Dom's RX7 has an interesting back story. Rented from a private owner and transformed into a world famous street car, this car went on to be re-purposed for 2 Fast 2 Furious.
@@sheeraz552 Yeah for lack of better terminology. You know what I meant. In this context, "staple" means "a default need; a basic necessity". Whats so funny about that?
I wouldn't really call it a staple of the community, so much as it's an influence on tuner culture. Granted, said influence led to plenty of mixed messages, not to mention the franchise's more style over substance approach. Even the more "realistic" Tokyo Drift has some mishaps if you know a thing or two about car culture. It also didn't help that tuner culture was getting confused with ricer culture, which was a massive red flag for car guys. The excessive decals and exaggerated bumpers and side skirts and blinged-out rims making less for practicality and more for attention. Simply put, Fast and the Furious is to car guys what WWE is to wrestling enthusiasts: over-glamorized fiction.
@E Peen I can respect that. I actually played a few GT games myself (though I was also introduced to games like Project Gotham Racing, Rallisport Challenge, and Forza Motorsport, as I grew up with an Xbox in the early 2000's), though I was generally more into the likes of NFS, Burnout 3: Takedown, Midtown Madness 3, True Crime: Streets of L.A, and the GTA games simply because of how over the top they were. I was also into jank filled messes such as Driv3r and Enter The Matrix, though that's an entirely different discussion.
Damn some of the stuff the production crew wanted in these films is ridiculous 😂 Like how they wanted that tasteless wing on the RX-7 at 8:07 and also how they wanted Roman’s car to drive upside down in a freakin’ tunnel... You really did an amazing job to bring them back down to earth in some of their decisions, well done. 👏🏼
Because Initial D is made by car guys, for car guys. Fast and Furious is made by people who mostly care about making money, for people who usually have no clue about cars. That is the sad truth. Remember in the Jetta video Craig said that woman was getting a contract from Dodge to get those Neon SRTs? She mostly only cared about the contract and didn't give a toss about what impact those Neons would have on the audience. There's your example right there.
Makes me smile to hear you say these movies werent targeted for actual car enthusiests but these movies sure did spark future car buffs in me and my friends
you are single handedly responsible for an entire generations passion for cars and driving. Thanks you, i dont think you'll ever really know how much these movies really meant to me but thank you
Id love to see the rx7 return in a fast and furious movie. You could have a scene where dom opens his garage door and rips off the cover to reveal an old and dusty rx7. The following scene will be a 20 second montage of dom drinking corona while painting it black and LS swapping it followed by a rough masculine quote about family.
Oh yes! as a Rotary enthusiast I was waiting for this one. The FD3S RX-7 is my dream car so these were by far my favorite cars in the movies, and I was crazy to know more about these RX-7s, specially their fate which is pretty nice to see they all basically survived (save for the micrig car). About the rumours I sincerely hope they don't touch this car again, feels like these days Fast and Furious is all about "how much destruction we can cause" and it would be disheartening to see this fantastic car going to waste, specially when Mazda built around 35.000 of these cars which is not a lot. The style from these RX-7s aged surprisingly well too, specially the 2F2F car which reflects the more "simplistic" approach people have these days for car customization, you did fantastic in telling them off that 747-sized spoiler, it just looked goofy and ridiculous, even for these movies.
I remember when I first saw one of those, brand new at the time, RX-7, in 1993; it was black. I was, at the time, working at a gas station in VA, working the full-service single gas pump at a gas station. It was gorgeous. What made it even better, it was all stock and appeared to owned by an old gentleman; it was not riced-out like those in these movies.
Cool fact, the driver of the white civic in the first fast and furious went on to create motegi ro_ja wheels, seems like they used alot of those in the movie.
So I’ve been watching you’re videos religiously and only today subscribed all I can say is if any car guy ever had the opportunity to sit and enjoy a beverage with you would be a honnor keep up the good work
Awesome video as always. I’ve always wondered what the deal was with the NSX (and matching Dodge Ram) in 2 Fast 2 Furious. Were they Ludacris’ personal cars?
