Doma Vaquera is dressage for vaqueros. The garrocha pole is traditionally used by the vaqueros (Spanish cowboy) to work with cattle in the fields rather than roping. The wooden garrocha has a metal point at one end, is approximately twelve foot long and its diameter widens to the size of a hand grasp at the top end. The garrochista's work is part of the vaquera training. The rider must be able to ask the horse to perform all the movements required using only one hand on the reins: the left, or bridle hand, thus freeing the right hand to handle the garrocha. The art of working with the garrocha pole, about 12 feet in length, has been developed into an artistic skillful performance.
