Great video for what not to do that all sailors need to know. I was aware of all of those rules but didn't realize why some of them are in place until you explained. Thank you!
I know they're noisy - that's why i take the opportunity to inflict my life choices on you by letting them run up and down the corridor so i can get a couple of minute's peace ✌️
Regarding the extension cord issue: for people with cpap machines, the issue is pretty difficult, I have not been on a cruise ship with an outlet by the beds. But I have been able to arrange for the cruise ship to provide me one.
We have the same problem. The last time we asked for an extension cord, they brought two and connected them to get them to the cpap machine. They didn't work, and they couldn't find ones that did. We now bring an extension cord and keep it in with the machine. We haven't had a problem since.
But people who don't follow Gary wouldn't have seen that, so it's great that she is doing this video to share these great tips! Nothing she mentioned in this video is unique to Gary. 😉 If you search RU-vid you're going to find that there's probably hundreds of videos on this exact same topic by various creators.
I cringe when I hear "take your own good toilet paper". As a person that uses a septic system, I know the problems several "good" brands can cause in certain systems.
She's mentioned that she bought it second-hand at a thrift fair in Italy, years ago....and she loves the fit and comfort, but had no idea who the Tennessee Vols were. 😀
1 hour ago! I love your videos, and I was just wanting something from my cruise people! Love love love your stuff! (squeal!) Edit to add: this did not disappoint! Thank you so much.
Great video, I was wondering if you would be able to do a video on how time is kept whilst working an a cruise ship and dealing with time zone differences
Basically, you’ll get a leaflet or notice of some sort telling you that clocks are going forward or behind by an hour that evening. If you are traveling through multiple time zones, they typically will do one hour per evening on consecutive evenings.
Honestly, I’d prefer to tidy up my own room. I don’t like strangers coming into my accommodations; especially, when I’m not there. In hotels, I keep the do not disturb sting up the entire stay. I just request fresh towels & other items from the front desk or cleaning staff when I see them in the hallway.
Don’t be nervous. The STCW stuff is really easy. It can also save your life, or the life of someone else, so pay attention, but none of the material is hard to understand. You’ll do great!
Non-magnetic walls on the Volendam Holland America, in our 7th floor Balcony room. Even our room steward was surprised as it was his first time on that floor.
She bought it at a thrift sale in Italy years ago, she liked it and likes the fit/feel...but didn't know the Vols teams. 😀 It really is a small world out there, huh?
It is important to check about the mini bar, not on a cruise but we were charge for the bottles of water in the room, we been on non cruise all inclusive and the mini bar has been included in the price , we nearly got caught out on the first cruise we went on, looking at the prices of the mini bar, it was better to use your all inclusive with drinks included at a bar.
People should resist the temptation to use extension cords even at home many extension cords are for light work like a small radio etc and people plug things that should not be plugged into them eg hair dryers some can use 1500 watts and cause the extension to overheat.
Regarding the climbing the railings; DO NOT try that at ANY hotel on the island of Majorca. People have died doing it, and if your found to be doing it, you can be fined and kicked out of the hotel for it.
If you use a CPAP machine, often you will need to use an extension cord to reach the bed from the outlet. If you bring your own, make sure it's compliant with the cruise line or borrow one from the ship. Let them know beforehand and also order some distilled water for your CPAP humidifier, if you use one.
As I wrote earlier, the cruise line will provide adequate extension cords for medical devices, as needed. FYI, most cruise ship cabin stewards will immediately disconnect any non-ship-provided cords and then call engineering. An engineering staff member (or sometimes security) will remove the cord and offer you one of theirs.
My wife and I both use CPAP machines. You think finding 1 outlet is bad, try finding 2 by the bed. We bought 2 extensions cords to use on board. However, we went to the cruise website to see what kinds were acceptable to use. Our cruise line allows cords as long as they do not have internal surge protection.
