Ernő Dohnányi (1877-1961) performs (1954) at University of Ohio, Athen, Ohio:
W.A. Mozart (1756-1791):
Fantasie in C Minor, K.475 (1785) (Adagio-Allegro-Andantino-Piu Allegro)
The only way I can describe this elusive miracle of a composition is to suggest it is entirely operatic. From the deep, dark, foreboding opening Adagio we are taken, in this performance of unbelievable naturalness and clarity, through at-once sharp and subtle characterizations and contrasts in Allegro, Andantino, and Piu Allegro sections with lyricisms, declamations, recitativi, alternating active and reflective 'spoken' rhythms and melodies. The near-12-minute 'opera' comes to an end as it began - profoundly dark and dramatic.
