Dolby Atmos on HomePods on Apple TV - Everything you need to know! 

Legit the only creator that makes useful content on the homepods. Thank you bro. Earlier this year I went from renting a room in an apartment to a house. I originally used the home pods in stereo mode to play music an occasional use them for my TV. Once I moved I didn’t really have anything for my living room speaker setup so I till used my homepods. Kind of left lackluster. Once this update came out my homepods transformed from honestly a weak home theater sound to a completely immersive experience. 10/10 would recommend

Hi Erfon, I really like watching your videos - it´s simply entertaining! I also have 2 HomePods (with Dolby Atmos) and a 5.1 surround sound set which costs around $6k. Of course, the surround system sounds better. HOWEVER, I agree with you - it is unbelievable what the 2 HomePods are capable of! AND you have several advantages with the HomePod compared to a conventional sound system: no cables, minimalistic design, Siri integration, Homekit integration, etc. I also figured out a way to connect a SUBWOOFER to the HomePods! Just use an old Airport Express with 3.5mm out and connect it to a Subwoofer. Then select the HomePods & the Subwoofer as the output sound devices! It works.

hey, you can use a homepod with a sound bar! I do, it sounds really good too, you have to select both the Apple TV (connected to my sounder / subwoofer) and the HomePod via the right hand button (press & hold) on the apple remote. You'll see the airplay button, there you can choose which audio options to airplay too. There is a feature in audio settings where you use your iPhone to sync the sound. Works well with Apple Music etc. some apps don't for some reason though.

I think it should be 6 feet apart because the HomePods are social distancing.

I think you need a bigger microphone

After watching your Atmos video, I went ahead and bought another homepod and now using them as stereo with my apple tv 4k. Absolutely love the sound stage. Might not replace the actual Atmos setup with a gazillion speakers but hey for the price, this is the best experience! 🙌

I totally get how you’re still using the old TV with “just” 1080p. I’ve only recently set up a 27” monitor as my TV (of course not too far from my couch) and started using my single HomePod as the TV speaker, connected to an early gen Apple TV. My conclusion: good sound, on the right volume, makes such a HUGE difference, more so than the size of the screen or picture quality (to a certain extent). Tbh, with this setup, the one HomePod does the job just fine.

I just made some speaker stands for my homepods to lift them to ear level and also put them 6 feet apart. Wow what a difference it made. Amazing sound quality enhanced even further for me.

I wasn’t prepared for the bass on the HomePods. Wow. You can feel it.

Got two home pods to try this with my 4K OLED and they sounded amazing but couldn’t get the sound in sync with the picture. It was close. 3 frames out. I verified it by filming the screen with my regular TV speakers and then the HomePods and comparing the videos and wave forms in FInal Cut. They sounded wonderful and would have loved to have kept them but bad lip sync drives me crazy. (I spent a week trying to get them working including trying the built in wireless sync on ATV in all 15 different 4K modes but still no luck. I’m sure most people wouldn’t notice as it’s close enough but working in video it drives me crazy. I could get it close but not exactly right. Shame.

I have a Homepod with apple 4k TV. You say you can use an old TV however I do not have the option of Dolby Atmos in the audio /video settings. How were you able to set up Dolby Atmos on an older TV? When I called Apple Support they said I need a Dolby Atmos Reciever and or TV with Dolby Atmos Passthrough.

When I set my homepods to be my default speaker of Apple TV I get stuck and can’t ask Siri to play my favorite’s mix on Apple Music. Doesn’t happen to you? I had to deactivate that function, select as TV speaker and when I’m done watching I have to return to TV speaker in order for them to keep working.

So this only works with Apple TV content? What if I have another box or a smart TVs does the sound still come out with Dolby Arnos?

Thank you so much for this Erfon - new subscriber here! I have been searching for info about the homepods with the Apple TV 4K. When I was in high school (in the 90’s), I worked in the Sears Electronics & Computer department. I hooked up surround sound systems (with many wires, lol), and that’s also when they had the surround sound testing “rooms” - ha. Wow, how times have changed. Now we can have decent sound coming from wireless smart speakers. Love it. Thanks for this review - and for all of your Homepod content! 🙂

With HomePod Mini you can NOT make them the default sound for your TV like you are able to do with the original HomePod. You can select them as an AirPlay source but you are subject to the Apple TV forgetting the connection every time you turn it on.

