On this trip we headed out for a backpacking trip in West Virginia's famous Dolly Sods Wilderness. We planned on doing a 2-night trip but due to limited water we decided to push out on our 2nd day. The Dolly Sods is a very unique area that sits on a high plateau around 4,000ft in elevation. The northern half of the Sods is very open and exposed with limited water sources so be sure to plan accordingly if you are coming to this area.

Awesome adventure! Some amazing views, beautiful campsite, and that night sky…wow! Elliot did great, that’ll be a memory you’ll both share.

It's nice when he gets to make it out with me. Most the time he is really busy with soccer and school. It's always great when you get a chance to see a clear night sky.

Awesome trip! The camp site was really sweet. I’m hoping to get to the dolly sods soon. Hopefully later this summer. Your son was a trooper and made big miles. Awesome! 👍

First of all, kudos to Elliott. Nice job, buddy. Derek - Treasure every moment with that kid because the day will come when they develop their own interests and time spent with the old man becomes less and less. I would swear that campsite in the pines is the same one we stayed at in 2019. We had a deer, too, who was pissed at us for invading his territory and snorted at us all night. Thanks for taking me along. I need to get back down there one of these days.

That's why I try to get him out with me when I can. He is already pretty busy with soccer and school in summer and spring. There were alot of nice campsites in various pine areas only problem is most of them were dry sites. It's interesting because most people describe the sods as a very wet area but our experience was a bit different.

Did the exact same route two weeks ago. Camped down by Red Creek the second night which was almost the perfect site. Great vid once again Derek!

Awesome, glad to hear you had a good trip. I didn't get to check out all the sites down by red creek but from what I saw they were nice. What I have noticed is that the places in WV are alot more rowed than alot of the places I go in PA.

@@HikeIntoTheSunset Crowded?? We got there late evening on a Friday and the parking area at Bear Run was packed. We passed probably close to 20-30 people over the course of the weekend. The old Loggers Path here in PA was the same way last June. I tend to seek out obscure trails that no one talks about in the warmer months anymore. The Terrace Mountain Trail is next on my list.

It's a cool place. If you do go I'd be mindful of the time of week and time of year. I've seen some crazy pictures of the trailheads jammed packed with cars both sides as far as you can see down the road lol. It's a popular place, for good reason though.

This is an excellent video!. Kudos to showing Elliot how to backpack in the Wilderness, Your time with him is priceless. However it is pronounced hammocks... not ham hocks.
