I've suffered with stomach problems for a long time and so I'm finally doing an at-home allergy + intolerance test and sharing my results! I found this whole process SO fascinating but I'm sad about some of my results!

Instead of ordering another test online to double check the first one, wouldn't it be better to do one at an actual allergy clinic. That would be more reliable and more interresting, because in addition to getting to know what youre allergic/intolerant to, you can use that result to check the validity of the online tests. Because there's a whole lot of shady stuff going on with online tests.

These tests aren’t accurate at all. You need to go to your GP for a 100% accurate test.

Has your GP tested for Celiacs Disease? Also, be careful as these ‘At Home Testing Kits’ aren’t always accurate
@zoetaylor6457

Hi Katie, I work in an NHS accredited immunology laboratory as a trainee biomedical scientist. These tests are accurate at all, especially how they didn’t ask for much blood. We test for IgE levels for a whole range of allergens and you need at least 300ul of serum (just one component of blood) for a couple of tests, and blood is taken via venepuncture. Our tests are all validated and verified and the quality of these tests is strictly controlled. I would recommend asking your gp for a referral to an allergy clinic where they can request allergen testing. You can also ask you GP for a TTG test, which will see if you have coeliacs disease (although you must not cut gluten out before this test as it can cause false negatives). Please don’t waste your money on another test, as I’ve said this can be done more accurately through proper, regulated NHS Immunology laboratory’s.

I've done the exact same testing kit over a year ago now. I was already gluten and dairy free but still got horrific bloating after meals. The test came back and I was intolerant to SO MANY fruit and vegs (as well as suspected gluten/ dairy/ grains). With the suggestion of a nutritionist I cut out all the red intolerances straight away and then slowly introduced them to see if the test was accurate. I'd say 90% of it was really accurate and since cutting out those I've not had an issue with bloating since. It's a bit mixed though as my Mum did one at the same time and she definitely has severe intolerances but the test didn't pick up on any of them.

Hi Katie, just be wary of these tests, there isn't a great evidence base for them and they aren't recommended by the British Dietary Association (BDA). In veterinary medicine (I'm a vet) we recommend elimination diets rather than advising blood tests due to the limited number of studies conducted. Hope you're keeping well, love your videos :) X

Definitely go to your doctor. I have a gluten intolerance but do not have celiac disease. I also developed a tree nut allergy as an adult that I didn't have before. You can have an oral allergy to the kiwi but not have an overall allergy to it.

I would 100% get a Celiac test done! I have Celiac and honestly, it’s hard at first getting a grip on what brands taste good or what to bake with, but I feel like once you get a handle on that it’s actually really easy to follow! I think there’s a substitute for almost everything these days, fortunately. When I started at 15 (I’m just shy of 29 now) there weren’t a lot of options and the word cardboard definitely comes to mind lol but there are so many good brands now! If you do end of having Celiac, I can send you a list of the best brands and baking substitutes 😊

Ive got IBS and I cut out gluten and dairy as much as I can. It’s actually easy to do it 95% of the time or even more- Sainsbury’s have some lovely gluten and dairy free stuff. Sometimes I eat meals with my triggers in but now I know what they are it’s much more manageable. Kudos to you for doing the fodmap diet! Hope you can work out more of your triggers soon x

I would probably just see your gp for tests such as celiac to be fair, as well I know a person that has it and it is a mental almost stomach bug reaction to eating it so its not like you wouldn't know your having a reaction after every meal with it (not just painful bloating) , like you would know yourself after any meals with bread etc.. The girl I knew had soup with a tiny bit of barley in it and for like several days after it was running from her (sorry tmi) I would defo asked to get a gp blood test or ask gp to get referred to a NHS allergic clinic and hopefully you can get definitive answers 🤞🏻💕

How interesting. I am similar to you often get awful tummy pains or bloating and I’ve done similar try cutting things out but still can’t pin point certain things so this test seems a great starting point I’ll be looking into to try as well. One thing I can say is Sainsburys already remove gluten from a lot of their meat and other foods so you may be surprised what you can eat as a supermarket it is something they are really engaged with making more foods available to those with intolerances x

Hi Katie! As so many have been saying, be careful with these kits, they aren't the most reliable and sometimes blood isn't the best indicator. I am allergic to milk, however the only test that picked that up was one i had in a lab that gave me the equivalent of 3 glasses of milk to drink. As the blood test didn't show my allergy, everyone thought it was safe for me to take this test. It almost killed me - I lost all my senses and became dead cold. Thankfully it was all inside a lab and they diagnosed then and there that I was badly allergic to milk.

Sometimes the allergy tests can be wrong. I've paid for food allergy tests at Harley Street and some things comes out inaccurate. The GP dont often refer people on the NHS as it can get inclusive results, the best way is elimination diet which is a long process with a food diary.

Well worth getting a coeliac test from your GP. If it’s positive they’ll want you to have an endoscopy to confirm it but I declined that and they still ‘diagnosed’ me with it if that makes sense. You’ll have to eat gluten in the time leading up to your blood test though else it won’t be an accurate result xx

If you’re concerned you have this deffo go to GP but make sure you have been eating gluten prior. I am coeliac myself xx

Hiya Katie! I've messaged you on Insta before and I'm probably sounding like a broken record. BUT, I took the exact same test over here in Canada under the guidance of my naturopath and mine LIT UP. Like the majority of the chart was in the yellow or red and was it was listing things I knew through elimination I was not intolerant to. What my naturopath heavily HEAVILY emphasized to me is that it is highly likely I am not intolerant to all those things. Instead, she said that often, when there's a lot of inflammation (I believe) in the body (could be caused by a number of things, a major one being SIBO as I mentioned in my messages on insta). As such, I think that speaks to the validity of the testing in that it can only provide a loose picture and can be affected by so many outside factors (with things showing up and not showing up). OH! And concerning the kiwi, your reaction sounds like an oral allergy which a lot of people have with things like kiwis and mangos. Thus, as it's an allergy, it would be unlikely to show up on an intolerance test. I also agree with everyone here in getting tested for celiac at your GP

Not sure if you will read this Katie, but if it turns out you are not celiac, I would recommend trying to make your own sourdough bread. The bacteria in starter and the fermentation process make it easier for your gut to break down the flour, so some gluten intolerant people can eat it without issue. If you search 'Why Some Gluten-Sensitive People Can Still Eat Sourdough Bread' there is a really good article about it by bonappetit. :)

Katie please be careful what food you cut out of your diet before getting get tested with your GP. I’m a coeliac and to get an accurate result you have to still be eating gluten. So many people cut it out of their diet only to have to start eating it again so they can get tested, which can make you so poorly. It’s just not worth the heart or stomach ache! The NHS will do this all for you for free along with separate allergy tests. I hope you manage to figure out what’s causing you problems xx

These tests unfortunately have no evidence base… you can’t test for intolerances, only allergies that create an immune response such as coeliac disease, but this needs to be tested by a GP and you have to be including gluten in your diet at the time in order for the result to be accurate (the test is called a TTG). You will save yourself a lot of time (and money on tests such as these) if you go and see a gastroenterology dietitian. Make sure they’re registered with the HCPC - you can check this yourself
