Barbie dolls with bangs make me feel pretty good about the good old days, when my mom thought little me would look cute with bangs that start from to top of your head and continue to behind ears. I hope you all can imagine it. Quite epic.
The OG dolls being sold in swimsuits was a marketing ploy. Pay for the dolls once, but for further playability (and more sales) you had to buy the outfits. So, in a swimsuit they were basically in their undies - a thing that couldn't actually be done in the 60s - and that made them a blank slate. From that day forward Barbie could be anything you want her to be. I have very mixed feelings on the newer dolls. In the 60s-90s any adult-bodies Barbie could wear any of the fashions going all the way back to the beginning. So a Barbie and the Rockers doll would fit Solo in the Spotlight just fine because the mold of her body didn't fundamentally change. That means they could pump money into the fashions and accessories - becausejust about everyone had a doll that would fit anything. Now, however, you have petite, tall, curvy, and standard - and none of them can even wear each other's shoes. This has created a problem. How many "curvy" dresses should they sell? How about petit or tall? It's a guessing game. I'm betting that part of the reason the quality in fashions has gone down is because the different body types have made it difficult to affordably make high-quality fashions in any kind of quantity. Everyone is going crazy over Defa Lucy - but she only comes in one body type. Am I saying they should get rid of their diversity? No, I'm not saying that at all. Representation is important. What I am saying is I think this diversity has caused a domino effect of issues, and they are looking to get through it as cheaply as possible. I'll stick to my vintage Barbies and live vicariously through you for the more contemporary ones :)

I love the Barbie Looks line of dolls. Even this past one with the crazy color block outfits. I like that they are giving us the same faces with different hair and skin tones. I'd love for them to do a bit more with the Ken dolls. It'd be so awesome if they could do rooted facial hair. I want a ken with a rooted mustach or beard. Give us a bald ken too! I think this pastel line is going to be crazy popular once people can see the actual dolls, especially the "Daphne" looking one. I'm a huge fan, love all your videos. For Italy I would've given Barbie a little espresso stand. Where you could have her stand at the bar and enjoy her afternoon espresso and have some biscotti. Even just a few guide maps for all of the historical sites would've been nice. I don't think of pizza when I think of Italy tbh. I think of New York or Chicago. Italy is wine, Olive oil, espresso, homemade treats made by women with sixty years experience, large family dinners, historic tours. Things like this.
Great doll chat, Arjen! I just turned 60, same age as Skipper! I’ve always loved her the most. The vintage fashion you mentioned of hers with the pink skirt, sweater, and white knee socks is called School Days. The Barbie fashion that matches it is Knitting Pretty. I think I loved Skipper when I was growing up, because her fashions were all very similar to the clothes I wore as a kid. And I had long blonde hair with bangs just like her. By the time I got my first Skipper, the earlier editions were second hand and hand me downs, but I remember my older sister had one. My first Skipper wasn’t until 1968 or 69. A sausage curl Skipper. 🥰 As for the next wave of Looks dolls, I am sooo excited for them all! I love the pastel theme. I’ve read some people saying they don’t care for the curvy girl’s screening, but I think it’s so pretty. I also think it’s the Simone mold? I’m most excited for the blonde Lina though. I have all the other Looks dolls. Every time I assess my collection for purging, none of them find their way into the “find a new home” bin, lol. ☺️💖
They look amazing. I really want Lina and the red headed one. I also read there would be a lot of interesting stuff this year like The Beatles Yellow Submarine Barbie and the Holiday Barbie all in Tartan. Also btw Arjen have you tried using a mail forwarding system? It’s superb for the store that don’t ship outside the US, also gives you a huge opportunity to hunt for dolls on second hand market easily.

$50 for the career of the year set is just criminal but so was the price of the movie dolls. I really hope with all the Defa Lucy hype, the Minibrands Fashions BLOWING UP, the sneakers by Zuru looking so so good, that Mattel start to have a good rethink about where they have been going wrong for a long time… The quality of clothing has been lax, I don’t understand why we pay SO much more for MTM and even Fashionistas retail for around £15 in the UK so they are making mistakes left right and centre. Come on Mattel, I love me some Ken and we need fashion packs that are FUN but also well made, and there is clearly a lot of love for him since the movie. I love the looks dolls, I just wish they were available in Canada stores, as I live outskirts if Winnipeg Manitoba Canada and these new dolls that come out are never in stores. The looks dolls, ariel the little mermaid sisters set, the BMR 1959 dolls, new mermaid dolls, not seen in any store in Winnipeg where I do most my shopping. Basicllay I have to go online and pay scalper prices asd you said fashionistas are like $8 there, here they are $12-$17, and $35 for the mtm wheelchair dolls. I was born in the 80's and the Skipper I know was always blonde and her bestie was a Brunette named Courtney, and they had a AA Skipper. Skipper also had a boyfriend named Kevin. In later years where Skipper grew up to teen Skipper AA skipper got a name Nikki, which was later used to replace Barbie's friend Christie.

