In this video we share our experience of taking puppy Olive to the vet to get her spayed. It was a difficult decision as we didn't want her to go through pain but in the end we felt it was the right decision for her overall health and future. As this was when the pandemic hit, and vet schedules being swamped, we weren't able to get her in sooner than we wanted so she did go through one heat cycle as shown in our previous video. The spay procedure took approx. 1hr. including preparation and anesthesia. We were provided dog pain medications by the vet to help manage the pain after spay and a cone to put around her head as the wound heals to prevent her from biting and licking the surgical area.
Spaying is known to help prevent uterine infections and breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50% of dogs. Though traditional age for spaying is 6-9 months, there is no age limit for spaying your dog as long as it's healthy. After spaying, behavior is said to be more level and consistent.
