Doing the 50 Maintenance on the TYM T654. Changing Front Axle fluid, Engine oil, and Hydraulic fluid 

I had lots of empty oil cans, I filled them up with used oil. Also filled the empty buckets back up with used oil. I take it to Walmart auto center, and they will take the used oil and have it recycled or disposed of.

I've got a TYM T503HST with a Perkins diesel. The manual is nothing short of horrible. When I did my 50 hour maintenance I kept calling the dealership to get correct information on the location of filters, drain ports, fill ports, and types of fluids and filters to buy. I'm doing the 550 hour maintenance now and consulting the copious notes I scribbled all over the manual. Even though some of my filter and drain plug locations differ from yours, this video was a big help at refreshing my memory on the details that always cause so much aggravation. Believe it or not, your tractor appears to be easier to work on than mine. My oil filter is difficult to reach and extremely hard to loosen. I broke three tools in the process of doing so. Also, I have to remove my battery before I can safely drain the fuel separator and replace the fuel filter. I wish TYM would make demo videos showing how to do this sort of routine maintenance. Better yet, I wish all vehicle manufacturers would force their designers and engineers to perform maintenance on the products they create so they can see how needlessly difficult and confusing some of it is.

As you listen to the rain pouring down while you are well sheltered and have a nice, solid concrete floor to work from I am sure you know that Pole Barn was worth every cent.

hello from the Netherlands . use a large syringe with a small stroke on it to suck out the excess oil. this works much more precisely to get the right level . they should have such a large syringe at the pharmacy for only a few dollars. I don't know if you can get it cheaply via Amazon or something like that, but I always use a suction pump on 12V for the largest volume of oil with the pump you can pump it right into a large jerry can without spilling next to it . and only then do I remove the oil plug for the last bit, but then there is almost no pressure more because the large volume is already out. If you put the spout of a5 gallon bucket on the high side when it's full it will be a lot better

Best to put an absorbent mat down to catch any spills. Keep your new floor clean.

A waste oil heater would be handy. Free heat. Lol. Lincoln makes a hand pump that would make filling the transmission way easier. I look at maintenance this way- next time will be way quicker.

Years ago my Dad gave me some Craftsman 8 pt sockets for square headed bolts and drain plugs. Don't use them often but it's nice to have them for jobs like your drain plugs.

I use cardboard from boxes on the floor and it works perfect.

Hi Evan, you might want to consider putting down a large tarp and driving on it to complete services or even consider a garage / barn floor epoxy paint in the area you are going to be doing service in. Looks great and makes clean up a breeze and you won't stain your new floor. Thanks for sharing rainy day in Texas as well.

This is great. I'm grateful you've filmed this, so everyone considering a purchase of this tractor will know exactly what they're getting themselves into. Maintenance is essential to owning something like this and can be the difference between a good purchase and calling it a waste of money. At UPS we used to treat our concrete floors with tung oil and kerosene, shiny beautiful floors

A trick I use to take off those 1/2 inch square headed bolts. Take a 1/2 inch drive socket with an Allen key on the end and put the 1/2 inch drive side that goes on the ratchet on the square bolt so the Allen wrench points out and find a 6 sided socket that fits on that Allen key socket and put that on and then turn it off... I mean the 12 point sockets work until you round off the corners. Hope this helps

Next time take yourself a chisel about the size of a sharpie and knock a hole in the filter and let it drain before you change the filter back when I worked on heavy equipment that was a great thing to do

I'm at 54.8 hours lol. running the 254 t.b.l. and only have 3.5 acres and a 16' wood shed!! they ALL was a lyin' when they said size didn't matter!! lol I'm a happy man though. great video. I'll catch up on my maintenance today thanks to your video. I think I've got all my tools up here with me. Weld a nut to the squares so a regular socket will fit it! I’ve bloodied more knuckles on square plugs than anything else!

