The best thing about Dolly and Kitty is that they are a mess. They can lie and steal. Both do really dumb things but because they are played by two keenly intelligent actors - Konkona Sensharma and Bhumi Pednekar - they don’t come off as silly or capricious. Watch the review to find out more. You can watch Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, directed by Alankrita Srivastava, on ‪@NetflixIndiaOfficial‬.

this is one of the few times i disagree with anupama, i really enjoyed every bit of this movie and i think all the points were necessary for us to emerse ourself in their world completely and it came together beautifully at the climax! though i wish it had a happier ending but i guess that's what make this film real! Konkona and Vikraant were stunners ( but i've always loved them so i might be biased)! anyway every single member of the cast did a fantastic job, whether it was neelima aazmi, karan kundra, kubra sait, the boy who played pappu etc, every one of them in their little part were phenomenal

For a movie that deals with some pretty harsh issues, it is surprisingly and heartbreakingly tender. Some people have commented on the number of issues that this film is trying to tackle. To me, they felt like a part of the whole - different strands that go towards creating a social fabric that is so suffocating. Beautifully written, directed and enacted!

Disgusted with most of the comments against the movie and review. Anyone slamming this movie is either disconnected from reality or has turned blind eye towards it. This movie, though a little over packed with content, still delivered stunning performances from each cast member. The story worked its way out in the end when the 2 female leads find their true calling through the courage within them that they never knew they had. Every character in the movie was human, with its failings, but also looking for anything that brought personal happiness, even if momentary. People have become desensitized to seeing real emotions on screen. They would rather watch cars exploding, glamor dolls, men cussing and groping women, and everything in between. This movie is not their cup of tea.

There is a difference between real liberalism and fake liberals. Unfortunately a hypocritical society such as India who have false liberal flag bearers the message of the movie comes out demonizing one sect and glamourizing the other. A real liberal finds a solution not by demonizing the other party. What effect do you think will this have an impact on the society. Normalizing extra marital affairs and breaking up family's have a longer impact on children. This I can personally vouch for by living in west for years. Each and every movie right now coming out from this production house subtly is against the Indian culture and its traditions.

I saw the movie, it can be very jarring at times, but I found it refreshing and on point. Its a well written and layered script... Anupama, I am disappointed in your review, maybe its a generational thing... don't know... But, like Bulbul, these are important stories that need to be told, however uncomfortable they might make the viewer. If MLK hadn't made the establishment "uncomfortable" many laws wouldn't have been passed.

Is it problematic to show female characters slap male characters in films, like this film shows? Should it be criticised?
@Wearealltogether1428
@Wearealltogether1428 3 года назад
It's not out of toxicity. It's a reply of a gruesome cheat. Not because someone claims/thinks another person as their property. Although physical abuse is bad, here is a reason. Majority of the films where a girl is being slapped is just because she simply doesn't obey unquestionably to her male counterpart.. Be it her father/guardian/partner/brother /husband etc. #DIFFERENT.

Don't you think it's becoming a trope: Woman or section of people in the fringes of sexual sphere exploring their freedom through sex. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it. Even literature is filled with similar tropes. As Robert Frost says in the poem: there is something that doesn't love a wall. Everyone has to deal with their own walls. And breaching those walls are an act of temporary liberation for each one of us, until we find new walls. Every art is about breaching boundaries, questioning transgressions directly/obliquely. But I'm tired of watching sexual transgressions on screen, though it's alluring. Artists should seriously sit down and think about it on what walls they intent to break (and how). Especially the ones in bollywood, mediocrity over there is alarming.
@nikhilthottingal1366
@nikhilthottingal1366 3 года назад
One way to start the change is from the critics side. But... The critics just don't seem interesting anymore as they appear to be stagnant. Film Companion should seriously consider to bring more intellectually stimulating conversation questioning the status quo of current critiquing ways.
@shovnam6823
@shovnam6823 3 года назад
Historically, women were oppressed using their sexuality. Even in modern ages, female oppression usually involves exploitation of sexuality. Therefore the trope of women finding freedom from oppressive/regressive systems through sexuality is quite common. It can symbolise other forms of freedom, such as expression, financial, social etc which is explored through sexuality. Sadly mainstream indian movies haven't been able to create a nuanced piece of cinema exploring this trope. Therefore this trope will continue till they actually make something worth watching.
@nikhilthottingal1366
@nikhilthottingal1366 3 года назад
Very true. They should find new ways for telling stories or as you said.. to find more nuanced ways of exploring those tropes. They should bring additional layers to it. Or atleast try to tone down the glossiness.

