This review features me reviewing and testing the Dometic CRX50 fridge in a 7 day off grid test in my van. We take a look at the Dometic CRX50 fridge installation, power, and performance. In this video, I give a full 'real life in the field' user review of The Dometic (Waeco) CRX50 12 volt compressor fridge and freezer on a week-long trip away, with changeable UK weather and only a 120w solar panel for power. Let's take a look at the Dometic CRX and review how it performs. The fridge is only using the consumption of my two 12 volt leisure batteries with a 120 watt solar panel on the roof. So in this video, I'm going to show you:
• installation (wiring and install)
• capacity (what can you fit in there?)
• power consumption (using only a 120w solar panel and UK weather for powering the fridge)
• understanding the control panel (and warning lights)
• which settings to use
• the solar charge controller
• the amount of charge that the compressor fridge is taking
• how often it kicks in & how it's worked with the contents inside
• what sort of stuff I can fit in the fridge
• how the fridge performs overall
It's true that campervan fridges can actually be fairly expensive, so it's highly recommended that you invest some time and energy in research to determine which campervan fridge is most suitable for you, and I hope this video review of the Dometic Waeco CRX50 campervan fridge helps you with this process. If you enjoyed this Dometic CRX50 fridge review, featuring my van fridge 7 day test and discussion on CRX50 fridge installation, power, and performance, please remember to like, share, subscribe, and leave a comment if you have any questions or feedback. We hope to see you here again soon!

Hello Tony My English is very limited, I have to use a translator. I bought this fridge a few days ago and I didn't quite understand how the freezer works. The notice in French sucks, I looked everywhere on the internet, then on RU-vid where I saw several videos, including yours (subtitled in French) and there I understood everything. I live in the South of France in a very small van, and I love ice cream, hence a fridge with freezer.
@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews 2 года назад
Hi Nicky. Wow the translation is fantastic great job 👍 I’m so glad you found this video helpful. I too am an ice cream addict I love ice cream, and I find level 3 works great at keeping the ice cream just solid enough. Thanks so much for sharing your comments and for taking the time to also translate this. It really makes my day when I see places from around the world people are watching these videos. I’ll soon be hopping on the ferry myself over to the continent with the van, so my freezer will also be set to number 3. Take care and enjoy the French ice creams👍😊

Another great review Toni, but did you really pay around £600 for that tiny wee fridge - I mean that kind of money would buy a hell of a lot of twixes. Just let everything go soggy, that's what I say. I'm just going to the shops now as I'm delighted and amazed to see they still sell Fab ice lollies. 1970's here I come!
@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews 3 года назад
Yes I did pay £600 for a tiny tiny tiny fridge! My house fridge only cost £50 second hand! But I only bought it as I’m a complete ice cream/ lolly freak, so although I could get by with soggy veg I couldn’t go without a fab or two… actually being the bargain Hunter I am they aren’t even real fabs, they’re Aldi’s Blitz … if you pay close attention you’ll see knock of brands all over the van… spot the cheesy curls (not quavers) on the shelf!

Hi, thanks for the video!! Im thinking of purchasing this fridge but I will only be using one 80-90ah battery with two 100w solar panels. I live in a very sunny country (Malta) and will be mostly using van for 3 days, maximum 5 days (but mostly will be for the weekend). Do you think I will manage to keep the fridge running on this set up? Thanks
@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews 2 года назад
Hi Andre. My parents also have the fridge with 120w solar panel and 90ah leisure battery. Recently they used the fridge on holiday in the uk and the fridge ran the battery dry after about 1 .5 days. They had the fridge on level 3 as they had ice lollies in the freezer. I think Malta is great for the sun, but then you also have the heat which means the fridge needs to work harder. I would say maybe with 2 leisure batteries you may be ok. This is just my opinion from my own experience. If you can keep the fridge on level 2 as it will save more energy. It’s a great fridge, and very good on energy consumption, but you will probably need more battery power to store the energy from the solar. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

Great real life video 👍🏼 one thing I’d like to know. When the compressor kicks in does the fan always start at the same time. I noticed my fridge running a lot and found the fan defective. I can’t ever remember hearing the fan so I’m just wondering if it was defective all along. Cheers
@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews Год назад
Hi… many thanks for the kind words of support. As for the fan… I’m not sure to be honest. I think I’ve only ever heard the compressor kick in and not really paid attention to the fan, however I would imagine that it runs on a thermostat and kicks in when it reaches a certain temperature. As long as the fan is kicking in that should suggest it’s working . If you fin the fridge is overheating and cutting out, it’s usually down to there no being enough airflow around the fridge allowing it to breathe. Hope this helps 👍

