What’s going on guys and welcome back to the channel! In 1998, a roller coaster opened that would pave the way for its model, and strike the world with one of the newest and most innovative concepts yet. Having experienced quite a few of them myself, I have to say the model is great, and I do enjoy most of my rides on them. That said, today I want to focus on the one that started it all, and give you a brief history of its design as well as installation. With a drop nearly double its height that reaches nearly 90 degrees, today’s coaster has been deemed one of the most photogenic coasters in the world, and remains an icon for its park and the coaster community. I think it’s great, and believe it definitely deserves some credit on top of a pretty cool history! So what is it? And where did it come from? This is the story, of Alton Towers, Oblivion! 💥🎢

This coaster is so underrated. Diving into a hole that doesn’t appear you’re gonna fit through with the force of what feels like as spaceship then into mist with a noise you wouldn’t believe reverberating around the entire x-sector. It’s honestly breathtaking.

Thing is with Oblivion, it is the best dive coaster in the world when it comes to the execution of the "vertical" drop element. Of the Dive coasters I've done, Oblivion has always been the best at creating that feeling of dread as you approach the crest of the drop. The amount of the drop that's in the tunnel also gives it a greater sense of speed. Even more so than the taller and faster ones like Sheikra or Griffon.

The theme is easily what makes this ride. It’s not overly detailed but it captures its Orwellian ascetic perfectly. The lord of darkness is easily my favourite Queueline video, a perfectly acted role that fills me with fear every time. Basically this rides theme is the smilers edgier 90s older brother. Yeah… the rides also fine. No real notes. It’s basically acting as Altons drop tower! It’s also the fastest ride in the park, faster than the Hydraulic launch!

Alton Towers is my home park, and I go there all the time. Oblivion is a MUST DO everytime I visit! Its very intense, especially when you even out in the tunnel. It may be short but my god this thing packs a punch!

It's interesting that nobody else has ever done this with a B&M dive (make the dive go into a deep, deep hole in the ground) though it was the situation that it was originally designed for. For Alton Towers it was one of their ingenious ways to deal with the strict height limits they are legally required to observe. They can't build up, so they build down. I suppose that if you don't have to do that, you won't be motivated to spend the money.

Oblivion has to be my top 3 favourite rides at Alton Towers. With Nemesis being my all time favourite ride. I dont know why, but there is something special just looking into that hole and then being engulfed by the darkness . Oblivion is a 8/10 for me. DONT... LOOK... DOWN...

Whenever I go to Alton Trousers, I try and ride Oblivion first - it's a great wake up ride, and usually a short queue line for a first ride as everyone rushes to the other latest and greatest coasters. Nice video, thanks!

Oblivion is the scariest dive coaster I have ever ridden. The reason for this is because you have no idea what goes on inside that ginormous tunnel and it’s terrifying being up there staring into nothingness. The drop feels like forever, and it’s different to Yukon Striker or Valravn in that in both of those the ride is drop and then slow inversion into MCBR and then more slow inversions. Oblivion is down, up, down a bit and back up into brakes. It never loses speed or the sense of fear. It’s honestly one of the only rollercoasters that still scare me to this day.

I think it’s great. It does the suspense of the drop and the spectacle of hanging over the edge better than any other dive coaster in my book. And it’s hard to beat just how cool entering a tunnel at a vertical angle is.

Oblivion is a fantastic piece of theatre, from walking up to it and seeing the drop to the videos in the queue hyping it up it's all about building tension and telease. I just wish Alton Towers would refurbish the queue theming and repaint the track.

