20+ years in cybersecurity and I've never heard any security expert prefer windows over mac/linux. Windows is a tool to be used when debugging/reverse engineering windows vulnerabilities.... thats about it.

After using the latest mac m2 provided by my employer, and given my Linux-only experience in the past 6 years, I can totally see why a Mac is better than Windows for programming. I *really do not want* going back to Windooze, definitely a downgrade.

I'm about to start university (cyber security) and I don't know which to pick between a Mac (Intel or M1) or my current Windows PC which is an Asus with RGB ram and 256gb SSD. I like apple products but people say that macs have problems with Virtual Machines(sorry if I said this wrong) and compatibility in general but please let me know what you think

Id save the momey and try to use the PC for now. Something like 85% of enterprises use Windows so its a must on how to navigate it well. Sorry this is so late!

His arguments are about 10 years out of date but then his Mac is from pre 2012 so it's out of support at least 7 years. Mac has some great virtualisation options like UTM that are free and based on Qemu (as is virtualbox). VMWare Fusion pro and Workstation Pro are now free for non commercial use so there is no excuse. It is absolutely capable of doing anything you throw at it easily. Ive worked in Cyber Security for 10+ years and saying a Mac is not suitable is silly, I've yet to find any workload I can't do on a Mac even though I daily Debian. TBH I would recommend windows to a student always just based on almost guaranteed compatibility with their coursework. A Mac is more expensive but in the company I'm in we have found that on average a surface lasts 2 to 3 years, a Thinkpad lasts 3 to 4 and a Mac will last 5 years plus. That's with heavy use and knocking them about. I think telling people they shouldn't buy a Mac is wrong but telling them that they don't need a Mac is correct.

This is someone asking for advice. His advice was, in this circumstance, to not buy it. College student who saved up for years needs to squeeze every peny they can get. Even if the VM thing is out of date, Apple devices cost more.

As a software engineer who is frequently forced to work with Macs, I can tell you in no uncertain terms that you are wrong. "great virtualisation options" -- bullshit. Mac virtualization may have been usable back in the era of Intel macs, but with Apple silicon, it's basically too slow to be useful. As far as VMWare being free. It's free as in your first bag of crack. Have you seen what they did with the licensing for their customers who were paying them? Beyond extortion. There's no reason to think that they won't do this to their "free" tier users too. If you're gullible enough to believe a tech company when they offer you something free, maybe you deserve what you get, but I can't let you post it for the unsuspecting, younger, and or new to the industry people. This is the worst advice I've heard in a long time, when kvm/Qemu is free and always has been and always will be. And you can run it on Linux which is also free and has the best security posture out of the box of any common OS. Please, people, use your brain. Definitely don't be fooled by OP. Also, don't be fooled by this video's creator. And especially don't be fooled by Ryan. Yikes. So many bad ideas packed so densely.

@@jxtq27 What utter gibberish. Virtualisation is great on a Mac and even better on Arm Macs. Parallels and VMware Fusion have the best performance by far but Qemu based apps are performant enough for most people. Shows how much you know because VMWare Fusion PRO was made free this week by Broadcom for non enterprise use which being a student would certainly fall under. Broadcom have messed up the VMWare licensing elsewhere though, my renewals from gone up roughly 300% to a few million in the last 3 months. Im under no illusions as to why Fusion Pro is now free, if you use it as a student or for a private project then you are more likely to want it at work too. It still makes a quality piece of software free for the majority of people. Im sorry you can't get your Mac to work for you, while I can't speak to what you try to work on I know that my user base which is cyber security teams and software engineers prefer MacOS over Linux and Windows at a nearly 2:1 ratio. It looks like you are as ill informed and as out of date as the original video.

I'm sorry that you understand computers so poorly, but honestly I don't have the time and energy to educate someone as rude as you about ISAs or what cyber security professionals do, and why those factors make Macs unsuitable for a lot of work that isn't targeting Macs (or possibly Graviton). I hope in your next life you get intelligence and charisma.

I use macos as sys admin job flow with automation. Windows lacks UI UX, which is why Mac exists. and Mac is more sure file system than Windows. I rather use VM for Windows and Linux for cyber ? So my big question is how much should I spec my MacBook with memory and storage ?
@Kyle.Marvin
@Kyle.Marvin 5 месяцев назад
Depends on your workloads and needs. For instance, I keep 2 4gb vms up all the time, and I do video editing on top of that, so I hit 32gb ram and it tends to be a bit overkill but 16gb wasnt quite enough but is probably fine for most folks. For storage, I sit at 500gb and use externals/cloud for backups and clean out old useless files. My vms dont require much storage, otherwise a lot of folks prefer a 1tb storage. All depends on your needs!

MAC excel at usability with an amazing trackpad and keyboard experience. I can type 111 words per minute on any Mac easy. their keyboards are really well done. additionaly, power management is done better on a Mac. they rarely over heat. battery is great. it powers on instantly when I open it. the rest sw/hw is all similar. macs are based on Unix so I can develop and operate with all of my favorite Linux tools: tmux / vim / docker / etc... I can do the same thing just as easily on windows with wsl or natively on lines. I did have to buy some extra usability apps for my Mac that come built in or are free on windows. for example window manager and paste2 for clipboard manament on Mac. on windows windows management is built in and clcl / ms built in new clipboard works just as well.
