Yeah ours weigh around 40 lbs but individually can pull you around like it’s nothing.

I have a Siberian Husky in Florida and mine loves to run. I have an industrial recumbent 3 wheeled bicycle and sometimes he goes so fast I can barely hang on. Sam Malone is very powerful.

@@doggodoggo3000 I agree, I don’t like competitive racing. But I think tourist kennels and people that have a smaller team and do it for fun are fine as long as the dogs are well cared for. But that can go for anyone, sled dog or not. Big races that thrive on the abuse and murder of these dogs should be banned, but not dog sledding as a whole

I live in Provo, Utah. I had no idea we had Street Mushing! Can you tell me more?

Street Mushing is simple as long as you have a strong high energy dog. This kind of mushing is a lot of fun but can be dangerous, my first run on skateboard i crashed and burned and didn't let go of my dog, and ended up being dragged forty three feet followed by a fractured wrist. The cause was a malfunction with my bearings inside my wheel. Im not saying you will always get hurt when doing this but on your first runs till you get used to it wear some safety gear. This is simple choose a large dog with high energy to burn. make sure he or she knows their rights and lefts and stops and slow downs, then your one step closer. Then its Choosing your transportation this includes bikes, skateboards, longboards, scooters, and rollarblades. bike are the safest because of the nice brake they have. Then all its left to do is get your dog harnessed up. The harness i use is a petco brand its meshed wide chested to reduce irritation when the dog is pulling, it cost $35-45. last thing use a longer leash just in case your dog does any sudden stops i couldn't find a long leash i had to make my own out of rope, and a strong clip. I'd show you a video on street mushing but my Girlfriend wont video tape me. She is scared i might crash again. and i kinda have no friends. They are an intentional mutt. Mushers breed in a variety of breeds you wouldn't expect. They are breeding for performance, endurance intelligence etc. All of these dogs live outside full time and are very used to temperatures of Alaska. When they are running, they are usually too hot. It's when they are at rest that they need fur coats. In a proper mushers dog yard they have a doghouse with straw in it. Frequently the dogs ignore the doghouse unless it's -30f or colder. They mostly use it as a pedestal to bark at each other from. Husky's look great in pictures, but lack the endurance that mushers need. I hope that answers your question.

@@Hubert99999 These are working dogs born and raised in Alaska. How you handle them is crucial. I'm pretty sure the people on this video, native Alaskans, are far more experienced in handling working dogs than you are at handling your pets at home.

@@barchetta575m you can train them without being an asshole, seen plenty of people do it online and in person. its like parents and teachers that used to hit kids, back in the day, we moved on from that, just like (most) people moved on from shock collars and other cruel means of training a dog. it is unnecessary.

Well if your talking huskies then they range from 40-60 or so pounds, but if your talking Alaskan husky so then they weigh about the same it just depends on its bloodlines, hope I could help.

The musher gives the lead dog verbal commands. Gee , turn right Haw turn left. The musher also gives the lead dog some autonomy whe it comes to determining the best path because the dogs have very good senses about the ground and ice conditions. Also, it heavy sniw, the lead dog is better able to find the trail than the musher who is 30 feet or more behind the lead dog.

The dogs love mushing. When you walk into the dog yard, they go crazy jumping and down hoping they're be the ones going out on a trip. If you ever spend time around mushers and their dogs, you'll quickly learn that the dogs see this as their purpose and favorite thing to do in life.

How many from what I would term working lines vs racing lines? Not sure on the terminology so hopefully you can figure out what I'm trying to ask.

Blood lines? Breeds? Both racing and working. There are different types of dog mushing also. Some use bigger stronger dogs for pulling heavy weight, some are sprint racers, some are distance mushers, and there is also skijoring. Each would want to blend various breeds to fit their needs.

Or maybe you’ve been lucky enough to see them in the flesh…er…the fur. What you may not know is that each sled-dog pair plays a different role in navigating the sometimes difficult trails and challenging terrain faced by racing teams. The dogs are positioned in pairs on either side of a gangline, or towline, that attaches to their harnesses and to the sled. Iditarod rules state that a musher may start a race with a maximum of 16 dogs and a minimum of 12 dogs on the gangline. At least six dogs must be on the line at the finish of the race. Most Iditarod mushers will start the race with the maximum. More dogs = more pulling power. Sled Dog Positions Here are brief descriptions of each position pair: Lead dogs: Perhaps the most critical part of the team, lead dogs set the pace and keep the other dogs on the trail. They are the dogs that respond to the musher’s commands of “gee” (right turn) and “haw” (left turn). Lead dogs must be alert and intelligent so they can find and follow the trail when it is covered over with snow. They do so through smell, sensing where other teams have passed, and feel, by feeling with their feet the packed trail beneath the loose snow covering. They also keep the other dogs in the team moving by pulling the gangline taut. In the past, some Iditarod mushers used only one lead dog. Today, it is more common to see two. Swing (or point) dogs: Positioned directly behind the lead dogs, the swing dogs help steer the team around corners. As lead dogs make a turn, it is not uncommon for the other dogs to want to jump off the trail to follow them. The swing dogs pull the team in an arc that keeps the other dogs on the trail and brings the sled and musher safely around a corner. Team dogs: These are the team’s brawn. They pull the sled and maintain speed. On average, Iditarod sled dogs pull 300 to 500 pounds (including sled, supplies, and musher). There are several pairs of team dogs, depending on the size of the sled-dog team. Wheel dogs: These are the two dogs closest to the sled. They are usually the largest of the dogs because they are the first to take on the weight of the load being pulled, especially during starts and climbs. Wheel dogs should be even-tempered as they must withstand the constant slamming of the sled runners behind them. It is not uncommon for mushers to switch their dogs’ positions during a race. Some dogs make better leaders in certain weather conditions but not others. Sometimes, after a long run, a musher may wish to give a lead dog a break. Dogs who are fighting may need to be split up, or a female in heat may need to be moved away from the males. Sometimes during a race, after a few dogs have been dropped and a team becomes smaller, a single lead dog may be used instead of two.

They teach them haw (left) and gee (right) but before u teach a dog u should memorize that first otherwise u and your dogs will be confused.

Left is "haw" right is "gee" forward or faster is "hike" and slow down is "woah". Best to start is when you take your dog for a walk say the command as you turn. When they look the right way or speed up and go give them praise and a treat. If you have a bike that's good to start with too since you can steer and break if needed. Find a harness that puts all the pressure on your dogs chest rather than the neck. Bungee leashes are also good since it reduces the shock when your dog pulls.

Gee - Command for right turn. Haw - Command for left turn. Come gee! Come haw! - Command for 180-degree turns in either direction. Line out! - Command for lead dog to pull the team out straight from the sled (mostly used when hooking or unhooking dogs). Mush! Let's go! All right! Hike! - Various commands to get the dog team going. Trail! - Shouted to oncoming mushers or snowmobile users to request right-of-way on the trail. Whoa! - Command used to halt the team.

Two sled dogs could pull you for shorter runs. Four dogs could pull you around all day long. Sled dogs, not pet dogs.
