Sometimes two important questions have the same answer
Question 1: what is the most important thing that musicians should do to get better at music theory?
Question 2: what is that thing that we guitar players never practice?
Care to guess?...
.....
....
...
..
.
.
.
Yes, it's ear training :)
Yeah, I know you'd rather walk barefoot on broken glass than practicing this for even a minute.
And I agree. Personally when I was learning I skimped on my ear training because:
1. It looks hard. Heck, it looks impossible at first.
2. There's not a good explanation of how to practice it in a gradual way
3. I'd rather play my guitars
Ok, but what if you can have these 3 cakes and eat them too?
That is, what if you could practice ear training while playing your guitar, with a very easy, simple, gradual exercise?
Well, if you are still here (half of my readers compulsively deleted this email the moment they read 'ear training'...) then I have exactly what you need in this video:
BONUS: in the video you are going to hear me sing ;-) Never say my videos don't have comic relief!

I just love this guy! His enthusiastic and friendly greeting always brings a smile to my face. There are some people that I meet that immediately could be a close personal friend, and Tomaso is one of them. Though he sometimes jokes about his Italian accent, there is no question that his English is impeccable, both written and spoken. And of course, his knowledge of guitar and music theory is absolutely the best as is his gift for teaching it. Thank you Maestro Zillow for all these great videos.

I have a similar problem, even though I've been playing guitar for some years, it's hard for me to play melodies by ear, I'm much better at that with a keyboard to be honest, it's quite frustrating. I'll try this exs.

This is a totally random thought that I had as I was watching this video. Why is it that guitar players refer to the string and fret position as opposed to the string and note when explaining fingering of chords? I feel like that’s why most guitar players don’t know the notes on the guitar neck.
@afonsomendes6907
@afonsomendes6907 3 года назад
because a guitar player can tune his guitar to whatever hed like, whereas a pianos tuning is fixed. Atleast thats the only way i can explain it in my head. Can you imagine telling some1 how to play a cool lick in an open G tuning, without using numbers notation? itd be a huge nightmare xd
@jcmartin1978
@jcmartin1978 3 года назад
@@afonsomendes6907 that does make a lot of sense actually, but I still think that if we at least referred to the notes in standard tuning consistently, most guitar players would know the notes of the neck. I’m trying to learn my neck completely now, and it’s not easy for me because I’m an old dog trying to learn a new trick.
@afonsomendes6907
@afonsomendes6907 3 года назад
@@jcmartin1978 Well I definitely agree with you there, forsaking number notation for letter notation would certainly make it easier to memorize the fretboard, or perhaps even make it a natural consequence of playing the guitar and learning songs. Also, in my experience, old , HUMAN dogs, are only worse at learning new tricks when they believe they are worse at learning because they are old ;) the human mind keeps its learning capacity throughout its lifetime, and this thought is the easiest crux possible to fall back to when one encounters difficulty in learning. Remember, you can learn anything, unless youre in a vegetative state or suffering from severe dementia ;) I believe in you, keep learning about this amazing instrument. Cheers from Portugal!

TPK A2Z, if you haven’t already started, use Dr. Zillio’s method for learning the fretboard notes … exactly as he describes. I did it, for five to ten minutes a day and learned it in two and a half months! It has opened up the fretboard in ways I never imagined. Tomasso is brilliant…and fun 😎

Hi, I love your videos! I have a question: can you explain to me the bVII chord and it’s harmonic functions? Because I see it very often in jazz (e.g. in the backdoor 2-5-1 in „Misty“) but also in Pop songs (e.g. in „hello“ from Shakespeare sisters; the third chord (E) of the Verse) but I don’t understand why it works. After all it’s a non-diatonic chord... and it’s not a simple secondary dominant with a clear harmonic function either. I also noticed that most of the time it seems to be a dominant chord so a bVII7 chord but it is often not resolving to the chord that’s a perfect 5th below the root of the bVII7 chord so it doesn’t act as a secondary dominant.
@Gwens42
@Gwens42 3 года назад
the bVII (bVII 7) belongs to the natural minor scale (or to the mixolydian mode and in that case it's a M7 chord not a 7 chord). So whenever you hear it in a major context, you can interpret it as "modal mixture" which is when the compositor choose ( consciously or not) to add to his progression a chord from the parralel (parralel meaning same root but different scale) minor scale (or mixolydian scale) to break out of the unsurprising sound of the diatonic chords . Most of the case it "works" because of voice leading , for example in C , the bVII chord is Bb7 which contains the notes Bb D F Ab . Resolving Bb7 to C we see that Bb & D can go up to C & E and F & Ab can go down to E & G. making the resolution even more effective due to the contrary motion . hope that helped ;)

I prefer the substitution because of the strong movement between 2 major chords. To me, it's like having a second occurrence of a IV V relationship in the key.

There is also another reason why this works... I'll make a video about it.
