I don’t think it’s full of compliments. I see it as one woman recognizing that’s she’s been beat. She’s recognizing that she is the “lesser” woman (because Jolene is so beautiful and desirable) and begging her to choose someone else. It would be like Halle Berry showing my man attention. In real life, I know my man would be loyal to me. But I’d still be nervous.
This song is ulterly touching. She chooses to open her heart and feelinga to the woman who wants to steal her man. With super class she makes Jolene realizes there is no purpose on stealing a man from someone Who really loves him just to win some stupid seduction game. This song is powerfull.
... most youtube comments about these topics should be actually rephrased the other way around ... and that would go something like this "how did we come from that to this"
It’s no,secret record execs don’t want people with talent.they say it all the time.theyd rather someone nowadays that they build,so the person has zero leverage against them.its not about good music or talent.its about selling.
I love the psychology of Dolly. She’s hyping Jolene up trying to tell her she has her pick of ANY MAN and just begging her not to take hers. It’s so beautifully done.
ugh, as a metal head, I remember growing up in foster care and my foster mama always listening to Dolly and Billy Ray. It’s been so SO many years. I think this is the first time as a 21 year old that I’ve ACTUALLY listened to Dolly personally since I was a little toddler in foster care, and for some reason I burst into tears? This song isn’t even sad. It’s just her voice, the melody, the rhythm, and the nostalgia all blended together literally brought me to tears.
Nah man, I get a little teary eyed because it's about a woman just begging for her man back because it's her world. She sang that so well. But reading your story, it adds a whole new gravity and shows how the song can apply to our lives in different ways too. Also a metal head here. Respect for Dolly Parton!
Her talking voice in itself is so musical, “he talks about you in his sleep” sing song, a lullaby. This legend of a woman was born for music. The art needed her.
I'm Canadian, and as such hear CONSTANTLY throughout the layers of country music fans..how Shania Twain is the QUEEN of country! I disagree! Dolly takes that throne for sure. I'd rate Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn not far behind Dolly, and definately before Shania
I was 4 when it came out. I made my brothers sick with this song I played it so much, and I can't tell you how many people have sang this song to me. I should be receiving royalties. I have the flaming locks of auburn hair, though it's turned more of a reddish brown with age, and my eyes are blue, not green. There's a little story that goes along with this song as it relates to my name, but I'll save it. Oh, and I wish everyone would stop misspelling my name. It's "een" not "ene".
@@gaatjeniksaangaatjeniksaan718 I think she said the story was true but the description and name was the little girl because she thought her name was pretty
I’m from Ukraine. Moved to USA 13 years ago. Someone asked me if like country music and I didn’t Know what it is. They put “ Jolene “ for me. Since than, I love everything Dolly Parton, and don’t care much for modern country music. Dolly is an icon! There is such a heartfelt and pure quality to her songs. No one is like her.
Lisa Mona: I don't like modern "country" either. For you to gain context, I suggest you Google hpr.org. Select HPR1 to listen at really old country music, and then select HPR2 to listen to country music popular between the really old and sometime in the 1990s. The time periods are spelled out somewhere, but I have forgotten what they are. The artist names and song titles appear as the music plays, so you will know what you are hearing, even though there is no verbal commentary by DJs (although right now there is some appeal for operating funds, which they do only twice a year.) I am a Bluegrass fan, so I listen to HPR4. HPR3 plays Christmas music, and only during the Christmas season. I'm glad you are here instead of there. Oh, by the way, I think you should play my video at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-upj5S1E8qJw.html Also, you can Google sidscardshop at any time to bring up a list of my 290 videos, and I think if you click on my camera icon above it will take you to my channel - not sure, since what I see and the rest of the world sees regarding my account is different. +guntherbladderburst Yes hehe you can watch the interview where she speaks about it on here somewhere :D It was a little girl she met at a concert and thought was stunningly cute, she asked for her name and thought it was beautiful and that she'd write a song about her :)
WOMEN OF HER TIME WERE NOT AFRAID TO COMPLIMENT ANOTHER WOMAN, EVEN THOUGH THIS WOMAN WAS A SKANK, DOLLY RECOGNIZED THE POWER OF BEAUTY AND HOW EVIL IT CAN BE, WHEN USED AGAINST HER. DOLLY DIDNT HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT, BECAUSE DOLLY HAS ALWAYS BEEN STUNNING.
Am I the only one blown away by her beauty (at that time, there were NO surgery to have such a beautiful face! or good proportions!) and her powerful singing?!
I love how Dolly praises Jolene, like if a man wrote that part of the song it would perfectly be a love song. "Your beauty is beyond compare With flaming locks of auburn hair With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green Your smile is like a breath of spring Your skin is soft like summer rain And I can not compete with you, Jolene" You can see the values of that time, those that would change some time in the future, in which they tell how beauty isn't everything but back then it was very much so and she envied Jolene for it. Dolly herself would challenge these values; she's such a gem
@@davidkropodra i hate when people go like “ugh nowadays music isn’t the same as it used to be before, modern singers can’t sing at all 😫😡😤” what kind of music are you even listening to.. Of course there are actually some bad singers out there, but there were bad singers 20, 30, 40 years ago too. For example, have you ever heard that one of the supposedly “terrible” singers, Ariana Grande sang an entire verse in the *whistle register*. This is something that VERY few people can do and I doubt Dolly could have done that.
