@@sofiafigureskates Yeah i was planning to buy these cheap ones online. Good to know that these are worse than rentals. This has saved me money so thanks ❤
It honestly depends on the quality of the second hand skates. Remember, our skates mold to our feet so you really would have to try them on to make sure they will fit you because they won’t mold again. Also, have to make sure the padding isn’t completely gone on the inside. Best to get your own but I understand if someone can’t for financial reasons.
Yes! I agree I have been skating for 8 years and this is such a good option u just need to look into what type they r. I always look for the skates that say used once or twice or never even wore them. 😊
For beginners I’d recommend Graf 500s- not suitable for single jumps as far as I’m aware, but they have great beginner support while you’re learning basic skills, crossovers, simple spins etc
I have Graf skates circa 2000 and I thought they didn’t manufacture them anymore! Someone told me that. This is good to know! Love my skates they’re amazing quality
I have graf prestige. I could already do some footwork so single jumps is my goal with these. They are a bit firmer than the caprice (those would have also worked skills wise but didn’t give me enough support). They are great boots (I think the 2000 are even harder though so might be too hard to break in for a beginner)
For the people wondering the skates in her hands are Jackson mystique. I had them as a beginner and they were great 👍. I’m now in Edna chorus with mk professional light blades which are great for preliminary until doubles!! Love ur vids keep doing them❤
i got my first pair of skates, jackson mystiques, right before covid but then covid hit and i had to quit my lessons and now im 4 sizes bigger than them and now i have to get new ones 😭i wore them like 5 times too. they were really good though
When I was a kid and went to skating classes I would get 2nd hand skates from skaters that grew out of theirs, they were life savers and also saved us a bunch of money
As a figure skater myself, I highly recommend Ridell skates for beginners, specifically the gem line and opals. Know that everyones feet and ankles are different, so what I recommend might not work for you, that's why there's so many different designs. If you want the most comfort, you can heat mold to your feet, punch out areas (like the toe box or an ankle bone area), add padding to certain areas and tweak the support (which is pretty expensive), and I very highly recommend inserts so you don't injure yourself in the future if you land incorrectly or the bad support overtime causes issues. Hope this helps! :)
i actually got a pair of those 40$ walmart skates. They were MUCH MUCH better than the rentals my rink had. They fit, stayed dry, had no cracks or bumps that press into my skin, a lot lighter, had laces, and came with sharpable blades. I used them for about 6 months before selling them to a younger girl who's hardly ever skated. When I sold them they were only bent by the ankle and had no damage at all. And I learned most of my basic skills up to Walt's jump except for spins with them. I got Jackson's as my second pair.
Heyyy fellow figure skater here! This is really good advice cause when I first started learning I got a cheap pair of skates like the ones she showed and it was not helpful whatsoever so when I started taking private lessons I switched to Jackson’s which gave me the ankle support I needed ❤
for a beginner use rental skates to get the feel of ice skates go IN PERSON to buy skates bc you need to feel comfortable , size check , and they should be good for YOU once you get more into ice skates then you can go ahead and buy more expensive , advanced and supported ones
I have Graf prestige. Graf caprice are also really good. Depending on your level maybe one of those (I could already do some footwork and started waltz jump etc) Otherwise I think Jackson Elle or debut or so (mystique is also often recommended but idk if they will be worn out too quickly if you are an adult)
i started figure skating in 2022, i had my skates for a while just never used them. i got them as a gift a year prior to starting figure skating and had them for a couple months over a year over a year until i took them to get sharpened one time and turns out one was a size 8 and the other was a 7! also i still have no clue but the back was falling apart and i had little to no ankle support. do NOT settle for the cheap skates i recommend getting the american skates BUT with a lot of ankle support because i had the american skates but they didnt have padding or ankle support. the ones i switched to recently have much better padding and stability
Someone in my learn to skate bought a 50$ pair on Amazon. In our level 2 class, they started falling apart. Literally falling apart. She couldn't even skate in them they were just falling apart... she barely passed but never came back to level 3
Yes your skates are so important and make sure to Mold them to your feet to avoid blisters you can also find high quality used skates to get you started and even as a experienced and super competitive skater when I can find slightly used skates (like someone used for a month or two and grew out of so there still like new) I go for them bc they are way better priced and are pretty much new (I also have a rly trusted person to do it for me she’s run a store with sizing skates and selling skates)
second hand skates are an amazing option! as a teenage figure skater, my parents don’t want to be spending upwards of $500 o. figure skates so I just get mine from my local play it again sports. when I need to size up I can just sell the old ones to play it again sports and buy new used ones! your skates don’t have to be super pretty or brand new to function. trust me, buying beat-up but functional skates is way more worth it than pretty ones that don’t work.
