Great stuff. Tooth and Nail to this day is one of my favorite from the era. Lynch (as much of a prima donna as he was) had some incredible solos on that record. Don's honesty is refreshing. He was that band and clearly earned his stripes despite the slaggin he gets now for his vocals not being what they were is 84/85.
At the time, they were trying to maintain a career, so, they couldn't say anything that would kill it. (You see what happened to Kevin DuBrow after he opened his mouth...he got kicked out of his own band!)
If I remember right there were interviews in magazines like Circus and Hit Parader and the bandmembers would talk about tensions between Lynch and Dokken but they never really went into detail. Too be honest I am surprised the band kept it together long enough to record Under Lock And Key.
man this was a great great interview......don is very down to earth and tells it like it is. I sure am thankful for the albums that they gave us working together. still love em to this day.
Wow! Hit radio gold subscribing to this. Thank you! Btw, I met George at NAMM back in the 90’s. Caught him in the hallway; he was running late for something. And some promotor somebody was rushing him along and I quickly asked for his autograph. This other guy tells them he doesn’t have time but he stops and says something like “I’ll make the time.” I met a lot of famous people around that time and I will never forget how cool that was of George.
Thanks for the share ... i Met him in 2007 ??? in Atlanta at a Guitar seminar .Sam Ash music store ... signed my Peavey Vandenberg Guitar and a "tooth and nail" chord book ...we both got a kick out of the green Army duct tape holding it together he asked how long i had it and i told him since 83 he said 1883??? i told him whenever his old ass wrote it .... Great times !!
Don is a great storyteller. This was a great interview. I like hearing about all the stuff that takes place behind the scenes. That’s the beauty of full in bloom, it takes you backstage and to the studio to find out the dirt and details.
Thanks for these great interviews. Very enlightening. I do want to say though, the original tension between Don and George was that Don wanted to continue to play guitar in the band and even play some lead, but George wanted to be THE guitarist and just have Don focus on the singing. George finally won out but I think Don was jealous and resented it. He also never thought of the "boys" as being a real band. Just the studio guys he got to play "his" songs so he could have an album. You hear him in these interview clips saying they would write their songs and he would write his. I always loved Dokken's albums until they broke apart, but there's always 3 sides to every story; theirs, yours and the truth Lol. I cut my teeth playing Dokken's music when I first really got into playing and enjoyed every song. They were just the kind of heavy rocking groove that did it for me. Good times
I love it when don sums up the quarrels he had with George, "like little children in the sandbox...." I think that Don was definitely more mature than George and being the composer of most songs it was natural form him to be the leader of Dokken.
Damn this is gold thanks for sharing . What an incredible album, in my top 5 or so of all time . Great radio play songs but those sleepers that didn’t get as much radio play When Heaven Comes Down and Turn on the Action damn I love those songs . Been listening to this album since 84’ and I ain’t never gonna stop 😁
I met Jeff Pilson when he was auditioning for Flesh & Blood. I was working at West LA Music, got his number back in landline days. I told him about my Guitarist friend, Parrish Hultquist, I got him an audition. Pilson had the TV Batman theme on his voicemail. 89 or 90.
C'mon man. Put some fire into it,put some LYNCH into it!" Don voicing his constructive criticism in the form of an incredible compliment and sign of respect for George's playing IMO.
WOW. What a First.. NOBODY is doing this Album and Band.. OH What they are Missing.. THANK YOU.. One of my all time FAVORITE and Pivotal Albums..THANK YOU for CLip
Fascinating about that live album. That's such a shredding album too. Amazing. I got that and Back for the Attack for Christmas one year. Both of them haha.
The tooth and nail album is always one hard rock/ metal classic that I just can't get tired of and can always listen to from start to finish. Every song rocks and every lynch solo blazes! It also has a nice raw, live feel that is sort of missing in the more heavily produced albums that follow which are also great records! #rokkenthedokken
For all the success he has had and the legions of guitar players who have admired George over the last 35-40 years, he's an absolutely miserable human being.
Dude did drugs, did roids, had a sensitive personality. The slighest thing would upset him. I asked jeff pilson on cameo about working with george and he said He used to throw tantrums in the studio. He was indeed one of the best guitarists of the 80s.but its his misery and attitude that got him bouncing around 500 diffrent short lived projects
Well stupid me I keep thinking this is called in full bloom. Full in bloom is what it’s called I got it now I got it Killer killer interviewer great questions great interviews fantastic channel.
Hmm , these two Don and George's verbal / physical jousting in Dokken reminds me of Sting and Stuart Copeland's jousting in the same ways in The Police . Don and Stuart are Cancer Crabs , Sting and George are Libras , maybe that's it 😂 . Basically oil and water personalities clashing . Seems strange / odd how George never wanted to do ballads , but was so good at them riffing and soloing on them in Dokken .
I never really understood the friction between Don and George. If you meet them, they were the coolest dudes. But when they get together there is also some shit going on.
Dokken musically was a great band. Personality wise? It was an utter trainwreck. If youve ever been in a band before youd know one of the most frustrating things about being in a band was knowing you could at times write and create magic with someone you absolutely want to punch in the face. Unfortunately for some bands the music wasnt enough enough to endure it. One band in paticular that didnt get along was the ramones. They hated eachother but kept the band together
Geoff Workman moved to Denver with his wife in the late 80’s/early 90’s where she started a band management company and he produced demos for those local bands. Getting to work with their “Original Projects Unlimited” management group was the pinnacle of local band dreams in 1991. Here’s a song Geoff produced by arguably the biggest band in Denver in 1991, “She Beaten Happy” by the band Dogs of Pleasure: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZDc_pYZKtsI.html
A familiar story of big 80s Hard Rock bands who disintegrate due to drink ,drugs or ego's !! Sad to hear Don & George constantly fighting with the direction of the band. Maybe conflicting personalities contributed. Loved Dokken ! Great band.
