For decades, the US dollar has been king on the global stage. But more and more countries are looking to reduce their dependence on the American currency, saying they want to "de-dollarize" their economies. How realistic are their plans, and how would they work? Kate Moody talks to Ruchir Sharma, chairman of Rockefeller International and founder of Breakout Capital.

All this talk caused me to educate myself on currency better. It’s unlikely that another currency will replace the dollar soon since it is the most flexible and transparent. But the use of more currencies depending on which serve the best at times when the dollar or euro are too strong may become the norm.

Wait until there is the BRICS currency. This will be a central currency which does not belong to a country and overnight, it will see a lot of countries buying and moving away from the dollar immediately. As a person from the Global South: instead of thanking us for using dollars as trade/reserve currency, the US even sanctions us from time to time; worse, they print money to spend, resulting in pushing inflation elsewhere (out of America); worse worse, FED increases interest rate to solve America problem at the expense of others (the Global South has to increase their rate accordingly; if not, capital flies out of the country). High interest rate leads to slowing down the economy. The US has reasons to do that for their own economy; but the Global South has to take collateral damage with their own economies. It's totally a very unfair system.

None of the other government regardless of how well they administer their country has such ability. The dollar has and continues to work extremely well as the world's reserve currency. And a lot of countries got rich with the dollar as the world's reserve currency, especially those who are bellyaching the most about it now. This move off of the dollar has been precipitated by the fact that the US froze billionaire Russian oligarch assets. Nobody cared when the US put sanctions on Venezuela, Iran, Cuba, etc, but messing with billionaire money is serious. Not surprising that the Saudi Arabia billionaires are the ones squawking the loudest about how the US is now out of control about sanctions. Of course they are! These disgruntled billionaires need to tread lightly because if they actually succeed in getting a large swath of the world to de-dollarize, it will plunge the world into a global recession that will be impossible to get out of. The reason is that the dollar has worked exceptionally well in fueling globalization and whatever they try to replace it with won't - guaranteed.

@@SeeLasSee US public finances are heading towards a cliff. They are taking on unsustainable amounts of debt every year. You can easily check that. The only reason their sand castle does not collapse is because dollar is the reserve currency. When they are in trouble, the print more dollars. Which depreciates the dollar. Now in a high interest rate environment, that is coming back to haunt them. In addition, we are having a perfect storm: high inflation, negative growth, banking crisis and in Q3 and Q4 rising unemployment. Top it all off with truly endless political dysfunction. Dollar can only be the reserve currency if it is seen as reliable and we have faith. But the negatives are outweighing the positives. The truly terrible US financial policies mean repeating crisis which always lead EU down the cliff as well. Its time to cut the Americans loose.

Wealthy Chinese people know better... and keep it in the wardrobe....literally. (they also buy unusable property for some inexplicable reason) They would love to do what you do and put it in a "Western Bank" But they can't take it legally out of the country. That would have to change if China wants "reserve" status for the yuan. Do that and trillions of yuan would leave the country the next day... So don't be holding your breath there...
