Excerpts from a Political Debate on Television Malta, 17 February 1989. (Xandiriet Politici - L-istampa Tistaqsi)
The subject of the debate is: "Power Station f'Marsaxlokk - Pika jew Bzonn?"
Former prime minister Dom Mintoff (Malta Labour Party, in opposition) and Minister Michael Falzon (Partit Nazzjonalista, in Government since June 1987) answer to questions by the press. Members of the press include: Joe Micallef (Il-Poplu), Frans Ghirxi (L-Orizzont) and Mario Schiavone (In-Nazzjon).
The debate is moderated by Joseph M. Pirotta.
A new power station was planned to be constructed at Delimara/Marsaxlokk, and Mr Mintoff, an architect by profession, explains why other areas, such as Benghisa and Hal Far were more suitable for a power station, claiming that this power station would destroy a beautiful area which compirises the Delimara peninsula and the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. It is also claimed that works at Delimara/Marsaxlokk would be more expensive given the clay and sand on which the foundations were to be constructed.
As a background to the issue there is the general allegation that the power station was to be constructed just across Mr Mintoff's summer residence in Delimara only to spite him.
The power station was eventually constructed and Mr Mintoff won an eventual court case and was compensated for damages.
