When it comes to learning jazz we need to be learning jazz standards. And I find that the most important part is how we actually go about learning them.
So in today's video, I'm going to share with you an awesome practice itinerary to learn a jazz standard in one month and really crush it.

As a member of the inner circle, I can tell you that the best mechanism of learning and proficiency for me has been the chord tones and and guide tones. It makes the scale map really make sense. The Jazz Standards Inner Circle is $$$ well spent on your musical journey.

Thanks a lot! What I also do on guitar: - 1st week : learn the melody (on the top 2 strings) and the chords separately - 2nd week : learn a simpler version of a chord melody (only bass on the bottom two strings + melody) - 3rd week : learn the full chord melody : bass + 3rd and 7th on the middle two strings + melody Works great for getting the voice leading down :)

Words can only approximate my gratitude for your outlining a common sense, well organized and superbly sequenced curriculum for learning a tune. Your examples are exemplary-the two chord tone mapping illustrations and directions demystified the entire process. I am a fan. Absolutely fabulous. Thank you!!!

Jazz standards pushed my boundaries. Im glad to hear this guy promoting learning scales as many Jazz teachers are against learning scales and promote chord voicing but learning scales can really bring out some cool tensions and musical ideas so Ill give this channel a thumbs up 👍

This is great!! I remember being taught to learn the root note/bass note as the first step of learning the harmony for a tune.

Thanks, I was actually thinking about something like that to a rather complex tune. Since I‘m a bass player, I‘ll probably replace most of the „ear“-stuff with a working on rhythm.

Good advice, thanks! To answer the Q: What I like to do is find a handful of versions of the jazz standard on RU-vid or Spotify or (gasp!) the library, etc. Then I listen to them to really absorb what the main aspects of the song are, melody, chord harmony, rhythm, etc. For example, "All Blues" by Miles Davis and then by Larry Carlton. Comparing and contrasting them helps to understand the song and its potential for when I want to go for it with my own mad scientist jazz versions. ;-)

Great stuff !! Thank you. In order to answer your question : I would suggest maybe to include a routine of listening to the standart and different versions of it during the four week. How about one listening every day, 1 or 2 different versions per week until the end of the month. Anyway hope you like my suggestion to all of you fokes. Once again you are awesome. THANK YOU

For learning the chord progression, I marked all II-V-I and what key it is and it made it easier for me to learn it by chunks. I am fairly new to jazz standards and it was overwhelming to see a lead sheet with all the chord changes. It was confusing to see chords that seem unrelated to each other. I just discovered your channel. I love the color of your guitar!

I’d only add mapping the chord changes with functional harmony (Roman numerals) and eventually transposing, at least the melody, as I feel it’s a great ear trainer.

came to know about ur ear training course i understand the main purpose is to hear and translate immediately right but does it going to help u to improve the quality of actually hearing music in head like hearing good one good progressions and melodies how does this will work or its just for what you hear in head and then translate that on instruments for eg piano so my main question is quality of hearing music in head if yes how does this work i will buy your course if this happens

What are the requirements to have learned a Standard? Is it to know the changes and play through or what is in your opinion the checklist to finally have learned a new standard?

Can anyone please explain to me the week 3: learning jazz language? What is jazz language? Or in a specific tune, what should I learn in week 3? Thanks in advance
@samitrickz
@samitrickz Год назад
I hope I can help you with my comprehension to what is meant by the jazz language part, I think one should actually find other versions in the same scale tone: let's say, you play Bossa Nova Jazz standard on C Major, look for other performed versions on the same scale, and listen to what is played as improvised authentic phrases. Then, you adopt those phrases/Licks/patterns and use them in the improvisational part. I often analyse those patterns by using the same method discussed in the video; I look at the chord tones sequences and I check if there chromatic notes in between. and I try to internalise those patterns and use the in other scale tones. (if I say anything wrong, please people who have much knowledge on music theory and jazz, could correct my answer, so, I don't mislead the instructions)

Also when you’re doing the scale mapping thing, try to start your phrases on the 3rd, 5th and 7th degrees of the scales so your brain won’t get locked into always starting on the root, a very hard habit to break!

Shouldn't this take like ....10 minutes?Or so.Ok, 1 hour of extensive exploring/reharm , etc?If a standard is to be ''mastered'' in one month, after 1 year you have one set to of 50 minutes.Cool.In 2 years you could eventually play a club gig.Hotel would be in other 2 years, as that would imply 4 sets.And after another year (that would be the 5 th) you can have a spare set to change a bit.My God.That is a really fast;-))))))).Snail related point if view.

Hey Brent are you putting on these incredibly annoying ads that keep popping up during the video? Do you make money from them? I'm seeing this more and more on RU-vid and it's getting so bad it makes me want to not watch RU-vid any more. This is nothing but pure greed. Can't these ads be kept at the beginning like they used to be?
