One question, are you classed as a tourist if you just take a day trip to an unfamiliar city and come back at night?

If domestic tourism has such importance and revenue generation abilities compared to international tourism, why the focus of the governments is centred upon international one?

Developing countries choose to focus on International Tourism for economic reasons, but that does not means domestic tourism is not important. Developed countries do not focus much on international tourism because of the strategies and plans they have in place are working, also domestic tourism becomes a regular economic activity on daily basis. Although pre-Covid some developed destinations, ie Barcelona, Venice...did not want international tourists. Domestic tourism is very important, with strategy and management plan it works very well. Here is an example for you: After the 2015 Sousse terrorist attack in Tunisia, the tourism industry fell to its knees. The domestic tourism managed to save the economy, then tourists from the neighbouring countries: Algeria and Libya helped the situation back then in Tunisia, until Covid-19 has killed it. However, currently both domestic and international tourism are suffering in Tunisia due to the inflation, high charges and the very poor quality of the tangible and intangible amenities.