I hate that Netflix seems to segregate Hindi language films into Netflix India and not let them into Netflix USA. “Dolly Kitty Aur Woh” seems more urban and Western in its feminist style, which might more appeal to a liberal American audience. True, the possible audience for Hindi language films in America is woefully small. And successful NRIs often reflect more conservative India or have gone almost totally American in their movie watching habits. I appreciate Netflix showcasing India premier actors, directors and screenwriters but why limit access to Hindi language films only to India residents or Indians with funds in rupees outside India? Shouldn't Americans be allow access to view these films if Netflix truly values Hindi cinema? I understand there are financial considerations, but these can often doom original films to much smaller audiences. Also a 2 hour or less running time can indicate that a potentially well-developed story has to be edited down to fit the shorter time slot on OTT platforms damaging the narrative flow or leaving fuller development of the story cut out in favor of a best scenes aggregation or an unbelievable unearned ending. That such films get seen at all by anyone is some little compensation.

@larrybone4065
@larrybone4065 3 года назад
Thank you for the correction. I am wondering, are the actual producers that Netflix purchased the film from acknowledged? I feel fine on Netflix purchasing the Indian films to exhibit but it appears very bad if they pass themselves off as the creators of the film when they merely purchased it for distribution. People in the Hindi language film industry work as hard or moreso as their American film brothers and sisters. There should be proper acknowledgement, always. Otherwise they are passing off someone else's film as their own and that's very wrong. Maybe you feel it's okay or there is some sort of acknowledgement.

@@larrybone4065 Most of the movies are tagged as "Netflix Original" movies. This Dolly & Kitty movie was. And I agree with you that it's disingenuous on the part of Netflix to tag the movies as such if Netflix's only role was to purchase the movie for distribution. If it's any consolation, movies from Africa are similarly tagged even though Netflix had no hand in the production
@larrybone4065
@larrybone4065 3 года назад
I didn't know that about African films. I think that is just as bad because of the two years it takes to put the film together and the getting the funding to even start. I guess Yash Chopra and Eros International set up their own distribution but these days directors and producers need to set up their own OTT platforms or get a legal contract stipulating full credits be run or else they can be sued. Also a legal contract stipulating the final director's cut cannot be reedited to a specific shorter run time. That is, respect the integrity of the story the director has created. That the story survives largely unharmed.

A good attempt to show double standards of Indian society's stigma, suffering and sexist treatment towards women based on class, background and region. But it's a one sided, men are framed hypocrite, which is not true, better if showed shades of menhood with their suffering with stereotypes. The picture shows women are always prime victim of sexual exploitation or machenical sex not connected with soil or mind. In this movie if women do extra marital affair with both side agreement, it's valid and acceptable considers pride empowerment. Whereas, in the movie "pati patni aur woh" if man does same thing it considered as negetive, evil and punishable offence with embarrassment. I guess, Indian movie creators are not sure about right and balanced social approach or they think women empowerment is cool thing.
@shwetaachaubey5544
@shwetaachaubey5544 3 года назад
Exactly correct. Some people come and say that there are movies like pati patni aur woh where men cheat on womens which everyone will find fine... but comeon dude.. that movie itself potrays cheating as a purely negative thing... and here cheating is shown as a symbolism of liberation. Like in every feminist movie and series the cheating is purely justified..like what do you wanna proove that if men can cheat...so can women . But the real point is who ever cheats is completely wrong irrespective of the gender.

Legal data from past 10 years shows that adultery is leading cause of divorce• Films should be taken as Films only not real life , but Films create pop culture and pop culture copies films• E•g fevicol se cheap song is playing in marriages and men and women gyrate thinking they are Kareena kapoor• To prove fallacies of men , do women need to mimic similar behaviour ?? And each movie atleast in past decade though even ones in 80 or 90 s have singular focus on sex, Why ? Because film producers and directors are exploiting one of the strongest desires of body that is sex and making money out of it• Desires of vasana are very difficult to let go off or satisfy, boredom comes in them, even if this character of Konkana marries delivery boy , in 5 years time she will be bored with sex life• Desires of body are very difficult to fulfill or so continously demand change of partner• the earlier adult human man or woman understand it the better their relationship and society will be• From Desires of body couple need to move to desire of spritual bond and that only can bring peace to couple• otherwise couple will be dancing in illusion of mind and desires of mind•

Did people commenting here miss the parts of the movie where Konkana"s husband wanted to sleep with Bhumi before Konkana's affair. Also, he would rather self pleasure with phone sex than find love in Konkana. That is not CHEATING ON HIS WIFE? What about Bhumi who was swindled into having sex, by a married man with a young wife and little baby, while making promises of true love? THAT IS NOT CHEATING INNOCENCE? How is this movie about feminism? This movie shows atrocious behaviors of men that disregard and disrespect women in their lives. The women, in return, are just learning to cope with the disillusionment and taking charge of their own happiness. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT NOT GOING DOWN WELL FOR THE SLOW MINDS.

@@amulyasubhash7764 😂he is not talking about sex. The movie is deeply problamatic. Normalises cheating on your partner just because of your sexual desires. Filled with meaningless hinduphobia and many other problamatic things. It is nothing but another Netflix india garbage which shows women empowerment is all about having extramarital affairs, smoking and drinking. Such a hopeless film.👎