Efron, coudl you do a tutorial for the set up of the Dolby Atmos with 2 OG homepods, I've got 2 of them and they don't seem to be outputting as Dolby Atmos.

So you have a pioneer Elite plasma TV? it has excellent picture quality but I doubt it support 4K.

Is is still Dolby Atmos if I have 2 Homepods + Bose Portable Home Speaker all connected together to my Apple TV 4K (2nd gen)?

I am searching for a review of the effect of placing them in front of you (say either side of a TV) vs beside you (as in sofa side tables). I am hoping with the audio analysis it does that the effect will be just as good, but don't want to buy until I can figure it out. Thoughts?

Love it Efron! I had 2 Kuros and 2 Elite 7.1 receivers that I ultimately replaced with a Samsung q90r tv & soundbar. BUT, my wife hated all the speakers and townhome neighbours complained about subwoofer. So, I got rid of all the speakers and bought 2 HomePods, v1 and a new AppleTV 4K (2022) and am not looking back. Love the sound, wife loves the lack of ugly speakers, and neighbours haven’t made a peep! The air is full of sound, especially the low end bass but never boomy. I also haven’t ever felt the need to raise the volume on music or tv past half way either. Keep up the good work and rock in with your Kuro Elite!!!

One big issue I had/have with the dual HomePods is the distance between the HomePods and the AppleTV 4K. My setup was I had my AppleTV 4K in the basement in a media rack, ~25ft away. I have a high end HDMI 4K/data cable and this works fine, BUT when I got the HomePods, the distance between the devices would cause audio sync issues between the picture and the sound track. I moved the AppleTV back up to the TV and velcro to the back of the TV and now have zero issues with audio sync. This isn’t called out anywhere. I have a really high end wireless system and wired network at my house but for ??? Reason there is some kind of wireless communication between these devices that apparently can’t be that far away from the AppleTV 4k to make everything work like magic.

Hi , Is the Disney Dolby atmos in apple Tv quality good? i have 2 homepod paired with Apple 4k TV and both homepod in front of TV 4feet wide,.But i don't get the Dolby atmos effect. Overall speaker quality is good but Dolby atmos feature is not working in my setup.Whats the minimum broadband speed required to enjoy dolby atmos.?

Subscriber for a while but just set up my 2 home pods and connect them On my apple tv 4k and my old tv.Just wondering how come only one homepod is giving out sound even though both are paired already. Anybody can help? Playing music is fine, both homepods are emitting sounds

Actually you can use the Homepods with another sound system or a subwoofer if you have an Airport Express 2nd generation. It works perfectly in sync and it’s mind blowing. You can buy it really cheap. Actually that’s a great idea for a next video ;)

The content on that tv still looks great. Still looks better then most 4K TVs today.

I think, through Airplay 2, you can play the sound on the stereo paired HomePods as well as other Airplay2 speakers simultaneously, correct?

Hi. I’ve set this up but don’t seem to be getting Atmos sound. The sound just feels louder and I have no Atmos selection in Audio Mode. I just have 5.1 or stereo. Am I doing something wrong

I'll provide some honest feedback on this as I setup this exact thing this last week. Let me preface by saying I'm "in the Apple EcoSystem" and predominately use apple products in my home. Having said that, initial setup was quite simple, with the Home app with a little help from apple online support "Holding HomePod" etc. to create stereo I was finally able to pair them as a stereo pair. In the end, I found this $600 setup inferior to my $400 current sound bar. I also found that audio syncing was a slight issue with certain Apple TV apps like "Twitch" and "Prime", although RU-vid TV and Netflix behaved perfectly. Dolby Atmos "simulation" however didn't sound any different. Maybe it was my room size or layout or something but I think this requires a true receiver with separate channels. These HomePods are going back, sound bar back in place. :)

Does the HDMI standard allow audio to go downstream? Could I pass audio from my switch through my tv, to the Apple TV 4K to the Homepods? Because I would buy one more HomePod in a heartbeat! otherwise I have to get a new AV receiver soon like I was planning before this.