Also, as a beginner, DO NOT GET EDEA SKATES. I understand that they are good for professional figure skaters or more advanced, but they do not help beginners one bit. They require at least decent ankle strength maybe from someone who has enough experience to effortlessly stroke across the ice and have most to all of their single jumps including single axel. Number two, they are expensive. Like really expensive. I’m considering getting them bc my Jacksons have a hole in the inner padding and the support isn’t really as good for doing doubles. Number three, they have a high heel lift. Typically, beginners will find lower heel rises easier to balance in and develop their skills in, but Edea skates do not provide that since they are for more experienced skaters. There ya go. Another brand of skates you shouldn’t buy as a beginner.
I've been skating for about five months and just recently got a new pair of skates and they are Edea Chorus, I advance too quickly to get less supportive skates that will last me a while. Definitely listen to this comment if you are just starting, but if you have been skating for at least a couple months and you advance VERY fast and don't want to be buying new skates every few months so you can continue to progress, talk with your coach to see what is best for you.
Controversial opinion, but generally speaking I agree with this. The ankle support in Edea is lacking and ankle strength and stability is something beginners often struggle with. If you have a background in dance or gymnastics or something and have strong ankles, you will be okay in Edea, but otherwise it will be more challenging for beginners.
I think if youre just starting out, dont buy those skates that are made for double or triple jumps as they may be too stiff for beginner levels. Its best to get good quality beginner skates so look out for that :)
I always recommend Jackson Freestyles for beginners. They are a cheap enough skate that will take you all the way to single jumps. I started in my freestyles and absolutely loved them! ❤
Between buying an extremely bad pair off of Amazon, or just renting, I would choose renting. Stick with rentals until you reach a certain level, or you’re sure you want to stick with skating.
I’m around basic 4-5 (learning by myself after taking classes for a while because I have no money at the moment heh) and I got some riedell diamond skates. Got them second hand, for like $50 and they are great! I’m even learning some begginer jumps in them (bunny hop, waltz) and I feel like they have good ankle support for your first times doing jumps :3
okay, one of the BEST ( I started out in these ) ANDDD most affordable beginner ( level 1-5-ish ) skates is the Jackson excels, like, trust me on this these are AMAZINGG
Even if your just doing it for a month just invest in good skates it will help you a lot also you forgot one…….NEVER BUT SKATES WITH TOO BLADES AS WHEN YOU GO HIGHER THEY WILL NOT HAVE THAT JUST INE BLADE AND YOU WILL FALL OVER WITH THE TITANIC!!!!!!!! (Ps: This is coming from an actual ice skater)
This is great similar to hockey skates, and once you are ready to buy skates preferably go to a store that sells equipment. Try on a few. DO NOT if they are anything like hockey skates. DO NOT BAKE THEM AT HOME. Baking is a process of heating the material to mold to your foot. Some can be baked some cannot. Sometimes you don't want too cause they are already comfortable. Most importantly pick what is comfortable yeah they can be expensive but the foot problems are way worse then just buying good skates. Also yes they can be 500+ dollars but they will last you for years some 10 years maybe even 15. It's a long time. If it's for a kid generally skates are cheaper but there is a thing as too much if you have to replace every year. I'm generally speaking to people done growing.
As someone who started on Jackson softskate, I got to beginning jumps with them, waltz and salchow. Please don't do what I did and buy yourself something higher quality. Skates with very little support hold you back drastically. I got to the point where I was falling out of almost every three turns and couldn't hold my edges for very long. Once I bought my new skates the Jackson Ultima Freestyle my coaches pointed out an instant improvement. Good quality gear is incredibly important for safety and skill progression.
⛸️⛸️Jesus CHRIST!!!! When I saw that crease I was like “OH MY G-“ I thought mine was bad! Haha I’m getting new skates on Tuesday and I’m soooo excited. So glad u got ur new skates. Support is definitely super important. As I started jumping and spinning in my Jackson excels I realized I wasn’t getting a lot of support and was starting to struggle so I’m super excited to try a new pair. Cheers to us xx Edit: OOF that tongue too!!!! Lord that is horrendous for things like jumping! Honestly 70 bucks was a rip off. The person selling them should have thrown them away. I’m glad that you got as much use out of them as you could though ❤❤
The fact that my old rink refused to sharpen my skates because they were to nice 😂 And that the rink was constantly trying to get money makes it even better
I first started with store bought ones like that and I was fine, but the skates were still like $80 which are definitely cheap skates but they're not cheap cheap skates. My current skates now are custom made specifically for my feet and I get my blades sharpened every 3 months (My actual skates are $600 and I spend over $300 on my skates per year, but it's worth it if you haven't had an injury in 6 years)
As a learn to skate teacher rental skates are great and some that look the third is goood for the first couple basic skills level but after that you should look for better skate
Yes. This is true. I had no idea and almost bought some off Amazon for 44.65. But then I wanted advice from a professional (or as close to a professional as possible) so I asked my coach and she said that (and this is a direct quote) “If you skate in those you are guaranteed and broken ankle or more.” So luckily I didn’t buy them. Yea don’t fall for that.