@@captainjohn49 I brought my own UL certified cord I bought from a reputable source. No surge suppression. I put it away every morning. I heard that sometimes the cord the ship supplies is sometimes much more substantial than needed and it can get in the way. My CPAP uses 6 amps maximum. (You can check the rating on the power brick.) So, even the most basic 13-amp extension cord is sufficient.
they can, but if they don't get an answer (as they probably wouldn't if you were in the shower or otherwise occupied on the bed) they will think that nobody is inside
I was a nanny and I went to Aspen with the mother and son. She brought along her hairdresser. I was appalled in how slovenly they both were. Cigarette wrappers tossed on the floor. A couple times either in bathroom or tiled kitchen I found cigarette butts smashed on the floor. There were plenty of ash trays even on the bathroom counters. Her took over the 2nd bath that her son and I were used. Any case towels heaped on the floor because they took 2 showers a day at least. They would buy anything from furs, jewelry, perfume, apres ski wear, etc.boxes bags everywhere and more. I tried to tidy up before housekeeping came in. She and her friend were planning a cruise. Housekeeping would find her as a slob. Luckily they weren’t planning on taking me. The father of boy called me to find out what made me upset. I said being Aspen for 10 Days was great. I rarely did have any time off except the 1 hour and there. I liked her behavior. I said I about ready to quit. He sent generous New Year’s gift with please stay. The kid like me a lot. Never missed his mom when she was gone all day. 2 months later she decide to change my payment which was weekly to a new salary paid monthly plus I would be doing all housekeeping. She had fired the housekeeper. Small fortune was dropped in Aspen and ex husband paid for everything furs, jewelry. No respect. As of Jan 1 she was going on a monthly amount from her X. She wanted to keep shopping every day Beverly Hills. Bands continued on returning to LA. You right people can be such pigs. We always tried to make sure we weren’t causing housekeeping extra work.
@@emmib1388 yes I did as soon as she was telling me about I was going to get paid plus all the other changes inks it was going to get to get worse. Once he ex was not going to pay for everything she and had to live on a budget a very generous one but it had limits to it what she could spend she tried to limit what she thought she could live without or change the expenses. The agency I went through to get the job was un happy because this lady wanted her money back after I left. The agency wasn’t happy that I quit. They finally I got her Asian girl at much lower salary I guess. That was so absorbed it herself and trying to live like she did with her x. She was always calling her -x about money could pay more monthly. She wasn’t able to stop her shopping and spend what she wanted.with no limits. She almost went out every night. Yes sad for her son. I suspect she was a gold-digger from the start. Had a child so as to secure that perfect lifestyle. I am not sure what the particulars for the divorce were. That was a long time ago. I had another job nannying for a few years before becoming a teacher 27 years.
Like your friend I learned the hard way about showering with the curtains open. We were in Nassau, it was noon and there were no ships docked next to us. When I got out there was a ship there. OOPS! LOL
Just to add a bit on what you said, many of those things could get you kicked out of the ship at the next port (you have to get back home on your own) and banned for cruising on that cruise line for life.
Tampons etc should not be you flushed in the toilet even on land. Mini bars should all come with a permanent sticker stating anything taken from this an extra fee would be incurred.
I blinked when you said "...smoking on their vapes like dummies...", and then I realized you were meaning the things babies suck on...which I know as pacifiers. You weren't just saying the vapers were stupid! :)
That's that. I've been watching a bunch of cruising videos because I wanted to take a cruise but if I can't smoke on my balcony forget about it. That's just crazy. Rather than banning it why not make is safer by providing a safe ashtray and explaining the rules. For heaven's sake people smoked on cruise ships for 150 years without burning down every ship. For the prices you have to pay for a cruise you should at least have smoking rooms and you should be able to smoke on your private balcony.
That is interesting... No extension cords... Balcony door for the vortex must be so horrible for the delivery guy with your food tray! lol! Clothes on the balcony, Nobody brings clothes pegs?
I accidentally opened the cabin door while the balcony door was opened. It didn’t go well!!! 😂 A full cup of hot cocoa flew from one side of the cabin to the other. It was a mess! That vortex is no joke!
Thanks for the note on music. We had a group on our last cruise that played their music all day. It wasn't loud, but it kept us off our balcony! And....nice magnetic clips! Hee-hee-hee!
It didn't. It is the interview with Chris ("This Guy Lives on the Cruise Ship"), that was up by mistake (too early) last month for about 30 minutes, but then was available just this past Wed. 😀 So, while it says it was from last month, most just got to see it a few days ago. Everyone clicks the mouse / trackpad at the wrong moment sometimes. ha ha And, being on a moving ship, etc., or balancing a laptop on your lap in a cafe, etc., it ain't easy. 😀
It's good to hear how Crew members see, feel, and see. So many passengers lose all common sense when on vacation...that is one reason I keep away from CCL. twz
A couple of dumb hints--remember to remove the "do not disturb" if you have ordered room service, etc. Most lines will not knock, no matter what, if that sign or light is on. Your air conditioning will not work on some lines unless your balcony door is not only closed, but also locked. And remember that, depending on the design of the ship and your cabin, people on other decks may be able to see what's happening on your cabin. Many ships do not have ANY outlets in the bathrooms--you'll need to bring a rechargeable shaver, water pik, electric toothbrush, etc. and will do your hair at the mirror on the desk where there is an outlet.
