. This course will require probably around 30 min~1 hours a week. So here are the evidences. Believe what you want from this but I have legitimate proofs that your economics teacher lied to you. Oh and I forgot to tell you the biggest difference between the schools. Your grade is graded RELATIVE to your peers. Your grades are bell distributed in the math and science courses. Meaning if someone sitting next to you is world ranked, you better pray that you out perform him/her in the exams. It doesn't matter if you mastered the material. If everyone else in the class are 'the brightest of the brightest in the world' and all perform better than you on exams, you then become in the bottom of the class regardless of spending so many hours in the course. Of course certain top schools are infamous for grade inflation like Harvard but do remember, a 3.28 average in math class does not mean much if the class itself requires a full time hour basis (and yet

A lot of people who go to very high end schools don't pay for their school; their parents do and their parents have a high reputation to get them a job. My dad got a degree in international relations from Colgate, couldn't find a job, then went back to his local community college and got a degree in computer science. They both went on to have successful careers and actually met at one of the companies they worked at. You don't "need" a degree from a really good school to be successful, just like how you don't need to go to art school to be a great artist, but imagine how much you would learn about art if you did go to art school. Logan That quote is very interesting. I've never seen it in that light before. However, I can't fully agree with his quote about people who are lazy but clever. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, where people who are brilliant try to think of new ways to accomplish tasks without hassle and quickly. But I don't really see these kinds of people. Instead of answering with a quote, can you name a few prominent people who have both qualities of laziness and intelligence and how they succeeded?

This aren't facts though, so not very reliable. I used to go to a poorly managed college and I was influenced to be like the other students. I would fail everything, and not care at all. Now, I go to one of the top colleges where I live, and being in such a studious and good environment has made me [actually] dedicated to my education. I guess it's very subjective.

This made me feel so much better! As a person who got into their dream school, but couldn’t financially afford it, I had to settle for one of my local schools. Which isn’t bad - it’s actually nationally ranked. But it still wasn’t my first choice. I felt as if my peers around me pity me because I’m “settling”. Anyway, I’ve come to the conclusion that it isn’t necessarily WHERE you go BUT what you take from your learning and experience 😊

This video is super helpful. I'm a college freshman in a top university. During my first few days in college, I felt really bad because I started to think that this university is very demanding and challenging. Everyone here is so smart and tbey can cope up with everything while I struggle. I started to feel regret on choosing this university in the first place. Why am I here? , I asked myself. But then, after watching this video, I realised that feeling like a tiny fish in a huge pond is normal. All I have to do is to have confidence in my abilities and I can gain success. That's why I got admitted to this university in the first place. :D

There are so many problems with the statistics you presented in this video, likely from your blatant misunderstanding of most of the statistics. 1) The SAT math score chart's percentages are not saying graduation RATES for that certain score group, they are saying how many graduates HAVE that certain score. Harvard's graduation rate is in the high 90s. All that chart is saying about Harvard is that most of its graduates have high SAT math scores, not that they will fail to get a degree... 2) The comparison effect is a fair point, and it certainly may affect your self-perception, but that has nothing to do with the purpose of going to a college, which is to learn, develop, and utilize your learning and development to do something in your life, whether it be a career, devotion to research, community service, etc. One's self-confidence is also a highly variable thing, and some people might not be affected at all by this effect. 3) When you discuss STEM and dropping out of STEM, I'm assuming that you're also completely misinterpreting the statistics. Perhaps STEM graduation rate decreases as SAT score increases, but that's almost certainly because a better school will have a notably harder STEM curriculum, as the course rigor, faculty, and requirements are all at a considerably higher level. This might force prospective STEM majors to switch majors to something that they can handle, or that suits their interests more, as many 17-year-olds who think they want to major in mathematics can be quickly disillusioned once they step out of AP Calculus and into high-level theoretical mathematics. Furthermore, there is no way that overall GRADUATION RATE decreases as SAT scores raise, look at any top 50 college vs. any bottom 50 college and try to tell me that the top has a lower graduation rate.... Even if this were the case, it could also easily be explainable by the fact that worse schools have considerably lower course rigor than harder schools, so that its lower-performing students can graduate at all... 4) What you're trying to bring up about economists and research papers is not only horrendously wrong, but it's extremely disrespectful to the graduates from those top 5 schools, who you literally called "failures in their fields". First of all, that study does not say the 30 worst schools, it says NON-TOP-30 schools.... (www.insidehighered.com/news/2014/11/19/study-says-research-output-overwhelming-majority-economics-phds-low) the 30 worst schools would not be producing any economics research papers in highly reputable publication journals at all. That study shows that the top 5 schools are, in fact, considerably better than the non-top-30s. Plus, of all of the things you could have used to attempt to quantify your point, Economic research from PhDs is quite possible the absolute worst, as it is a GRADUATE school field, which is clearly not what you are talking about in the rest of the video. This was so unbelievably bad, and it was the first RU-vid video I've disliked in around 2 years. It's embarrassing that you've dissuaded 72,000 people into thinking that you actually made a worthwhile analysis on this topic.

I've grown up an honors student and will probably continue taking them because I like the challenge, and for the most part I like the classes. I want to go to a pretty good school as well but I'd like to pass on what I know to people: that unless you seriously like a class that's either honors or AP, don't take it. It's a headache and competition is just going to make you feel worse. That's the situation in both high school and college- once you realize there will always be someone doing better than you, you lose sight of why you're taking the class in the first place. It's a shit feeling and is seriously damaging to your confidence.

If you are going to work for a company or some kind of store or whatever, school doesn't matter. If you come waving with your dimploma they are just gonna laugh. They want people with experience. ( There are jobs ofc that needs some kind of dimploma thing for example doctors etc, but you get the idea ) I know a guy that finished school with good grades, and he wanted a job at Razer, but he didn't get it, because they wanted people with experience, not your diploma. ( a lot of big companies are like that ) You are told what to do from the day you were born. Go to school. Do your homework. In the end, this might say jack shit. ( MIGHT! There are exceptions!! ) A really really good tip if you are young ( teen ) Try to find a job, even tho it doesn't pay very well, a simple job that gives you life experience might help you get a job in the future. Just sayin! ;)