yeah I definitely should've gotten those as my first pair. I started with Jackson Excel and from what I've read you aren't supposed to jump in those at all but I had been for my first four months of skating before getting Edea Chorus. Excels are literally like skating in cardboard lol
I bought the 2nd pair as my first skates and personally they were way better than rental, my feet never hurt and I was able to do jumps and spins. 60 bucks and I dont regret it at all
I did something similar and I was jumping and spinning as well, but compared to other skates, they felt like cardboard lol. It's honestly impressive that you were able to do that off of $60 skates, hats off to you.
If you're looking to buy your own pair but still aren't 100% sure you want to invest a lot of money try looking for second hand first! I got my first pair from the coach that I had at the time. She had like 5 pairs and brought them all in to see if I could fit any and one pair ended up working out.
The last one is what my parents bought me, but then we found out that they were too small, so then we ordered a Jackson skates from Amazon, but then they were too small, finally we went to Colorado and ordered skates that fit but took 3 months to ship.
For my first pair I got Risport Venus. As far as figure skates go, they're pretty budget, but they have great ankle support, and they are durable AF. Hard to spin in though, at least with the Risport default blades 😶
You should always buy from an actual in person store, my first pair of skates were about $300 but they lasted a long time. Don't settle for cheap if you don't have to
I have skates that look kinda like that, but I swear they're good quality and I don't figure skate with them, just leisure skate The second 1 kinda looks like mine, but I promise they're good skates from Canadian Tire, not cheap stuff I bought online
yeah but you also don't want to buy professional sketes get some jackson mystiques or elle they are lightweight skates and they are budget friendly. Note I am a figure skater star 1 with friends in other groups like star 7 they all recommend skates from jackson NOT EDEA.
I found skates (oxelo) ones, i used to have rollerskates of this brand and they worked well. They have a thin tongue and no support version aswell but also another one thats great for beginners and is stiff
i have second hand lake placid skates (they have cute lil silver streaks on the side ❤) and i dont find any problems with the support NO ITS SO BAD MY ANKLES ARE SO HSBDIHANSJAUDGD
I recommended buying from Jackson Jackson can be expensive but you can buy wore ones and it’s practically new and it only costed me 90 bucks so if ur looking for skates I recommend Jackson’s
Jackson are a good starting skate but look at the weight/jump level befire buying one. If your buying a skate made for axels when you cant even do a walts jump, you will hurt yourself. Same if your doing an axel in a boot for walts, you will also hurt yourself.
LOL the American skates were my first pair of skates ever. Wasn’t meant for anything other than just skating around and learning how to actually ice skate before anything else😃😂
Good skates for beginners Jackson- artistry, Evo Edea- brio Ridelle- Horizon, opal I’m a figure skater too I’ve had both recriational ones off Amazon beginner Jackson and high level edeas so I don’t know how nice the edeas or ridelles I suggested are they are just lower level ones but Ik edeas are most of the time really nice but if your looking for the cheaper option I’d say ridelle but what worked for me was Jackson so ik they will get you through basic levels 1-6 I skipped levels 4 and 5 but the evos got me to freestyle 1 when I got my edeas
It depends. Professional skates require ankle strength and will definitely hurt to break in which may make you think that the skates are bad, they aren't you just need to break them in. Definitely don't get professional skates if you are a young child, it will cause health issues down the line because young children are constantly growing. You don't need to purchase professional skates as a beginner, it isn't necessary. However, if you have the money and feel like you progress quickly, professional skates may be good for you.
I wish I had seen this when I started figure skating I’m almost a year in and the first pair of skates I bought, cause I didn’t know anything about skate brands) broke while I was doing a jump! (The brand I got was one of them in the video.)
I learned backward and forward crossovers, waltz jump, two foot spins with those skates. Now with my new skates I know all my jumps up till a flip, scratch spin, backspin, sit spin, tuck, pancake and camel spin!
I think the biggest realize to splurge a little on good skates is you’re literally using a blade to move around on ice, idk seems a little dangerous and like you might need ankle support but that’s just me👀👀😂