In the Prelude to 2 Fast 2 Furious when Brian arrives in Miami it shows Slap Jack and Orange Julius turn the corner revving. The sound clip there for the Rx7 actually sounds like a rotary. Its interesting to me how the sound editing team sometimes gets it right but other times gets it so wrong.
Goodmorning from the 909. Thanks for uploading Craig these behind the scenes footage is unreal, your channel is awesome. You give me motivation to one day be as successful in life as you and own badass cars.
I don't think this car is coming out in Fast 9, they had a mustang swinging from a vine like Tarzan. They're beyond tuners, nos, and trucks full of dvd players at this point.
Love the stories on the fast and furious cars. I’m more of a muscle car guy and started following your channel when you posted the video on Doms Charger. Keep the videos coming.
How on earth did the sound team think that a Honda 4 cylinder sounds better than a rotary engine? Were they drunk?? Listen to the RX-7 in Tokyo Drift, it's easily the best sounding car in the whole movie.
Damn, audio production crew messed up bad... Why switch the audio around away from the real cars?? All those cars have a great sound as they are, 13b/f20/2jz/rb26... Why mess with their sounds?? Man oh man. But as you said, movie wasn't targeted to car enthusiasts. Thanks again for saving another piece of the movie by not letting them use the rice wing on the rx7 haha.
the 13b brap is downright iconic, but nope, let's change it to the sound of an inline 6 that will literally appear later on anyway and get a ton more screen time so we can hear it anyway given it's also downright iconic... Oh well "movie magic"...
With all the mentions of how the cars of these movies having swapped exhaust notes. I just like to imagine (when re-watching the first two movies) that these particular cars were engine swapped. Especially now considering how popular engine swapping different engines from different manufacturers has become.
Gixxer Boi I think we all would. But the way the franchise is setup we wouldn’t see basic cars come back because they aren’t super cars or cars that can believably fly through the air.
skiingrocks00001 no I perosnally think they should’ve ended the saga after Fast Five. And i never even watched fast 8 because of how rediculous the 7th was. But if they bring back the nostalgia from the first movie in the 9th than I am more inclined to watch it.
It’s a beautiful car and great handling but the drawback is the inefficient motor. It drinks gas like something 3x bigger only to make 2 times the power but claims to be a 1.3 but uses gas like a 3.9. Just to make 2.6 power
I think we all can agree that the only FnF movie that's slightly targeted toward gearheads were Tokyo Drift. Yeah they still spice the sounds in post-production (like the S15 that's supposed have RB swap but in reality it had non-turbo SR, but hey, at least the sounds were right). Did you still worked for Tokyo Drift, sir?
Now I know why the new Fast and Furious movies dont have much nice cars, he said the movie was based on other things and the cars were just on the side, i reckon there should be a movie with more cars and the culture, maybe with a different story but more nice customised cars, fast and furious was my favourive movies growing up and i still enjoy them. Thanks
Fast and furious just not the same anymore it was truly an era of its time..even the most recent fast and furious it had a mclaren ? And a muscle car with some pressure gauges attached to a helicopter ?? where did it ever go wrong from civics rx7s supras ye all know yereselves the good days are over love this interesting shit brings a bit of the old days back for a few minutes thank you Craig 🤘🏻
Sadly, Vin Diesel curb stomping a crack in the parking garage to make it collapse is more the flavor that audiences are looking for. I’ve watched the original maybe 15 times and could recite most of the film line by line, I saw F&F8 in theaters once and don’t have any desire to watch again. A local theater did a screening of the original film last summer and it was honestly the most enjoyable experience I’ve had in a theater. Best we could hope for as far as these movies going back to their roots is maybe a low budget spin off focused on the tuner culture again
He was the one that was in charge of chosing every car and the modifications or some.u can tell cuz he says something about the color or anything he was not the one that was in charge of deciding.
