My southern white english farm bulldogs are just the opposite. They will not chase a lure and do not have a lot of prey drive, but will chase a live rabbit, coyote, and most critters except for deer. They seem to have a lot of livestock guardian dog in their ancestry. Very stubborn and do not like commands. I have one female that will hide rather than to be told to sit to the side when I open the gate to drive my car out. My male will not hide, but still hates being told what to do.

@@loquat44-40 that’s very interesting. It’s neat to see how much a difference breed makes in personality. I wonder if other bulldogs like yours share the same stubborn traits with other dogs the same breed 🤔

@@K9_Anglers It is more of a mastiff trait. The term bulldog covers a lot of behaviors. In the south dogs with large heads and somewhat shorter jaws were all called bulldogs. The white english are not a 'pure' breed and it used to be regions and families had their own lines with differences in appearance and size. Generally most of them were laid back, but the degree for this type of behavior even varies with in the three that I have. The smallest one that is actually more bulldog in phenotype is the least laid back. The true bulldogs of the early 1800's had a lot of terrier in them and were not laid back at all. More like american pit bulls. My little one if she wants out will actually bark. The other two softly cry and look up expectantly. It would take about several pages to describe this behavior. Some american bulldog lines of today have american pit bull and also bullmastiff in them and are not laid back. Many american pit bull types have behavior that is not so different than the malinois prey drive. They are also quite trainable. But the urge to be game and to fight is strong in the original non-pet quality lines of pit bulls.

French adjective Malinois is a French adjective that refers to something related to Mechelen, a city in Belgium. The French name for Mechelen is Malines.

That actually seems like a low-energy play session for a Mal... or do Mals get chill as they get older? My "flirt pole" setup is a little longer, broomstick length and maybe 5-6 feet of twine, with a microfiber shop towel tied to it. (Another setup has a hollow rubber ball on the end) My 12 week old Mal goes NUTS chasing it, acrobatic leaps, and incredible speed chasing it, like she's running down a rabbit. (We play in the grass mostly) When she catches it, it's a tug-of-war to-the-death. This is not a "my dog is more of a jockette than your dog" thing, I'm new to Mals and just looking to understand the range of Mal behavior. Was your dog like I describe as a puppy, and now is good with more tame play? Do I need to sign my Mal pup up for agility for Mals to finally go kick some Border Collie tail, lol? I had one person say I needed to not play too hard with her as a pup because some issue involving the growth plates in her legs will cause her to have joint movement problems in old age. Any truth to that?

@@jdaniels1313 Thanks for sharing and great question! I’d assume Mal’s would get SLIGHTLY tamer with play once they hit a certain age but I wouldn’t know for sure since I’ve never experienced a mal puppy lol. Both Mal’s that I’ve had I got them once they were adults but I’m sure that him running on concrete plays a tiny role on his speed since it looks like he knows to be careful so he won’t scrape his paw while running. I’ve played with him on grass and he’s slightly faster, not by a lot though. As far as regular day to day life excluding play sessions, my mal has gotten a lot more chill with the more training we do. I got him when he was about 1 and a half and it’s been a year and he’s chilled quite a bit in the house. Although, he came from a rough previous life though so that plays a part too. It sounds like we’ll need your mal on the frontlines to go head to head against the border collies cause It sounds like you got a hot rocket of a Mal lol! I’m sure she’ll be fine health wise as long as the play doesn’t put immense strain on her still developing joints of course (jumping from high places, etc) I believe that diet and genetics would play more of a role on her health rather than how intense you play with her. I’m curious to know if she does maintain that energy but I’m sure she will just cause she’s a mal!

@@K9_Anglers Here is a video of a "flirt pole" session with my Mal girl. She is about 4 months old in this video. I did get some clarification on the growth plates thing, basically the trainer told me to do these types of jumping/agility sessions on grass, not on concrete or other hard surfaces. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ttsbpPGUir0.html Just to tease you a little bit, I titled it "Low energy play Malligator fishing session" on my wife's RU-vid account. I hope she'll be a good kayak fishing buddy at some point, haven't tried it yet with her.

@@K9_Anglers Lately my Mal girl has taken to pool swimming fetch. She will swim the length of the pool (40 feet), retrieve a tossed toy, and swim the length of the pool back. She will do this like 30+ times in a row until the human gets tired. For a while we put a doggie life jacket on her, but she decided she'd rather go without.