I don't know if the Harbor Freight battery operated transfer pump will work with oil, but if it does, you could use it to suck out most of the oil of the tractor so you can you don't make a big mess. I see people using that pump to fill up their tractor with fuel. It would also help filling the oil back up so you don't over fill. Thanks again for another entertaining and informative video.

I do a lot of work in my shop you should see my floor but it’s a work shop. I have the same tractor at my place I love it.

Good maintenance is always good for the equipment and you do a good job of that.

Evan turn your bucket around so pour spout is on top it will pour smooth and nor glug,

Sugestion...plastic 55 gallon barrel....cut 18inches from bottom it holds a lot of oil then pump it into recycling buckets...and if you're still looking for beefy gloves...try WELDERS gloves...

On my 5 gallon cans I install a air valve stem in the lid across from the drain nozzel and remove the valve core and I have a vent for the can when I pour the oil. When I get more oil I switch the covers or install a valve valve stem in the new can. I keep may empty cans for the drain oil and the vent makes it easy to drain the vent makes it easy to empty the can. On my qt. cans of oil I install a valve stem in the cap and makes it easy to pour the oil. Alot of times I don't need a funnel. The cap goes from can to can.

Another suggestion, I took a steel 55 gal drum and cut the end off, about 6 in. up from the end. So you cut off the end and have a big drain pan. May hold close to 10 gal.

Evan had to come back to this video to tell you what a friend of mine taught me. He had a 3ft kiddie pool from dollar store that he used to catch the hydraulic fluid when changing the filters and draining the fluid on a mahindra 4540 didn't spill a drop. When he finished he pumped it out with a 12v fluid pump into containers. Maybe this will help in the future and tell Rebekah that I said hi and Thank You for being a nurse in these troubled times it takes a lot of patience and kindness to do what she does.👍

Yes Evan, they do have a hand pump. I brought mine from Harbour Freight. Alot easy than holding the can up.

You can use concrete sealer on the floors so the oil doesn't seep into the floor

My TYM 574 is coming up for it's 50 hour service and I'm having one heck of a time getting a Maintenance Manual to perform the service. Love the tractor, but so far the dealer has been useless.

Always take the filler bung out first, that way if it won't come off you can still use the machine until you get some way of removing it.

Just completed my TYM 574, 50 hour service and it took all day because every nut was way too tight, especially on the front axle. (I couldn't remove the two upper vent nuts). The hydraulic filter took hours to remove. I had to borrow a pair of huge channel locks to remove it and even there, it took all my strength to get it off Nothing should be that tight!!.

I spray crc electronic cleaner on my oil spills and it cleans it right up

Hat's off to you, As a city slicker, I never thought that tractor maintenance can be be this hard and messy. To the tractor manufacturers, maybe it would be a better practice and also as as a great sales tactic to give to customers free or bonus tools for use in maintenance. Despite the barn shed full of tools you have, you said you had to buy some at the tractor supply store. If i were a dealer, I'd do that as a business practice. Not all tractor owners have those specialized tools. If you care for them, they will give you their trust.

There's a product out for years called Pig blanket which you can buy off Amazon comes on a roll and each section is perforated to tear. Put it down before servicing tractor or truck next time

Always use the correct socket. If you need leverage then get yourself a cheater bar.

On the rear oil filters: Drill a hole in them and let them drain. You are disposing of them anyways.

i keep the 5 qt jugs from my motor oil then i lay the 5 gal bucket on their side on a raised surface (tailgate) with the spigot up then "roll" the 5 gal bucket slowly and pore into the 5 qt jug , when near full just roll the big bucket back up till it stops running out. saves on the back and messes. i like the belt strap filter wrenches one size fits all!