I’m in Victoria, BC, and very little is available in stores here either. For some reason they only get some of the Fashionistas, and they usually aren’t the ones I like best. Walmart does charge $12 if they have it online, but their inventory is pretty spotty. I wouldn’t say Amazon charges scalper prices, but they are higher than the US because of the exchange rate (1.35x) and the shipping, both to Amazon and to the consumer. Shipping is never really “free”. I check Amazon daily for price drops because they do fluctuate. I ended up ordering the sisters set from US Amazon before Christmas because even with their extra shipping the sale was so good that it was still less than the sale in Canada. Nothing is as good as being able to pick out faces in the store, though.
Very excited, LOVE the redhead in purple, also really like the blonde doll in blue and the ken doll looks really good and also like his color combo outfit. The other outfits could have been a little bit more exciting. For me overal bit too much pink outfits, I would have loved maybe like a peach color added or a more light ice blue or pastel yellow. Also different types of fabric most outfits have just one type of fabric. I would have loved them to be more like the Versace inspiration from 90's which it is loosely referred to.

I love the blonde barbie looks ( I allways prefere "real" Barbie, I am basic). The good thing with the looks is that I am not fan of the Millie face. And this face is gorgeous. And I need to say, concerning the rollerblade set now and before: Ken had a fantastic glow up! Love modern ken!
After rewaching this video, I still think about maybe getting looks#24😆 Pink pasport is nice edition for kids education. And yes, we missed dolls of the world. But I have an unpopular opinion that instead of doing same countries over and over again, it would be nice to see other countries🙂 For me is sad that my country didn't got the doll🥲 Maybe I should make it myself😅 It is nice to hear that you like to read comments when you having a bad day, if you want I can occasionally leave a coment on every video you have😂 Most of the time I work from home and rewatchig RU-vid videos or anime which I already saw, so it won't get borring🤭

I sent an email to Mattel creations asking if I will receive my Allan doll (l’m in Canada Land) and Mattel answered me back, saying that it’s a mistake, and they will ship my order, that they do ship internationally, and they are working on resolving the matter. So, I think it may have something to do with the pre-order of Allan (I absolutely have no idea honestly). 😊
@@Barbination me neither, but the agent told me that our Allan is on pre-sale until march 8, then, we will have him ship. When, I don’t know, but I’m very patient, and I trust we will get news from him (Allan) very soon!
Usually there is one or two Barbie looks in a wave that I like a little less than the rest.This is the first Barbie looks wave where I want to get all of them equally!
To be fair I do agree we’ve gone down hill, but also I think some of that has to do with the fact that Barbie has kind of always reflected current fashion and unfortunately current fashion is just not as cute as it used to be. Everything is just about comfort. And yea I do love me some sweatpants but like clothes just aren’t it anymore. My biggest issue with the skate set is if they had the bed and snap knees then I’d actually consider getting these dolls but they’re just fashionistas with a higher price tag so nah!!!

And yes it is a choice because they don’t want to invest in the production cost. 3D printing and screen printing is WAY cost effective and the CEO’s want their paycheck to see the money… not the product. The sound of your voice breaks my heart when you asked this question because it is very sad. Barbie (just like the Disney company) have fallen from grace by disrespecting their clientele 😢

Also Mattel is trying to rebrand Barbie for a younger audience. Think 8yr olds and under. They’re focusing on Monster High right now 😭😭😭😭😭

