One thing to add about the Student Teacher Barbie from an actual teacher; in order to graduate with your teaching degree you need to student teach for one, sometimes two, semesters. Student Teacher is not the 'end goal' and it's not something to look down upon. It's a person who is learning to be a teacher. Basically, that Barbie was in college.

@@lunarose9 I think it's just that it's always against math. Ngl, I think the fact that math is constantly brought up as "the hardest subject" really can cause like an internal aversion against it. Like I am sure it does influence how you approach it. Math was a little hard for me, because I had a bad teacher, but once I understood it from my dad, I liked it a little better. I feel like if maths weren't always chosen to be portrayed as so hard for everyone, I might have been a bit more optimistic about it. I still to this day say I suck at maths, and I do, because it wasn't taught to me well and I kinda just gave up because I didn't expect anything better. But of course, I would really benefit from it now ^^ anyway, point is, not the worst thing ever, but maybe it would help to not always portray maths as something that drags kids down ^^
@rebeccula1899
@rebeccula1899 Год назад
Math can absolutely be a difficult subject for a lot of people, but one of the most valuable lessons I ever learned in my college math classes was the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. A fixed mindset assumes that I am either good at something, or I am not. A growth mindset assumes that I may struggle with something now, but I am capable of improving with effort and practice. Difficult subjects are often presented with a fixed mindset, when we really just need to understand that some students need more time with the material, or just a different approach to it entirely.

I had pregnant Midge and she was my favourite doll (until I got Bratz, but as far as Barbies go, Midge was my OG fave). Idk why people are trying to smear her as horrifying and weird, the magnetic belly is genius since, if you don't want to play with the baby, it pops right off and she's just a normal doll. It's the least offensive way to tackle something as normal as pregnancy and considering kids don't grow up in a vacuum where younger kids/babies and pregnant people don't exist, there's really no reason to act as if pregnancy is taboo and kids don't understand it. Plenty of kids discover "babies come from mummy's tummy" ... the doll isn't dispensing any kind of forbidden knowledge and it's not as if kids have to understand the process of a vaginal birth to play with the doll.

I think the weirdest part of the article, for me, was that the writer seemed completely clueless to the fact that people other than kids might enjoy dolls, but also kind of disregarded the fact that the dolls are primarily aimed at kids. Like, is 'babysitter' a bit of an oddity next to a doctor or a vet? In a vacuum, maybe. But it's not weird at all when you consider that the target audience for that babysitter doll was 9-year-old girls, and odds are pretty good their first job in five-ish years WOULD BE BABYSITTING.
@otakusurnaturelle4501
@otakusurnaturelle4501 Год назад
Heck, for much that they have little siblings or younger neighbours, little girls with barbies could already be babysitters. Where I'm from, you can officially be a certified babysitter at 10, so a 9 y/o ? Having a babysitter Barbie is like, one of the most logical thing.
@hollyro4665
@hollyro4665 Год назад
There’s something really questionable about the fact the the writer doesn’t like Barbie saying happy birthday to her boyfriend, thinks it’s weird she owns a kitchen, and thinks babysitting is too low of a career for Barbie. Plus the babysitter sets aren’t bought by kids that want to be babysitters. They’re bought by kids that like playing with baby characters like a baby doll.

Current pregnant teacher here. I think a doll like this would be great for explaining to my very young students what is happening. Pregnancy is part of life. Not sure why some people keep treating it like an adult subject when children are exposed to it on a regular basis. It gives just enough information to the children IMO. Where is baby? Midge's stomach. Where does baby come out? Midge's stomach. How did baby get there? That's not important... But Barbie is there to help.
@grandmasgopnik9642
@grandmasgopnik9642 Год назад
Pregnancy always made me uncomfortable as a child which is strange as sex was a known factor to me as a child so I knew how they were made I was scared about a child existing in there and having to come out of a woman\pain and complications associated with it. I associated it with the alien/aliens movies I saw as a young child. My mom was medical so I read her txt books and had it explained to me young. I think a toy that demystifies and maybe discusses the more fun parts of pregnancy and infants would be good for children like me. I remember asking how the baby doesn’t drown in there or get squished. How the mom recovers after bleeding so much or can spare nutrients for such a large parasite without dying. I was so excited for my cousins but I was like they do be tapeworms lol 😂

Honestly as a young child I had this illustrated book called "Where do babies come from" that although in simplified terms, explained puberty, pregnancy and lactation very well. It even covered conception in very child friendly language like "when a man and a woman love each other very much, they kiss and hug with their clothes off. The man then puts his penis in the woman's vagina until sperm (covered in the previous pages) comes out.". I must've been around 6 or 7 when I read that and it was so educational, sensible and demystified pregnancy and puberty for me. Learning how procreation happens I think is important too for kids, tho obviously with age appropriate language like the book did.

