In this video taken on 21st March 2021, I am demonstrating how to introduce the automatic sit and then how I use it in my day to day interactions with Ivy. I am finding that this is having a really positive impact on keeping her as it means she is staying calms and effectively managing herself, which is making life at home and out and about much easier.

Brilliant. Little steps, engaging for the dogs and its always good to have a tune up. You come across as both interested in training and methodical which are vital traits. Well done. Enjoy your videos.

Really interesting to watch, thank you. You are a long, long was ahead of me, but I think we are doing similar things. I am doing smart pup with Jane Arden, and have just ordered Leanne's books, and will order Jane's as well. We made so many mistakes with our first cocker, and I could never imagine them both sitting side by side whilst food is being given. Did it take months of training for this to work? I'm so much enjoying your video's, they are showing me what I can aspire to . Rosie xx

Oh I’m so glad you found it interesting! I also made a million mistakes with Tia my first and I’m continuing to make new mistakes with Ivy, I think with each dog we learn and improve as handlers but as they are each so different there will always be things we reflect on in hindsight that we could have done differently. Sounds like you’re on the right track with things though! The food piece was actually quite straight forward for us, it was something I always did with Tia so when Ivy was a pup she joined the same routine pretty quickly, I’d say within a couple of months. We had a baby gate across our kitchen so I would have them on different sides to start with so neither went to pinch each others food. And then as Ivy’s sit stay in the presence of food improved I opened the gate and then progressed on to having them next to each other. I do supervise them whilst they eat as well so if one finished I make sure that they don’t go and pester the other. If you want to work on this sort of thing I would work on it with them separately first. I would break it down to lots of little stages teaching them to sit and remain sat while you have food in your hand and gradually build to sit and you lowering the food towards the ground, then placing it on the ground, then putting it on the ground and standing up, then adding duration before bringing them together as the competition of another dog does add another difficulty level.

@@SpanielTrainingDiaries Thanks for all your long reply. Yes, I agree we learn more with each dog. Our first Spaniel would sit for at least 30 seconds before the new pup came along for her food and had good manners. I like the idea of a gate in-between when feeding though, ill try that and see how we get on. The wcs pup is as you would expect really intelligent, and he is making good progress with me getting him to sit for his food an extra second or two each day! It certainly is a learning curve, and I am so glad for all you videos, they give me something to aspire to.

This is a really helpful video thank you! I’m getting my puppy next month. Do you have any recommendations for first few weeks and any key book recommendations for the stage I will be at? Would Mission Control be the best one to get?

Hello! Can you tell me how much Ivy's tail is docked by? I'm looking for a puppy at the moment and sometimes worry that a two thirds dock ends up looking very stubby. Ivy's looks perfect though!
@SpanielTrainingDiaries
@SpanielTrainingDiaries 3 года назад
Hi there! Ivy has a three quarter doc which has done the job perfectly for her as she’s never had any tail issues. Given how much she wags, it particularly while working I’m certain she would have split it multiple times but now if she hadn’t been done! I hope that helps! ☺️

what kind of spaniels are your dogs? britanny or springer, I apologize for my ignorance regarding this. They are not common where I live, I never seen one in person.
@SpanielTrainingDiaries
@SpanielTrainingDiaries 3 года назад
No need to apologise! Ivy, the one in this video is a Cocker Spaniel. She is from working lines which I mention as in the UK there is now a huge difference between working lines and show lines, to the point that they are almost completely different breeds in both physic and behaviour. Tia the liver and white one that joins at the end of this video is a English Springer Spaniel. I hope that helps. 😊

Good video. We've just bought (or paid a deposit anyway) on a chocolate working cocker spaniel bitch. Docked tail and white breast, almost looks double of Ivy. Bring her home in 2 weeks. Previously had a Labrador though this is first spaniel we've had. Looking to use clicker as part of training which you seem to use a lot. There's a channel called Follow Fern Dog which I've been watching a lot but will also be using a lot of your methods. Very informative and easy to follow

I’m so glad you find them informative! Very exciting that your getting a new pup, and an Ivy double makes it even better! 😂 Enjoy the journey, they are very different to labs but still an absolute joy to own, train and work.

Hi Florence, I just shared our Instagram name on your other comment. ☺️ I’m not sure what you mean but when I put in get on, are you referring to the hunting cue?