The extension lead issue needs to be addressed by the cruise line updating their electrical cables to match the modern day or else have the limitations in all their advertising. Also don't sell products that need to be used next to a mirror if you don't offer a power point next to the mirror. I can understand all the rest especially the do not disturb sign.
Using an extension cord with one device - such as a hair dryer - doesn't change anything. The problem is when people use a power strip to which are connected multiple devices. Otherwise, good tips. Thank you.
Please simply accept their rules, it IS for safety reasons, not in any way designed to complicate your life, but rather to save your life! Unless you've worked on a ship (especially older ones), you may not be aware of the voltage issues on-board, etc. as well as the threat of fire is the NUMBER ONE safety concern of all crew! Please just follow the rules.
Specific to Virgin Voyages. A pro tip my friend gave me when we sailed. The pool deck bathrooms are two-way glass so if you can see them, they can see you using the toilet.
Hi Lucy, from the thumbnail, I guessed You would include: Do not dye Your hair in a bright color which could dilute to the shower, towels or pillow. And do not bring stinky food or fruits like durian to Your cabin. But this is the same for accommodations on land. Best regards, Ralf
😁 I remember Emma recounted getting an eyeful of someone on an opposite ship. As far as sitting on the balconies people not only do stupid things when they're drunk they do stupid things when they're sober as well
a relative famously indulged on a trip and called home (long distance) because he cannot find his way to his vacation room. Now we put a card in his pockets that says "my name is Fred. Return me to room X, building x. Thank you".

Thanks Lucy, OMG Lucy we were in Alaska with our blinds open, in the Fjord and in a romantic moment and would you know, guy came buy to clean outside window! No advanced warning it was so embarrassing. Darn people with a baby kept flushing a diaper in the toilet, they plugged the line several times! What a mess Costa still allows smoking on balcony.
@@casiopea1107 you are correct. Only ferrous metals work with magnets. So you're saying that if I stick a piece of steel on the wall it will stick? Not a magnet.
I can't see where a single outlet extension cord of reasonable length (say 6 feet) would change the voltage, or cause a voltage drop or noticably increase resistance. I think the problem comes when you have a power bar or multi-outlet extension, where the increased current draw could conceivably cause a problem. Ships need to post potential problems with this near their outlets. I think anyone conversant with electricity would know that a single outlet extension cord would cause no overcharge or current drop or backfeed on the line; in which case it also needs to be stated somewhere in the cabin that using an extension for a CPAP machine or a single medical device of standard current draw would be permissible.
Theoretically, extension cord may be too thin to handle the current that your device will try to draw, especially if you bought a cord in a country with 220V, and stick it into 110 V outlet.
She bought it at a thrift sale in Italy years ago, she liked it and likes the fit/feel...but didn't know the Vols teams. 😀 It really is a small world out there!
Frank, the cruise line can provide you with adequate / proper cordage for a medical device. If you haven't worked on-board a ship (particularly an older one) you may not be aware of the variations in voltages that can occur, and if there is a low-voltage situation, you could have excess current draw ---- causing overheating of wiring/plugs, etc. ---- which is a fire hazard! (this is also why irons, steamers, etc. are provided upon request, but otherwise not allowed.....trust me, fire on a ship is the #1 cause of injury/death and is to be avoided at all costs!) Also, most cabin hosts will immediately disconnect any extension cords in your cabin, and security or engineering office would come down and remove them (probably with a stern warning)....so, this is a big No-No! Hope this helps?
@@captainjohn49 I think an equitable agreement is for them to provide some extension cord with a breaker on request. I wonder if every cabin has a 15 A breaker?
Ok... You (P&O) sold hair straighteners on board and honestly believed people wouldn't use them during the cruise? That's about as well planned as leaving ashtrays with matches and "do not use" signs in the room and expecting people not to smoke.
@@thoughtengine Yes, depending on the ship and its electrical system, some old/non-compliant cords have caused problems with overheating, etc. Fire on-board is EXTREMELY SERIOUS and no member of the crew will allow anyone to jeopardize the safety of the ship. Please just follow the simple rules and have fun.
Hehe my daughter loves her rap, good ole Eminem, Tupac etc she used to take a portable speaker with her every where she went and have em blaring from the speakers as we walked down the st. The town folk hated it hehe but she didn't care lol