My friend who I played dolls with as a kid had the pregnant Midge. I had just learnt what pregnancy was when she got it (from a text book with realistic pictures), and the idea of pregnancy freaked me out, but playing with the doll and including her in the playing/roleplaying made it seem a lot more normal. Not "I want to run out and get pregnant asap!!!" normal like articles always made it seem, just "well I guess it is something that happens in life so no need to be weirded out by it" normal. I’m disabled so I wanna speak about my personal experience with Becky and the more recent disabled dolls! For a little bit of backstory I have a collagen disorder which affects literally everything in your body since collagen literally helps make up everything in your body. But for me it’s mainly the bones, organs, muscles, and necessary nerves. I’m 22 and have had 18 extensive orthopedic surgeries and I’ve broken a bone over 300+ times. When I was younger I was determined to walk because my father who gave me the condition didn’t and I wanted to be different. So I used a walker and the occasional rental wheelchair when I had a broken bone for 11 years of my life. When I got to middle school I took a hard look at myself and made the decision that I would have more freedom and be able to keep up with my peers and friends better if I started using a wheelchair. I’ve been in one ever since and it’s definitely the best decision I’ve ever made even now as a 22 year old. But anyways back to Barbie’s! My mother had me later in life. So I was around 9-10 years old when I was helping her sort through all her Barbie’s she had collected over the years. She pulled out the original first ever Becky and immediately showed me! I squealed so loud! I was so excited that a Barbie was using a wheelchair. Thankfully my mother had two of the original Becky so I was given and able to open and play with one of them. It made me so happy. From then I distinctly looked for Barbie’s with disabilities or who used wheelchairs. I was 18-19 when Barbie started becoming more inclusive and making dolls with wheelchairs or hearing aids a normal thing. During the first months of the pandemic I couldn’t even go outside unmasked. Since I’m severely imuno-compromised. My mother had found one of the newer Barbie’s in a wheelchair on Amazon. She knew I needed something to cheer me up so she ordered it. She snuck in my room while I was showering before a zoom class one day and put her box on my bed. I was so happy. It was like I was 9-10 years old again seeing Becky for the first time. In early 2021 I was playing Barbie’s with my cousins kid who I call my “niece” since I’m an only child. I brought over the newest wheelchair barbie and she didn’t fit into my nieces dream house at all! It was frustrating because I was like we finally got more disabled representation but they didn’t even think the big accessories through! So when I found out a couple months ago that the dream houses and play sets are accessible it definitely makes me hopeful that Barbie is listening and taking notes from the disabled community to create a more inclusive brand.

I also inherited a collagen issue from my dad, but I'm still getting it diagnosed, likely some form of EDS. Most of my issues are with bones not staying in place, and when something happens to me, it takes much longer to heal (it took months to heal from wisdom tooth extraction instead of the usually few weeks, but I needed that done). I personally don't have any mobility aids as such (I wear compression socks for support and circulation, but they're not obvious most of the time), but when I was in high school, I remember classmates who went to the school specifically because the high school classrooms were all on one level with no stairs needed. Crutches, canes, and wheelchairs weren't that uncommon. It was nice to see some representation through dolls, toys, and other things that people are diverse and don't all have the same abilities. I will say that the older playsets not being compatible is a more accurate representation of real life, as so many buildings and institutions aren't accessible or friendly to those with various conditions that need a bit more help. I for one need to sit down a lot more than others. I get dizzy if I stand for too long, and when the pandemic prompted open areas to remove or block seating, I suffered. I had to sit on the floor full of dirt, or walk even farther to nearly collapse on a park bench. It is nice to see changes, and hopefully things will improve for humans as well as dolls.

@@joylox Oh wow! I would recommend possibly looking into hyper mobile elher Danlos syndrome! It sounds like your symptoms are a lot like that! Yeah the old dolls definitely do show the accuracy of not everything following the ADA. Since the ADA wasn’t signed into law until 1990. And even now it’s super easy to be declared “historic building” so they don’t have to follow the accommodations they need to legally have per the ada.

I love all these "hot takes" that are just "Yeah well Barbie may be a genius scientist, astronaut, famous musician, presidential candidate, and computer scientist, BUT she also owns and uses a dishwasher! She is setting feminism back 500 years!" I actually really like that Barbie has playsets that are more "everyday" than just all her careers. Kids, after all, often want to reenact everyday situations in play, which includes chores, babysitting and all that.

Women are criticized for breathing. It’s kind of subjective to the individual. A woman not interested in marriage or children is criticized for being “selfish” and told they’ll regret it later. A woman staying home with her family isn’t “a productive member of society” and will regret it later because they’re not building a career. Wherever you fall there’s criticism unless you somehow manage to show the world how impressively perfect you are at walking the line between the two. That’s a waste of energy so just do what makes you happiest ladies 💕

I've been a Barbie aficionado for around 42 years now, ever since I was 4 years old. Even when I became an adult I followed the news on all things Barbie. I was 21 years old when the Oreo Barbie was released and I remember there being a little bit of buzz about the name and how it was a derogatory slur toward us black women. But I swear I've heard and read way more angry think pieces about it in the last few years then I ever heard then. Yea some people were upset but I remember even then it was people being upset on our behalf as a opposed to actual black women being upset. Some were but it's more modern people looking back and getting upset instead of people from back then.

