I've been selling handmade soap for 11 years. I've done a lot of shows where people just sit back and ignore their customers. You have to engage! I have people ask me what my favorite scent is, and no matter which one I pick, that's the one they buy more than any other.

Oh that’s an excellent suggestion! If it’s your favorite and they believe you then it must be something very special and now they want to have it. Brilliant. 🔬

Thank you. I do engage with customers and it is amazing what I hear. Some people are really lonely and want someone to talk to. Then I switch the conservation to my hobby, jewelry, and we can click on that topic. It doesn't work with everyone, but I am still learning.

This is very, very helpful, thank you. At our first show we started with the C and gave up about 2 hours in and went with the tables in the front. It helped but it was still a slow show, not enough stuff for sale. I like your tips for making sales.

I have to disagree. As a customer I hate it when the seller tries to push me to buy something. Just let me browse. When I see sellers doing that, I avoid going near that table. I shop better when someone isn't guilting or pushing me to make a purchase. I'm a vendor too, I see the customers looking uncomfortable when the sellers push too hard.

@bacskocky
@bacskocky Месяц назад
It can be unsafe to push into the aisle. I’ve seen in the comments where you say that you have been spoken to, moved back, and then pushed forward again when they walked away. That sort of thing can get someone on a list of vendors who should be avoided. And other vendors notice, since it can affect the flow of traffic and cause people to skip the neighboring vendors. Those vendors will talk to event coordinators as well, warning them of people who don’t follow the event rules. (I am an vendor coordinator myself as well as a vendor, and failure to follow rules can seriously limit what events people are welcome to vend at)

All good points. The only thing is that at most of the outdoor shows I've done, the tents are set up smack up against each other so you can only fit 1 table front and center and the rest have to go inside the tent. You could spread out like you showed only if you paid for 2 spots or more, which of course adds to the cost of doing the show.
@MattsCrazyArt
@MattsCrazyArt Год назад
Very true. It varies per show. Still put every table way in the front, even if you can only display half as many items. Push your table as far out in front of your tent as promoters will let you. I've been yelled at by promoters to push my tables back and I still only push them back a few inches

This is very timely for me. Thank you! Thank you! MORE PLEASE! I have been asking their favorite crystal or color to get conversation going, but I’ll try asking their favorite piece and see if they’ll try it on - and update if it helps. I notice you use a lot of humor in your interactions, which I think helps you even though you didn’t highlight it. And do you discount everything? Or how frequently? Lastly at what point do you “greet every customer”Obviously when they have stopped at your booth, but do you also reach out to people that are passing by? Wait for eye contact?
@MattsCrazyArt

Stop everyone, even if they're trying to get away. Double your prices so you can easily give discounts. Don't wait for them to try it on. Force them to.

Some helpful tips. Luckily I don't have an interest to be a vendor at a craft show like this, but more so the low-key artisan markets. But i love your tips about displays, colors, where to place them etc, The pushy banter is not for me. I hate it when others do it to me and I avoid those vendors. But I'm also an introvert, so ha! Your right about pricing pieces higher cause at markets hoomans always want to haggle the price ...I learned from doing shows put at least 3 or 5dollars more cause that's what they tend to discount. And honestly if someone buy my item at the fake higher price I tell them they won a discount😁 That's just me.

Great Video with Excellent tips for newbies. What fees did you incur for the space? Here it is $300 per day, upfront regardless of weather or foot traffic. So doing shows has not been an option. It was much easier when you could pay your fee at the end of the show or weekend event. Would Love to know what fees you were charged and what State you were in. Also, we have seen city officials watch sales and if they observe anyone offering No taxes in the sale you are fined and written up with a strike against your business.

You could wear great clothes to emphasize the items you sell to show how you love what u do. You can also use scented oils and wipe your table or sprinkle on the ground to create a soothing space. And props like wind chimes or video tablet showing how u make your stuff. Ask them how they are doing today, and what they think about your stuff, then u can show them something special and talk about the rest. If they like something, give them space to ask more about it. Good luck.