What a great video! I just purchased a second HomePod for my television a week ago and had all these exact same questions! You saved me the rigmarole of trying to figure out if I could use an airport express to add a subwoofer. Regarding speaker placement...maybe I’m doing it wrong but I tried them next to my television and I tried putting the right one 45 degrees forward on the right side of the room....kind of a bit of a diagonal setup around 10 feet apart...I have one large recliner closer to the tv and a couch in the back of the room...medium size room...it seems to fill the room more evenly with this setup with the front to back so it sounds more even whether you’re sitting in the chair or on the couch. May do further experimentation. Haven’t tried a Dolby Atmos video yet. Will try that next.

Yours has been one of the more helpful reviews about the HomePod’s. A bit stretched out but not as bad as some of the other videos others have posted. (Do I really need to hear about their previous or future setups? No.) I don’t care about automation. I mean ... do I really want my shades to open when I walk into the room? Not really. Especially if I have a migraine. You kept it simple. Now my decision is going to come down to the immersion and ability to place sound behind me. Not for surround. Mostly so I don’t piss my neighbors off. I think that’s the challenge with Atmos. Is it always so loud? If so then I can’t. Not just for the neighbors but I literally cannot handle loud. Which .... is Atmos always loud? Completely forgot. That is the one thing that is excruciating at theaters. The Atmos is so loud that it hurts. It’s been a while since I’ve been in a theater obviously (pandemic) but I remember now. Atmos was always so loud. 110+ Db. I also have hyperacusis. Which sucks. Not as cool as it seems with Daredevil. Maybe I’ll just just get two minis and try them in stereo. You said it’s still immersive right? Not so loud but still crisp?

How would you compare the Dolby Atmos with Echo Studio with this?

for the dolby atmos sound to work you need a 4k tv with dolby atmos support ??? the tv you use in the video is 4k with dolby atmos support ?? Surround sound doesn't work for me .... I am thinking about purchasing two for atmos effect. Would you please try how it sounds if 1 is placed next to tv and another HomePod is placed towards the back of the room near seating area, across the room. Does it make it more immersive or do they communicate with each other making it more surround and atmos ?

For the person who asked if you could use HomePods with other speakers: Yes you can. I do it all the time. I have a home theater system and 2 HomePods. You can access a menu and enable the HomePods as well as your current speaker setup. There are hiccups sometimes, they have to sync together. So, you would enable HomePods to play with your other speakers, find something to watch, hit play and if there is a syncing issue, just pause it then play it again.

Hi Erton 👋 I got my new HomePods today and set them up. But neither the Dolby Atmos nor Dolby Vision is showing up in the settings. The best picture setting I can get is 4K HDR & best audio is Dolby Digital 5.1. The support I did get from Apple is saying that my TV isn’t HDR 10 capable and that I also need a HDMI 2.0a cable. But even if the TV isn’t capable of pushing DolbyVision content in a video. Shouldn’t the speakers be playing Dolby Atmos as they are connected directly to the Apple TV wirelessly? I also thought that I saw a video from someone that said because the image signal is coming from Apple TV that it doesn’t matter if the TV set supports Dolby Vision it would still play the signal. Is this correct or no? You have an older TV, how are you getting Dolby Atmos & Dolby Vision being interconnected with this older TV? I’ve had almost no help from Apple and want to get this setup right. Any help you can provide would be great. Thank you 🙏

I had a real issue with Apple support. Have two HomePods and TV 4K. It doesn’t show Atmos as an option but think it’s now there. I’s there a way of knowing if Atmos is on? Three HomePod minis arrived today so looking forward to the review. So far sounding good here.

Yo, Erfon. Great content as usual, good to have you back. Missed you. FYI, you can add a subwoofer plugged into an AirPort Express to a HomePod pair. Can confirm; sounds GOOD. Nice extra layer of sound. You can also set all three as the default output on tv 4k (via airplay settings) Peace ✌🏼

I combine my hompods by AirPlay with Harman Kardon Citation Bar and surround speakers. Amazing sound. I’m not sure what is better. Separately or together, when I hear it I think that last.

I have Sonos play bar with play 1 surrounds. 2x HomePod sound better... but they look odd wall mounted! Amazing sound!!!! Oh, they only work for Apple TV content so no PlayStation sound etc
