I went to the dollar tree next to Joann fabrics and they had NONE. Went to another dollar tree next to a planet fitness and they had tons! Super money saver here!!!

I just did this two weeks ago with 4 of the clear cutting boards (in the kitchen section) from the Dollar Tree!! They come in a two pack, so it cost me $2 for the mats and $1 for the duct tape. It’s such a great idea!!

Oh wow love this! I have a fiskar rotary cutter I've found it doesn't work well on the plastic placemats. You need the self healing mat to get a good cut with the tool

Kelly I loved this idea!!! I went out and got mine right away. Thought I had duct tape but I was out. Masking tape worked but I knew it wouldn’t hold as well. Then I came across some contact paper. I covered the tape side with the contact paper and it’s a great surface for painting etc.

If you cut duct tape with scissors.....wipe them with a baby wipe before you cut the tape. That way you don't get glue on your scissors.

That is ridiculous. Unless you run the scissors along the sticky side of the tape, no residue will be left on the scissors.

Leigh Sutherland I have never cut duct tape and had clean scissors after. There is always stickiness along the cutting edge.

Hi, Thanks for the tip, I had no idea Dollar Tree was carrying cutting mats. I bought the extra large cutting mat at Michael's, used a 50% off coupon, and a senior citizen discount on top of that. The price wasn't that bad after that. I'm waiting on another big coupon to get the sharpener for the rotary blades. Thank you for your videos, I adore how up beat you are. ☺️ ✌️ 🖖 😷

Love! I think I'd splurge another $9. Get 18 total. Tape a set for solid, another for the measurements, & then glue them together, back to back.

Hi Angelina Mitchum, For that much money why not sign up for the emails from Michael's Craft store, and JoAnn's Fabric store? They send you coupons in the emails, just wait for a 50% off coupon. If you're a senior citizen, you ask for that discount too, and they put it on top of the coupon too. I have a separate Gmail account just for the store emails, it's faster to find them when you need them, and easier to ignore if you aren't going shopping. I got one of those giant cutting mats, and a rotary cutter with a 50% off coupon, and the senior discount. I'm waiting on another 50% off coupon to get the rotary blade sharpener next. Hope this helps. ☺️ ✌️ 🖖 😷

WOWWW!!! Was needing a large cutting mat for some projects I'm wanting to make, but, *didn't* want to spend $40 plus dollars for one!!! I *NEVER* thought of making something like this !!! THANK YOU KELLY for sharing this idea with us! Now, if I can only find the small squares of cutting mats. Only thing I'd do differently is I'd put the tape on the back of the mat so I'd have the guidelines of the front to help me "stay straight" while I'm cutting my fabrics. Thank you again.

Hi Yolanda Stephens, I'm in Orlando. Sign up for Michael's email to get the coupons, (use a separate Gmail account for store emails). Then wait for a 50% off coupon. If you're over 50/55 (I forget which it is) you can also get a senior citizen discount on top of the coupons. JoAnn's Fabric store does the same thing, sign up for the emails to get the coupons, and ask for the senior discount on top of it. That's how I got my giant cutting mat, and the rotary cutter too. Now I'm waiting for another big coupon for the blade sharpener for the rotary cutter blades. Hope this helps. ☺️ ✌️ 🖖 😷

I tape mats and other things together like this! Nice to know that I'm not weird! One suggestion that I do, use a rolling pin over the tape like a cement roller on pavement. Really helps me to ensure the tape is well stuck!

Oh my goodness Kelly! Thank you for this idea! I always wanted a larger mat to protect my huge desk and this worked out perfectly! I've been using mine for a full week now and cannot believe how durable it is. I'm constantly cutting on it with a razor and you can't even see any cut marks, paint wipes right off and glue easily peels off! So happy I have this. Thanks so much for the great idea! ...I cut the edges of the mats to make them all straight and it took forever so I don't recommend doing this, also I could never get them perfectly straight. (that's how durable they are!)

This is a great diy!! I have been wanting a cutting mat but didn't want to pay the price. I did buy one of these small ones from DT thinking I could do small projects on it. When I first seen them I only bought 2. I didn't know how many more I would need because I was looking to see what surface I was going to use. I did this, but only with 4(small work space). I taped it so I could fold it up to it’s 8x6 size to store it(no permanent work space) in a drawer. Wish I had space for yours...it looks so roomy compared to mine!❤️ it!

I have a big cutting board, and store it next to my washer with a flat card board container that I keep the long clear cutting rulers in. It’s great, I always know where everything is.

I also took Jennifer's advise and taped a sandwich for my gemini. Now I just have to put in the cardstock and die and the mat. Easier than trying to remember how the sandwich goes!

My sandwich is plate, plastic plate and magnetic plate taped together. I then add my die and cardstock and the mat plate and feed in.

I bought 4 a couple of months ago and taped them together. I do that with the clear cutting mats. I have done that with silicone mats to use for soldering. I usually use clear packing tape.

With the Dollar Tree cutting mats being 8" x 6" (the border on the mat makes it probably 9" x 7") you would have needed so many mats to make 6' x 4' you wouldn't have saved much $ to make one that large.

Handy tip: to remove those stubborn price stickers, warm them with a craft dryer or a blow dryer, then they peel off with ease!

The big mats are crazy expensive!! I got mine years ago with a coupon but it was still very expensive! Kelly, thanks for sharing all of your money saving craft ideas. This is a brilliant! This is the an item that would be worth getting a box of. I'm thinking like you Kelly, 😉 these would make great gifts. I have 3 different sizes of the cutting mats, because my Mom was a quilter, and when she passed, I got her quilting supplies, I love using them. Because I love them so much, different sizes could be made for different gifts. What do you think? Sometimes when you can't find an item in the store, it may be available online. At hobby lobby you can get the cutting mats for 50% when they get the sewing section for 50% which is at least once a month. The 8x6 was $3 last time I bought it and the largest one was $36 and I got it for half off.

Hi Lela Eber, For the clear quilting/sewing rulers try Michael's Craft store, watch the Sunday paper for the 50% off coupon, or sign up for the email coupons. And if you're over 50 (or 55, I forget) ask for the senior citizen discount on top of it. (If you're not over 50/55, take someone with you that is.) JoAnn's Fabric store carries them too. Sign up for the email coupons there too. And also ask for the senior discount there as well. They are also sold at Walmart, but for full price. Try Hobby Lobby as well, but I'm not sure of their coupons, or discounts. (I have one Gmail account just for all of the emails from stores. I can ignore it until I need to go shopping. Great idea - thanks for sharing! I find that this size mat can also be used in place of one of the cutting pads in my die-cutting machine. It saves a ton on the clear cutting pads! 😊

Anyone else's 'OCD' kick in with that 1 mat turned in the other direction from the others. LOL 🤪 I probably would tape the blank side and cut on the lined side. But I can't cut or draw a straight line to save my life so I need the guides!

What a great idea!! I'm in NC. I've seen these cutting boards many times while on the search for items to make various YT projects 😁 I thought they were small and never thought to tape them together so I continued to walk past them. Last week, a lady in front of me at the check out bought TEN. (I know b/c I heard the cashier counting them.) Guess now I know why. Wonder how long it will be before these "disappear". Some Dollar Trees also have some clear cutting mats in the kitchen section. They are about 12"x18" and you get two mats.