There’s GOTTA be a story of dokken JUST like the story of quiet riot in 2014, now Frankie banali is dead, so, speaking of being drunk, where do I find the full story of DOKKEN, BIG FAN, don dokken basically took the words out of my mouth, DUDE, FUCK, come warm weather 2021, I WILL ride my electric scooter/bike JAMMING ON DOKKEN.
It's funny that you talk about that. I remember it was hard to scrape money together for a cassette, so just for fun I went to the inflation calculator to determine how much that $8 cassette would cost in today's dollars and the answer is $23!
Good God ... Thats just weird ... That kinda infighting seems very odd to me. I had no idea that George was like that in the studio. If anything its usually the bass players that get burnt in the mixdown
I wore that cassette tape out in my Walkman. One of my all time favorite Metal albums. I was in the Army at the time and used it to get fired up and ready to Kill !
George Lynch sounds like he was a nightmare back then. Don might be controlling and a bit egotistical (fair enough as he started the band and did it for years before the classic line-up was in place), but it sounds like George Lynch had a full-on personality disorder.
@Steve Damien I know what you mean but the producer backed up Don's version in his interview. Don can seem harsh and blunt with his criticism but I don't think he's a liar, just hard-headed.
@Andrew Salter I heard an interview with him and Michael Sweet by Eddie Trunk a couple of yrs ago and he came off as a total dick. He was actually pretty rude to Michael Sweet so I wouldn't be surprised if they don't work together again. He just seems kind of arrogant, egotistical, and poor people skills. Don is actually really complimentary about him most of the time.
Don and George never got along, but it tells you something when Mick and Jeff also wouldn't record with Don. Rip on Lynch all you want, but the whole band didn't like you Don
It was said when George, Jeff and Mick would rehearse it would be heavy as hell but when Don would come in it was a totally different band and they hated it.
I heard back in the day that Don insisted that the band wear these glamorous outfits like on the album cover for Under Lock And Key. George hated dressing up like that and i don't blame him cause they weren't glam !
Saw that tour with Dio, and the following one they opened for Triumph. They were actually really good live, regardless of any friction there may have been. That Dio tour through...terrible Dio mix/sound. Sound engineer put way too much delay in the guitar and Dio's vocals and there was this terrible mush of double hits on everything that made discerning something almost impossible. Luckily the Dokken mix wasn't nearly as bad.
*I always see George hanging out with Jeff or Mick, while Don is always by himself, yet we are supposed to believe George is the problem. Sure, cuz lead singers/frontmen are always so humble and easy to get along with (sarcasm.)*
There has to be someone who makes the hard decisions. The guy who drives the band. At that age, kids don't like to be told what to do. It's all rock n roll and party all night.
Being alone doesnt necessarily make you an asshole.don has always been a private guy. Maybe he was abit of a prick? But i doubt the other 3 were saints. If you had to be around someone you werent fond of all the time you too would need a break. Jon levin has been in dokken almost 20 years and its typically george wanting to do reunion shows. Probably because those 500 short lived projects he keeps starting up dont last.
George was a bitchin guitarist however his head space ruined him. He came off as an epic asshole. It's sad because I don't think they could have put another guitarist in Dokken and it would have been the same. George let his ego and drugs run him which ruined Dokken's chance to have major success. I wish it had been differently because Dokken was EPIC AS FUCK! I would have liked to have seen them get major success. I had all of their albums but my ex destroyed them because I treasured them....I am replacing them so I will have them all once again. Still love Dokken.
I saw Dokken on Van Halen's Monster's of Rock in 88 in Ohio they was in the wrong spot because after Metallica played then Dokken came out and played they couldn't stand up to Metallica
When you are as good as they are, it's hard not to want to set your own goals, and not compromise. Yngwie didn't (but his music now sucks) and George is still advancing his art.
@@stratrat57 Well that is a matter of opinion now isn't it? Some might favor Yngwie over George or vice versa.... but art is being advanced in both camps now isn't it? Yes. It is. Rhetorical. Look up Rhetorical if need be.
@4:23 George and Jeff should sue this ego maniac. Lies! Lies! This guy has a sick ego. George and Jeff wrote all the music for that album. All the music. This guy profited from George's talent from day 1 and then he pulled the rug below the band's feet after BFTA album. Ripped them off. Oh! And suddenly, from your lackluster breaking the chains songwriting talent you went to the awesome tooth and nail songwriting uh? Yeah Right! And Paris is burning is not your song Don.! You stole it from The Boyz.
Sorry, Don's broken hearted musical approach didn't deserve Georges' talent IMHO .... we see who is still playing and who's whining... Lynch Mob is still kickin' and Don's doing nothing.in 2020/2021.. Jeff is playing with the remnants of Foreigner. don't know where Mick is ....ummm was playing for the End Machine 2019 ... another Don won't play with ... a leopard can't change it's spots, not a real big fan of Don he did great on the title track and "Heaven comes down" i'm sure the rest was clingingly dedicated for that girl that got away..... seems like the issue was Don and his huge ego got in the way and he once again can't buy a band ...Glen Hughes is still belting it out at 69 years of age in Dead Daisey's Holy Ground with Doug Aldridge and Deen Costonavo my two cents
You do realize that the full Dokken lineup has done several tours, one in Japan, the other in the states over the last couple years, right. Would’ve done more if not for Dons arm/hand being paralyzed after surgery.
