But I have a question...when using as indoor night light, does the jar need to be placed outside or in a window each day in order to be charged? Or is there enough indirect light under normal home conditions for the panel to charge?

SassyFras40 ** hi, if hanging indoors they would need to be in full sun for at least 8 hours. We used a few in my daughters room as a fun alternative to her traditional night light and she loved it!!! (But it was a pain to have to charge them.. and I forgot often!) I like the idea of using them indoors and outdoor when you have friends over but I dont know how practical the indoor lighting would be on a daily basis. (I’m a frugal gal and love the idea of using less lights, hence y dollar tree obsession😂) Let me know if you make these! I’d love to see your finished product! ♥️♥️

@@OrphaBeatrice oh that you for such a kind response. Do you think if they were left on a windowsill all day, like as if that is where they always stayed. Do you think they would charge that way. Its fully "sunny", just not outside in DIRECT sun. Do.you think that would work? My daughter has large bright windows with a big windowsill , I wanted to surprise her with a few, but what do you think it would work ok,?

The string is tied around the jar using the wire the the jars come with, thus not disturbing the solar panels charge efficiency

@@OrphaBeatrice Your video clearly shows you laying the string right across the top of the solar panel. you claimed it wouldn't affect anything. A object, even a small one, that lies between the sun and the solar panel will effect efficiency. I know this because I had this issue with my solar panels. I tested it with a voltmeter. The solar panel will still work, but it takes longer to charge the battery and decreases the run time of the light when the sun goes down. It is far better to tie the string around the circumference of the jar than to struggle with jamming it in between the ring and the lamp and twisting it in-between the threads and the lid. A Jug Knot removes elbow grease from the equation. If that proves too complicated use a pair of clove hitches. If you still want have it your way jamming things together, that is your prerogative, I would just recommend that you cut away the string from the top after it's all assembled. Don't get me wrong I appreciate the time and effort you put into making a video. I'm just pointing out how you can do it better.

@@ScorpionRegent Check out the video at 2:41... that is where I attach the string to the jar, not the solar light.... that is how i assembled the ones in the photo.I offer second, less ideal option at the end or the video. I'm glad you appreciate the video. Its intended to be a budget friendly way to hang decorative party lanterns outside. my viewers LOVE easy and inexpensive ways to decorate their homes. The voltmeter testing seems excessive for a dollar store lantern but someone may find your testing worthwhile, so thanks for sharing!

​@@OrphaBeatrice - I apologize for being unclear. A jug knot is superfluous to the lamp built in the first half of the video. I was a addressing the Mason Jar Lamp build later on where the line crosses the panel and gets jammed between the lid, the lamp and the jar. The second half of my last comment got cut off. Tying a knot removes the need for elbow grease. If you are really want to jam it together then it would be a good idea to cut away the string across the top of the panel when you're done. Yes using a volt meter is excessive over kill for dollar store party lights, if the party ends in the late evening. I actually bought larger solar landscape lamps from a hardware store that use conventional battery sizes, AA and AAA. I converted them into Mason Jar lamps and also use them as poor boy battery chargers. By removing the batteries every evening and putting them back in in the morning over several days I can charge high capacity batteries. These batteries will allow me to run the Mason Jar lamps all night at events like Burning Man and other such festivals with on site camping. It also builds up a stock pile of batteries for the next power failure. I liked the colors from the lamps in the first half of the video, yet Mason Jars are practically free so if i want colors i will use colored lamp gels to modify mine. At the bottom I'll have a sprinkle of glitter and some bright Mardi Gras Beads. So you could say I'll have Extreme Party lights. Keep crafting!

With tinted glass jar, they might not give enough light.. I would try a clear glass jar!
