Yessssss exactly. So many things that get thrown or given away because people didn't know how to mend something

The ones that always amaze me are when it's just a button missing. I got a pair of fantastic pants for free because of a missing button.

Couldn’t agree more-for everyone. I’m in my sixties, and home economics for girls was required in the 8th grade school I went to. Besides cooking and etiquette basics, we learned sewing. In 5th grade we were introduced to sewing machines by making a drawstring bag; in 6th grade we made a skirt with an elastic waist; in the 7th grade it was a skirt with a zipper; and in the 8th grade we had to make our graduation dresses. These home economics skills taught me how to stretch the grocery budget. Can’t begin to tell you how much I grew to rely on sewing. Bathing suits; my son’s crib ensemble; bathrobes; a gown for an event; clothes for my son; the list goes on. Was this promoting gender roles? Maybe? I wanted to take shop, too. And later spent 7years in the U.S. Army. So I can sew, shoot, and make a bag of beans feed my family for a week.

I'm a teacher at an arts school. At my school, sewing is mandatory for all students in grades 6-9, and most students take it in grades 11/12 as well. Provincially, students are required to have some applied design, skills, and technologies classes each year from grades 6-9, but it's up to individual schools or districts to decide what's offered and what's mandatory.

​@mapatterson173 I am near the same age and home ec was and option. Woodworking or home ec. I took Woodworking and loved it. Then as a student aid, getting paid, over the summer I did my stent in home ec. I knew how to sew but there I learned to fit. Skills are invaluable as I travel thru life