Hi. How has your fridge been going ? Have you had any issues since its been over 2 years ago now? I have read reviews about this fridge and so many people have had problems with them but its good to read some positive comments on here as im thinking of buying one but worried that I may be one of the ones that will have problems with it. I hope not. Also do you know how many amps per hour on average over a 24 hour day? I know some fridges say 2amps per hour on average over a 24 hour day but I think this one you have may be half that which is good. Also, do you have a TV in your van? Just curious and does your solar panels and deep cell batteries power your lights and TV and fridge really good? Thanks from Australia 🇦🇺 😄
@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews 9 месяцев назад
Hi Al.... all the way from Oz... wow I love hearing from people around the globe. So yes 2 years on and heres the low down. So the fridge is still going strong. I have it wired with a 15amp fuse directly to the batteries, however I notice that even when im not using thr fridge and its switched off it seems to still draw power, so tip is remove the fuze when not using the fridge/ van. I havent had any issues other than it switiching off on me once and that was because the power in the batteries was low, it was a bad week fior the solar and on the journey home the fridge switched off as not to permanentkly damage the batteries. My dad had an issue with his swithcing off a lot, then he realised he hadnt used the coirrect with guage, so make sure you use a sturdy enough cable!. I dont have a TV in my van, I use an ipda, but i regularly charge my laptop, phone, drone and gorpro cameras, as well as using my lights and fridge in the van. TVs are a big drain on energy you mught want to think about an ipad or somethinng ? also the most common problem people make is not venting their fridge well eniugh. make sure there is enough space around the fridge for it to breath and its vented. Ive seen some people in hotter climates fitting a small thermostat and an additional fan to create airflow. Mine doesnt have this as im usually in a fair enough climate, other than heatwaves at 32 ish degrees in british european summers and the fridge has always been fine on number 2 seting. Hope this helps. :)

@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews Год назад
Hi Chris. Many thanks for the sun hopefully you will find the content interesting and helpful! The fridge doesn’t take too long to get to temperature, although this depends on a few factors. I.e, how cold you are setting the temperature, how’s full the fridge is and what the ambient temperature is inside the van. All these factors play a part. Generally the compressor comes on every now and again if I set it to level 2 which is roughly the average temperature I use. Hope this helps 👍

What is the hotest outdoor temperature that you have had with this fridge working well?
@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews Год назад
Probably 40 degrees in central Spain. I had the side door open in the van at night attempting to get some cool air in the van it was that hot at 11pm at night, it was still registering 33 degrees . Granted the fridge fan and compressor were running constantly in tht heat to keep it at a consistent temperature inside, but everything was still ice cold inside, no issues, and I only have 120w solar panel which was running and charging everything in the van. Fantastic fridge and very economical on power consumption.

Your Voltmeter reading will help you understand the approximate level of charge along the following lines: 12.7V or over: 100% 12.5V: 75% 12.4V: 50% 12.2V: 25% 12V or under: Discharged So at 6.26 your reading of 12.46 volts suggests your battery is 50% discharged.

That’s great. Thanks for sharing this. It was a pretty average uk week for weather on off rain and cloud, and I had the fridge in a pretty high level and the whole system seemed to cope pretty well on a 140v solar set up so thanks so much for sharing I’m sure many will find this helpful including me.
@ajpepe72
@ajpepe72 11 месяцев назад
Voltage readings during the day don’t mean much as it will rise and fall depending on solar input, a really bright period will send the voltage up but then it will drop again when clouds come. The ideal way to monitor true state of charge is to check the voltage a few hours after sunset. Or look in your history tab which will tell you the minimum and maximum battery voltage for any particular day. What it drains to during the night is the true state of charge 👍
@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing. The only thing with measuring voltage and through the history tab is if your using other devices which consume power also. Nevertheless the fridge has continued to work well. It shut down once to preserve the batteries in a very bad week of weather, but luckily at that time I was on my way home. Hopefully the video gives a good idea of how the fridge performs in a typical English weather scenario running on solar only. The history tab is a good indicator of how much power you are consuming and yielding so a good indicator 👍

@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews Год назад
Hi paul. Many thanks for leaving a positive comment on the video and in sharing your experience. I think the CRE50 is the older model that precedes the crx (I think). But hopefully this may help a little. What I’ve experienced is a few things which may help. My father in law had a small Toyota van with a rock n roll bed etc. he fitted the crx 50 as his old fridge was faulty (or so he thought) he binned the fridge bout the CRX50 and the same thing happened. What was happening was the fridge had no air flow and was over heating and cutting out. Similarly I’ve also seen people fitting them with no air gap ( squeezing them in) also I’ve seen people in hotter climates adding thermostats and fans as you get in computers to help keep them cool. I recently did a month in Spain and Portugal and I must say the fridge performed phenomenally. One day I drove through central Spain in 40 degree heat and even at 11pm at night it was showing 33 degrees, yet the fridge kept running. generally the issues are of the fridge isn’t ventilated enough. I’ve got a small open vent at the back of the fridge in the cupboard , plus large air gap all the way round, plus a vent that runs the entire length of the cupboard it’s placed in and this seems to be doing the trick. As for the flashing orange light if you check the amount of flashes, the Dometic website has a fault code which should tell you what the flashes correspond to. 9 times out of 10 it’s generally the overheating issue. Hope this helps. 👍 If the orange light is flashing or red it’s a fault. If it’s just an orange light the fridge is fine, it just means the fridge has reached it’s temperature and the compressor is not running. A little confusing I think, but basically a static orange light is a good thing.