@@icevee686 obviously there were bad singers back then just like now but now more people are using auto tune, there are going to be people that can sing better than Dolly Parton AND Ariana grande. For you to compare them is idiotic yes Ariana can sing more higher notes but they have COMPLETELY different singing styles. Nobody has ever said Ariana has a bad voice. I’m glad this was dollys raw voice instead of autotune seeing her flaws is more realistic and nowadays people would autotune it up, that’s why there saying no good singers today because everybody autotunes. There incredible singers back then such as now but no need to compare.
@@icevee686 I bet you couldn’t do Ariana high notes either so for you to say that is out of pure spite, yes dolly has flaws just like any of us thats what people want more of not an autotune mess. Why are you only talking about Arianas beautiful voice theres others like tori Kelly, Beyoncé and many more just like back then.
+Marija Ciapa Her eyebrows and skin indicate that she is. Dolly has pretty, naturally blonde hair, but wigs are part of her mystique, so she wears them all the time. She has a room full of wigs.

+Marija Ciapa I see what you did there, well played haha
There’s thousands covers of Jolene LOL. It’s such a famous song to cover. Nobody can do Jolene like Dolly but the covers are fun because everyone infuses their own essence into it.
0:45 the way she goes from chatting in that adorable voice to hitting the first notes of that song is just insane. She goes from sweet to powerhouse. She's amazing. Grew up listening to Dolly while fishin' with my dad in the 70's and early 80's, and still love her today (and miss him).
There is something so haunting about her interpretation. While the song recalls a painful memory, she addresses Jolene with respect and even high regard, all of that with dignity and the charisma of a queen. If I were Jolene, I would feel like I committed sacrilege
I like this song she lets her insecurities completely open for all to see and even compliments the ladys beauty who's trying to take her husbands , I've never heard a woman sing so honestly about this type of situation ...
Yep, 22 when Jolene came into her life. That was in 1968. Just about the time she was on the Porter Wagoner show..... So lets assume Jolene was around the same age, she may well have been at the bank when this came out. Hope Dolly still had her account there by this time. Jolene probably had to go back to school to learn how to count that high........ I bet she felt like a total dumbass in the late 80s. She basically handed Dolly about 6 million dollars, and still counting.
She sure is. Hes a very private person. You go to DOLLYWOOD hes sometimes spotted by Dolly fans who have only heard about him or seen the one photo from the 1970s of him online. DOLLYWOOD and theirs a strange guy clearly not security hanging around Dolly. People talk to her he backs up head down. Someones trying to stay unseen but people notice. Someone says to Dolly whos your boyfriend. People look shocked. Dolly laughs. Hes not my boyfriend. Hes my husband. Mystery revealled. I was theree to see it. . He's a quiet man soft spoken. He clearly loves Dolly so much. But hes also very private. And fan attention isnt his thing but he loves and supports fans as Dolly does.
I know that country music was popular in Japan and Korea but also surprisingly in South east asia and Vietnam (not huge of course but notable). I have a grasp of why but if you can give a further explanation it would be appreciated.
Ashley she was a paid model. I knew a girl who worked in Nashville and she got paid to stand in the front row of concerts bc they wanted pretty girls seen first on videos.
hell, I'd be like ''now I can die happy'' knowing Dolly insulted me, it's almost like a battle scar your proud of. when you think of how sweet and genuine she is and then to be called a hussy by her would be a extreme honor. Dolly is one of those celebrities that are timeless and a real role model for other's to look up to. there are a few female celebrities that I could be insulted by and I would simply reply '' aww your sweet'' Dolly Parton, Whoopi Goldberg, Wendy Williams, Sandra Bullock, Tina Turner are the only celebs that I would be proud to be insulted by.
I don't know why but I thought it was so cool when the audience broke into applause in the opening lyrics & she, without missing the rhythm or breaking character, raises her arm & then does this little bow to acknowledge it...like she knows her star power but is so humble & subtle about it.

This is an entirely different classification of true country the kind that has gone to sleep since the time of Johnny Cash and this Era of Dolly Parton and many other when songs had major deep emotions and a lot less repeative lyrics
I'm in a fb group called "This Cat is Jolene" and it's just photos of smug-looking cats canoodling with various husbands and boyfriends, and it's the highlight of my facebook feed tbh
I heard this song with my wife in an oyster farm restaurant by the beach. My wife told me she would do what was needed to keep me around just like Dolly's singing. Then, Dooly's 'I Will Always Love You' came on, I sang along and I could see tears in her eyes.
G my friends hair does that too, she’s a redhead and its lighter than burgundy or super duper red. She has that little debbie typa red hair and in some lightings it looks blonde or strawberry blonde.
Dolly Parton is one of like 5 celebrities that have absolutely no faults and are a national treasure. I would consider Betty White and Keanu Reeves to be on that list too.
She also declined an offer for a statue from a town in tennasse I think, saying nows not the time for that lmao, she also is the only celeb who has common sense I have seen
You probably can't name a better person, a better representation of the best your country has. She is truly an ambassador of love and generosity, unity and just plain common sense. Sorely lacking in the world today!
You know she's a great singer when it sounds like she's speaking while singing. So many singers now seem like they can't tell a story properly because they are so worried about not being able to sing their own songs.
@GhettoFights1045 yes it is. The many rappers of today isn't singing. They don't know how to properly sing, not rap so don't get caught up on their bullshit. There are few good rappers, and many of them just don't sing anymore. But that doesn't mean its not to exist anymore. You just don't listen to the right ones because it's so clouded with the large quantities of the shitty ones lol