Just a suggestion when you change out the old hydraulic you can take a punch and poke a hole in the bottom to drain the old filter that way it makes less of a mess

Use TireJect Off-Road Tire Sealant on that leaking tire won't ruin your tire or rim like most other Tire sealants

New shop floor is like a new service truck. She ain't broke in till it gets dirty. It'll be fine. 👍

I purchased a T654 TYM tractor as well. I enjoyed seeing how to do everything before I had to do everything. My Hydrolic filters were installed with no lube on the seals and so tight I had to remove the head that holds the filters and took it to some mechanics to remove them. What a trying time. I didn't spill any oil as I watched your video carefully. Thanks for making the mistakes for us all! Very cool Brother.... Don't know if you have had a similar experience when it comes to getting parts but there seems to be a problem with TYM's ability to get you the parts you need in a timely manner. If you have a resource for getting parts for your TYM T654 I would love for you to share it. I purchased a simple pump and filled my fluid levels up using that to avoid having to lift those 5 gal pails. FYI...

I rounded a couple of them air vent nuts on the front axle when I did the 50h service on my T474. I ordered new ones from a dealer in ID that had them in stock.

Evan, you can use a turkey baster to pull some oil out of the front axle, or you can use a large syringe to draw it out, and add a piece of fuel hose to it to reach in far enough.

Servicing equipment is never as easy as it sounds. LOL I have a large metal oil drip pan made like a baker's pan, that is designed to place buckets or oil drain pans on, to catch any drips or splashes. Really helps with the messes we all make. 👍

A really interesting Video! The Deutz Engines are very good. I have a old Deutz Tractor built in 1970 with now 12000 Hours and no big repairs so far. That safety stop is not going to anything just sitting there. You need to lower the loader gently onto the stop so there is pressure on it.

More important than a pump to add the oil in, a suction removal pump would make servicing much more efficient.

Amazon has a battery hand pump works great.

Save cardboard for when changing fluids. Also a good concrete sealer always helps, thumbs up !

Check the manual for the front axle dip stick and see if you need to screw it in or just stick it in to check the level

You can buy 8 point sockets to use on square pipe plugs.

Evan, when you use the safety block on the front lift, let it down until it touches the bottom part of the cylinder. That way it can’t slip if something happens.

on my old yanmar all threaded dipsticks you just set it on there not screw it in when checking the level. but the push in type like in your engine those you do push in.

One can use a large box end wrench and some baler twine to make an oil filter wrench!

If you take a small amount of gasoline on the oil before you use the Oil Dry, it will help absorb the oil in the concrete.

I have a set of off brand 1/2 in. Drive sockets just for square head plugs or bolts or for most plugs on equipment flip the socket over to see if plug is 3/8 or 1/2 in. Then weld a nut and bolt to that size of socket. If you flip that 5 gallon pail 180 degrees you’ll find it’l pour better

You need to use cardboard or a tarp under the tractor to help keep your new floor clean

It would be nice if all MFG used even amounts of oil like 1,2,3,4,5, ect and put petcocks instead of plugs

For back end oil changes pump out as much oil as possible with a suitable hose into a container via hydraulic valve until systems starts to cavitate, then shut down engine IMMEDIATELY.

Use a block of wood to grind the floor dry into the concrete. Stain wil lift/disappear

Looks good. No “easy” way to do hydraulic change! Nice having that new pole barn for the maintenance. Love the fact that when you get frustrated you never lose your cool. After you clean up your oil dry, use Dawn dish soap. If that doesn’t get out the stain, a product called Fastball (buy it on line) works well. Not all fun is it! Having even a small homestead there is a lot of work. Nice job!

I was always told not to put thread tape on hydraulic stuff - I think it can break down and get into the hydraulic fluid? I'm not an expert, but you might want to check ? I think they're meant to either be tapered threads (eg NPT) or o-ring seals, and either way you shouldn't need tape.

Eight point sockets work well for square plugs.

I thought I would suggest because you have a new floor in the barn that when you are changing the fluids on the tractor or anything else that you should use a rubber mat with the pails so you don't get oil on your floor, Then when you are done you can spray the rubber mat down and let dry, this way their is no mess on your new floor. Just a suggestion.

You need to paint the floor to stop oil being absorbed into it

Have you looked into a low profile catch pan on wheels. I think northern tools has some up to 20 gallons. I think those by the name of “Roughneck”. There are other brands too. They go for 200-300 or so.
