I'd say teach them to stay..I'm not a pro, but one thing I did with my dog while I was in 4-H was to stack him up, tell him stay, move away, then reward him by staying in stack even if I had hand stacked him. Then I'd start doing the "hard stack" like it is shown in this video, telling him stay, pulling back, and rewarding him. I do hear people with newer show dogs in the ring telling them to stay as they free stack them as well, so I'm sure there's plenty of people who use that.

Lindsay, it takes hours to get to where this man is, no way could he do a video on that work. Patience, time, repetition. He is giving you the basics. It helps if you can keep the puppy's attention for a short while and work it slowly into more time. NEVER be negative, the dog will look fearful in the ring. Get someone to go over the dog while it stands still, this will help when the judge puts his hands on the dog. Do not forget that male dogs have to have the testicles handled, to see if they are "real" and of about the same size. It is a show for choosing breeding stock! Hope you have fun.
Most handlers specialize in only a few breeds. The coated breeds are very different than short haired breeds as well. This man is being very generous with his skills.
I'm new to dog showing and want to show my Rottweiler when I get her. But I don't know what I need to get, like the show collar, lead, the treats that you use, etc. lots of thank you'd in advance! :)
ArabianHorseChic235 I have a very small dog but my Friends have told me that you need to get candy’s that are easy to swallow for the dog so that they cannot get the treats stuck in their teeth
I'm going to try this with throwing treats at her... she does't have problems standing the way i want her to but her head is always at the hight of her shouders (down). A 9mo weim.

can you use free stack all the time or is it imposible to use it always. I am not very willing in pulling on my dogs legs. i want him to stand the right way on his self. Its like free stack. But are they standing the correct way, whit all paws in one line?
I show, breed and raise Collies, their a free stacking breed, we hardly ever put our hands on them in the ring, I think it will depend on your breed and how their feet need to be placed, if your dog knows how to place his/her own feet in the correct spot I don't see why not!... but even my trained free stacking collies need me to correct their foot placement from time to time, I try to teach them to re-stack by backing up a bit then stepping forward, or you can take them into a circle and then have them step forward to get into that free stack.
