This is a quick look around Dog Canyon Campground on the far North Side of Guadalupe Mountains National Park. It is a really long drive to access this campground which leads it to almost always (except on holiday weekends) have a lot of solitude.
The campground includes camping for both tents, rvs, and horse trailers. All sites lack electricity and water at the actual site, but there are places to fill water, as well as a bathroom with flushing toilets and sinks.
New for 2022, make sure you have your campsite reserved ahead of time! As of the posting of this video, campsites are $20/night and are reservable only through Recreation.gov

When it comes to tents at GMNP which do you recommend trekking pole tent (Durston X Mid) or free standing (Nemo Dagger)? Curious about the rocky ground and tent stakes….

I've used trekking pole tents and free standing at GUMO. Whichever is better to you in the wind. I've never had much problem with tent stakes out there. The ground isn't near as hard as some other places I camp.

Cameron, We're going to reserve two sites in Dog Canyon mid to late June. I expect it will be pretty warm so we want as much shade as possible. From your video it looks like sites 5, 6 and 9 are the most shaded. Is this correct? Also I have an REI Basecamp 6 tent. Will this tent fit on the tent pads at these sites? Thanks.

I have the same tent. It should fit on the tentpads. Your vestibule might have off. But the main tent will fit. My family has setup a kingdom 6 at the campground before with no problem. Site 5 has the most direct shade. Especially over the table area. If you plan to hangout in the tent, it will get afternoon sun though. It's still my favorite site as it's a good mix of being back away from the road and has good shade. 9 would be my other suggestion. It may have the best overall shade for the tent pad. But it's right next to the road. If you get on Google maps, you can see the satellite view and maybe get a better idea of how the trees are distributed. There are also a few 360 pictures that someone has posted. That always helps me.

Good information. I’ve yet to visit but it’s on my bucket list.

The more iconic hikes are on the South side of the park. But the quieter experience is at Dog Canyon. Thanks for watching.

What do you know about the backcountry sites? Totally primitive and hike-in water I assume? Those tent sites are way too crowded for me :)
@CameronHall88
@CameronHall88 3 месяца назад
I know a pretty fair amount about them. I have videos about individual backcountry campgrounds on my channel. Or if you have any specific questions, let me know.

@@CameronHall88 Thank you. I'll be hitting Guadalupe MNP in mid june and those tent sites don't look too appealing. So can people just drive down BLM roads and pitch? Or, are there specific backcountry areas not too far of a hike (gotta hike in all the water) you'd recommend? It seems, with all the water one would need this time of year, hiking in 2 or 3 gallons would be too much pack weight. Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it.

@@CameronHall88 Also, I will be flying to El Paso, and of course, I'll have to resupply water and alcohol fuel at Wal Mart...no problem...My packweight is no more than 20 lbs for a couple days. (with 40 oz water)
@CameronHall88
@CameronHall88 3 месяца назад
@andrewwheelerguitar if you have any El Paso specific questions or travel from there, you may check out the channel ChucoHiker. He's from there and knows the area well. You can camp almost anywhere in the Lincoln National Forest for free and without permit. There are some cattle tanks you could potentially filter from but there is no guarantee that they will actually have water. Also, if you are passing through Queen, NM, you can fill water there. You definitely have to carry all your water when backpacking. It makes it easier to plan a route the passes by one of the front country Campgrounds where you can refill water. Not sure how far you're planning to backpack, but I would stay away from Marcus campsites as it's pretty open and it'll be very hot. You will have cooler temps and more shade at Mckittrick Ridge, Mescalero, or Tejas.

Wow, it was so green out there during your visit! That final shot has gorgeous color in the sky.

Not the greenest I've ever seen but by far the most wildflowers. Crazy amount of bees all over them. And mosquitoes were actually a problem for the first time ever out there. That's how much rain they've been getting.

Hi Cameron, I'm glad you made it back out there, and I'm sure you had a good time. It's definitely a beautiful spot, and it's nice that it's so isolated. It's both good and bad that you have to reserve the sites online. If they're going online with reservations, then you should also be able to get your backpacking permit online and not have to deal with the rangers, or waste each other's time. Are they going to do that soon? I never felt like groveling before the rangers at Big Bend to get a backpacking permit, so I never did it there. My only backpacking happened to be to Dog Canyon, but it doesn't count since we stayed at an established campsite. I think we stayed at site 5 or 6. I hope you have some more videos from there soon.
@CameronHall88

They still require picking up permits at Pine Springs and as far as I know, the Superintendent has mentioned that's how it's going to be. Hopefully they change it at some point. That would be super convenient.

Thanks for this review, very helpful! Unfortunate that you can't get a backcountry permit at Dog Canyon... I'm thinking about a multiday hike starting from there, guess I gotta plan to go to Pine Springs first 👎

Yeah, it's an unfortunate rule. Wasn't like that a few years ago. But it's a great Campground. And I really enjoy that whole side of the park. Hope you have a great trip.

@Ultralight Outdoors is it possible to hammock on the trails/wilderness camps in GMNP? I prefer hammock camping, but will go to ground if I have to occasionally. Hammock or not, I’d like to head out there this year. And your firsthand knowledge of the park seems thorough.
@CameronHall88
@CameronHall88 Год назад
Not in the actual park. You could up until a couple years ago. Unfortunately more and more government rules have made it against the rules to hammock camp in the park. You can tent camp. Or cowboy camp most of the time. If you really want to hammock, you can camp in the Lincoln National Forest that connects to Guadalupe Mountains NP. There are very little rules there and it's free.

Question, do the tent pads work ok with stake down type tents? They are getting some high winds this week.
@CameronHall88
@CameronHall88 Год назад
Yes, you can get your stakes in the ground for the most part. You might have to move around a little to find a place it'll push in. I wouldn't camp anywhere out there without staking my tent down. The wind can pop up at anytime.

frustrating when you have to pay by card online/ credit card companies get a piece of everything that is not right. // if i showed up by accident without a res i would stay and find an office in the morning or call someone later on... /rangers usually work with you in that situation ... really nice campground and so nice how empty it is thanks for showing us around
@CameronHall88
@CameronHall88 Год назад
I would stay as well. It is frustrating with everything going to online. But that is the way most of the NPS is going. And I don't think it'll ever go back.
@potatothorn

@@CameronHall88 i wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't for the fact that the credit card companies end up taking a percentage of that : money that should go to the Park. BUT i also have to admit that after seeing the metal $ collection thing at a campground out here / sawed off and stolen... yeah everything will shift to card eventually...