Here I am! Italian here! 🇮🇹 🥲 I'm very disappointed with the Italian themed Barbie, the only Italian thing she has is the flag on the glass of coffee which in any case is an American style coffee cause in Italy coffee is typically espresso served in small cups. Perhaps the pizza can also be saved, although unlike the coffee it is too small.😅 I like the early 2000s themed dress but I don't understand what it has to do with Italy.🤔⁉️ I would have preferred a summer dress with little flowers or white with lace and a Vespa 🛵🥺 Or they could dress her with a striped t-shirt, black shorts and a straw hat to recall the clothing of the gondoliers of Venice if they really wanted to make it simple and without vehicles. As accessories, pizza and ice cream were fine, but made better than that. ☹️ In addition to all this, I would have also preferred a different doll from the typical blonde Millie, ok, in Italy we are also blonde, but a nice brunette girl with light eyes would have been more original, perhaps with a mold like that of the twist 'n turn fashionista
My preference is for curvy dolls or red haired dolls but I don’t love either in this Looks wave. I might instead go for the Ken, as I have very few, or the petite with the short hair since I don’t have any with short hair yet. I love the roller skating set! But I like the vintage version better! 😂
They're beautiful! I'm in Canada, ordered Allan on Feb 14th without any issues then saw shortly thereafter about Mattel's shipping. I'm extremely anxious waiting until Mattel gets their shipping fixed, I can't wait to receive Allan! Gah...now l am thinking of cancelling that pre order of the Lina face doll in the Barbie does Rebelde (RBD) upcoming release ...the Lina of that line isn't on a made to move body and this new Barbie Signature Lina is just as blonde...ahhh decisions... decisions🤣
Hello - We had the same issue with the Bill Blass Barbie in 1997. She was shown with a really high red-head coif. When the production model arrived, she came with a far flatter style. Please Mattel, again, be consistent. Thank you.
Love the new Looks dolls, I want them all. Also excited for the Netherlands Pink Passport doll, I love her outfit and her bike. I love the curvy movie star doll from the career of the year pack, too bad she's not sold separately. I'd never pay 50 bucks for that set.
I always loved the Barbies looks dolls, but this wave doesn't impress as much as the earlier releases. Although I do love the pastel colors. I love the Barbie bicycle set, I definitely want her. Career girls one are kinda blah, except for the one in the gown. And I think the reason Barbie and all the characters started in bathing suits like you said...is because it was just economical for them to make simple bathing suits, to see if the character sold well first, before they put money into clothing.
I’d like to get the Violet dimples film executive and of course the movie star in the pink dress but don’t want to buy the whole set just for those two.
I am excited for the Looks dolls - this is the first wave launch since I first got into Barbie collecting that I will be around for! I only have two looks dolls - Simone and Lina #19 and I have to say I really like the fashions and soft makeup colours in this wave.
Ohhh Girrrrl!!! I think the best Series of Barbie Looks is definitely coming!!!! Love the faces, love the hair styles, love the bodies and I ADORE the fashion pieces and Boxes!!! Truly excited about this one! - I wish Mattel decided to continue the Barbies of the World or even kens of the World in an updated manner. Im very happy you got a well deserved representation for the Netherlands haha Poor Italians that was so lame and hilarious XD, I think the Netherlands is by far the best to be honest so far for the pink pastport line and oh boy that question about whats going on with the standards and high quality level... A viwer recently commented on one of my videos as I particularly complaining or pointing out rather the differences between the Radiance Collection for the Disney princesses VS the Signature dolls from the 90s and he said oh fabric and plastic are so much more expensive now, but are they really? or is it just us looking to the other side because we dont want to confront reality haha I think thats a lame excuse too so its good we are critical, constructive of course, hoping that they listen and and somehow we can have Mattel as a reference again! Well it’s defenitely “a part” of the quality problem, material/fabric costs did rise but also the price of the products itself. Also the wages of people who work in the factories STILL, i think it’s a choice on mattel’s end… Ah well, still love Barbie haha 😆🩷 But love past Barbie even more 🩷
@@Barbination I fully agree and same here I still love Barbie but I as for now I love old Barbie much MUCH more and it isnt just nostalgia XD, although I can confirm that this problem the loss of quality is something all franchises we grew up with are facing, I know MGA its appreciated for the attention to detail, but I recently got into lil Bratz and oh boy, what I found has no comparisson whatsoever with the attention to detail even from MGA nowadays... That is, these dolls are SOOO small and still having great rooting, and accessories and fashion pieces? wow, ill share it all very soon (I hope ) but all the details are painted, all the 1 mm accessories are super well put together, the fasion pieces are all separate made of fabric, still working pockets, stitching detailing not printed at all which we cant see on the new Alwayz Bratz which are just produced and on a much bigger scale... So I feel theres been a decline just in general for all franchises whether thats more noticeable for Mattel or not. I want them all. ...but if I could make a critique (just a little one), is that none of the girls seems to have textured hair, but I think most of the girls on the past wave had it, so it's fine to me. I feel like this is the first time I REALLY like EVERY doll in collection! The last set with the overtly bold EVERY THING was a NO for me. I only got 2 of them, including Me Musclehead💗. But THESE!!!! Natural colouring on thefaces, great clothing styles, super cute shoes, for the most part.BUT THE COLOURS ARE WONDERFULNESS! Do you have ANY IDEA of release date? I REALLY don't want to be buying these secondary 🙄😡😳 People get REALLY gready....,

I indeed do think they hired a new artist because the facepaint looks different compared to the kind of dolls we've been getting these past few years, including Barbie LOOKS dolls.
