I bet foam core would work well in the place of the cardboard! It’s pretty sturdy especially if you get the good brand from Walmart or staples! I’ve made my own storage foam board. I have to do this! But instead of cardboard I’ll use foam :) I’m not going to be putting anything heavy on there anyways and the foam is more water resistant so I don’t have to worry about it getting soft. You are so amazing!!!

That was so smart to do the decoupage over the bottom unit seams and corners to make it nice and smooth before painting!! It's such a pretty display unit! LOVE IT!

just an idea, instead of cardboard, use the foam boards that you can also purchase at the dollar store. Anyway, great idea. I'm going to try this tonight!!
