Doheny Mansion | Visiting with Huell Howser | KCET 

Wow.

My family lived very near this mansion in late 1940’s Thur the 1950’s (on Hope Street), in a big house my grandmother owned. Sadly house was demolished to make way for DMV parking lot. My mother would walk me to 1st grade (1954) at St Vincent’s Church/ school. The neighborhood was so charming, Exposition Park, the museum all right there. This is why I LOVE L.A!

That is an amazing story, wow.

I am a little younger than you, I think, but I remember the days before electronic surveillance was everywhere. I have fond memories of sneaking into places when all you had to do was tell a security guard a good story, carry a clipboard, and sign in with a false I.D. If no one was around, and it was late at night, you simply opened an unlocked window or scaled a fence. My friends and I were on a mission to sneak into as many off-limits swimming pools as we could. We'd climb a fence or, in the case of the Women's Club on Durant Ave., open a sub basement window. We'd quickly strip off, swim a couple of laps, jump out, towel off, get dressed, and be gone in the night. It took about 20 minutes. The teenagers manning the desk at the Claremont Swim Club could've cared less, as long as you signed in and your "membership" number had the correct number of digits in it. I once signed in as Nancy Reagan and felt a little paranoid, but I needn't have worried. The kiddos were too stoned to notice and no one ever double checked the names on the sign-in sheets. The ultimate score would've been the two pools at Hearst Castle, but those were too inaccessible and too well guarded. As a 7 year old, I did manage to swim in every pool of every big hotel on the original Las Vegas strip in 1955: The Last Frontier, the Dunes, Sahara, Sands, Flamingo, Desert Inn, and maybe one or two more, but my parents were complicit.

IZt was also a filming location as I worked on a show in 1 of those buildings about 14 years ago.

Huell was so impressed with California, he could hardly contain his enthusiasm. He was born in Tennessee and when he got his first look at California, I imagine he was hooked. I LOVE his down home southern charm. I am a native of this area and as such I can relate. So much to see and explore.

It was Edward L. Dohney that passed away in 1935. His second wife passed away in 1958.

From what I can gather based on the episode, it was made in 2000.

That's Huell Howser. He has passed away, but in is own style, he brought a lot of Ca. most interesting sites. He was on PBS.

Perhaps I’m wrong, but I don’t believe he ever openly acknowledged if he was gay. If he was, he was private about it.