I was also 21 when Oreo Barbie was released. I was heavily into collecting Barbies at that time, and I do not recall Oreo Barbie being an issue. Once everyone saw the dolls and that they were advertising Oreo cookies, it seemed like no one cared. At that time, there were a lot of advertisement-type dolls: Little Debbie Barbie, Disney World Barbie, Kool-Aid Barbie -- so when you put that in context, there being an Oreo Barbie didn't seem strange. Now looking back at the name by herself, it does seem bizarre that they would choose to pair up with Oreo and make an African American doll.

My child mind never went to those places that this article infers. Like I would have loved to have that washer set for my doll so my doll wasn’t stuck with using her sink to do the cleaning! Also Barbie is just getting her chores done on her one day off from her 400 jobs- give her a break! (Also one could argue getting out of bed and doing the dishes or laundry is a big accomplishment in itself some days) I suppose that’s what happens when “grown ups” have a fictional woman figure that can’t talk back.

Maybe you're aware, (and I'm on ambien so please don't take any of my comments seriously - and I might comment a few times sry), but I think the phrase "'Happy birthday, Ken' Barbie" could be read as one of those situations where a lover presents themselves as a birthday gift, implying that the birthday boy/girl/other will be able to do whatever they want with the lover's body. Like, sticking a bow on yourself and saying "I'm your present this year." Also one small part of the reason for the infamous Folger's commercial. I think the way that barbie's dress matches the wrapped present, with the same bow on her waist, could unintentionally evoke that image in adults - although that is on the adults with dirty minds, not the doll, lol.

I had the Barbie and Tanner set as a kid and at the time I found the “poop” feature to be kind of funny but not especially strange or gross. It added to the roleplay of taking care of a “real pet”. I feel like adults overthink these things too much and don’t give kid’s enough credit. If anything the biggest problem with the set is that the little metal pellets would often scatter and were easy to lose

Thank you for this. I am admin in doll FB group and I get so angry when people share articles like that in the group and don't understand why it is a problem!

I was honestly hoping this would be a list of actually weird concepts Barbie did.

I have the George Washington Barbie and she's one of my favorites! Barbie doing male drag - completely unique in Barbie history. I got her in DuPont Circle on my first visit to Washington DC, so she's also an awesome and very appropriate souvenir!

I had the iconic wide capri Barbie and Tanner set and loved it as a kid! Looking back it did make me laugh that the ‘leavings’ became food again but I definitely wasn’t as horrified as the article makes out lmaooo

Miss Mojo just made a video about the most "unhinged barbies", using a majority of the dolls on this list, down to the Tippi Hedren Birds doll. Good to know the content farms are keeping it as fresh and original as ever.

I haven't been into Barbies for many years, but those Space Goddess Barbies are spectacular and I kind of want one to have on display with all my other art 😻

I actually had the remake of the tattoo barbie in the 90s (Or what i'm assuming is a remake. They did have one in the 90s), and i also wanted the dog pooping barbie thing, as well as several other of those weird pooping....You know, the 1990s had a weird fascination with animal toys and bodily waste. They even had some dolls that would pee in diapers i think, it was...I think you unlocked a memory i had blocked out... As a black chick in her 30s, I personally dont find anything wrong with the oreo barbie, as you said they made a white one as well. I think that they probably should have maybe done some other cookie promotions. Oreo is a very popular cookie, and I can see why they would have chosen that over Nutter Butter lol. Now, if they came out with an animal line barbie, and had the black barbie as a raccoon, THAT, would be an issue lol (however, as someone that's been addressed in that way before, i would actually, with very little guilt, buy it)

You're probably thinking of the 90's baby born which could both poop and pee. I've hear it could get disgusting if it wasn't cleaned properly.

I have to say, I've been in love with that Raider set for a little while now. The Haunted Beauty dolls look super cool as well.

Those sci-fi royalty dolls and Haunted Beauty line are just excellent, up there with the Bob Mackie editions like Queen of Hearts and Golden Legacy. I love how the Tippi Hedren Barbie still has to look pretty, so instead of frightened over being attacked by birds, she just looks inconvenienced. If only others had been released in the same theme though, like other characters in thrillers or horror. Barbie Bride of Frankenstein? Barbie Leave Her to Heaven? Yes, please!

I can imagine tho If your child is confused and scared about getting boobs or mom being pregnant or doesnt know about how to care for a pet and what comes with it (poop for example) All of these would be great gifts to normalize these heavier topics by having a Barbie of it that a kid could feel more comfortable with Makes things less scary!

I'll bet pregnant Midge and tra- mp stamp Barbie are on here. Edit: lol yup I was right. Btw I would've loved the George Washington Barbie as a kid. I was such a tomboy and dressed my dolls in GI Joe clothes all the time, so getting a doll wearing a fancy pirate captain costume would have made my day (I know I know it's not a pirate costume, but if I were still a kid that would've been 100% what I'd think)

We had the Happy Family Midge growing up because my mom was a midwife/RN and loved to get us that kind of stuff. I loved taking the baby out and trying to fut shoes or clothes in there, plus the magnetic belly slid to fit over the doll and was super fun to fidget with. My mom raised some really weird and dark daughters and we loved the weirdness of that doll. 😂❤