Oblivion is my No 3 at towers, with nemesis being number 1 and smiler number 2. I haven't ridden any other dive coasters yet, but I think that their label as 'one trick ponies' makes oblivion seem better than them, cause it does it's trick better than all the others (assuming they feel the same, and they look like they do) and then is over and often has a very short line. Last time I went (Nov 6 2022) Oblivion was the shortest wait of the day if you don't count smiler using single rider, making it easy to re ride

Obviously in the grand scheme it really isn't that major but a really sad side effect of The Smiler crash was the park removing some of the preshow videos before this ride. They used to have ones casually mentioning a ride car completely disappearing and another questioning if the ride was safe. (Of course Alton needed to gain trust back after accident so i understand why) The current ones build you up enough but those ones made the anxiety of what's in the hole reach a new level

I’ve done 3 dive coasters; Oblivion, Krake (pronounced “Krakuh”) and Valravn. While I really liked all of them, and think Valravn particularly gets too much hate, Oblivion still has the best drop in my opinion. The main difference being that you still feel like you’re dropping vertically when you reach GROUND LEVEL. The rush of the tunnel as you pull out of the drop over 100 feet underground has to be experienced in person.
@brenonymouscoasterdesign6193
You need to do Kumali at Flamingo Land - it is a custom designed (cloned once in China) SLC but it is super smooth and a great ride. Nobody knows about it outside of UK enthusiasts, but in my opinion it pulls the same forces and smoothness of Black Mamba at Phantasialand. The same could be said for most of their thrill coasters.

My Home Park ❤ Its short by todays standards, but for locals, we have a special love for it, and still know so many people that wouldn't go on so it definitely holds up that fear factor. it should be coming up for a re-track in the coming years as the other B&M in the park is currently getting. personally, i think it could do with one more element added before the break run, just to lengthen it out just a bit more.

You said it is claiming to be the worlds first vertical drop coaster and you also said the angles only reaches 87.5 degrees but that is according to two recourses online but according to Alton Towers its marketed as the world first vertical drop coaster and other sources say so too and you also have to think of when it opened too. It opened on the 14th march 1998 and that was a big year for Alton Towers, getting a new land and a new ride getting rid of fantasy world and retheming it to x sector getting rid of the old fantasy world rides and i would like to believe that Alton Tower wanted to build the ride higher but because of the tree line and the height restrictions the park have they had to build down like they did with other rides and they could only build down so much with oblivion

I wanted to ride this so much when I was a kid. I didn't end up making the trip until I was in my mid 20's and... the disappointment. While I understand it's a bit of coaster history, I was thoroughly unimpressed. I had a friend watch me on it and on the second ride I apparently looked rather disgruntled and bored. Even in the photo. Perhaps I, too, have been on one too many coasters to appreciate Oblivion

I don’t think oblivion should be judged as a complete coaster, it should be judged as a drop. Since it’s drop is incredible it is a really good ride for what it’s trying to be. It’s not trying to be a long ride with loads of elements, it’s trying to be a good drop which it succeeds at

Oblivion is too short definitely but it’s always worth a ride if the queue’s less than 20mins. Diving into a steaming pit is the highlight of the ride so that box gets checked, especially off ride, but it’s in need of refurbishment or replacement imo

The problem with all "world firsts" is that they age quite quickly. All divers form the last 15/20 years have had more elements and inversions. Just progression. An intense ride, but not one I'd queue up for too long any more.

There's plenty of speed to extend this with a few more elements, maybe a cutback and zero g roll.

How is the tricks wait time in the queue? It looks fun but if if I waited more than 35 minutes I would probably feel like it was not worth it given however short the ride is.

@me-myself-i787 Год назад
It's always one of the shortest lines in the park, not much longer than Spinball Whizzer. Last time I went, it was only around 20 minutes. The Smiler, in the same area, was 2 hours long. It is a very high capacity ride. If Merlin ran all 6 trains, it would have a capacity of 1800 riders per hour, the highest in the park. However, because it's not very popular and doesn't get long lines anyway, they only run 4 trains. Although I'm sure it was more popular when it opened. Back then, the only other major rollercoaster at Alton Towers was Nemesis.
@NeonTrapperKeeper
@NeonTrapperKeeper Год назад
Thanks for the details. At 20 minutes wait time, I would definitely do multiple rides on it then. Hope they keep the ride for a long time. Every park needs a thrill ride without the long waits. Plus this is a classic. Good stuff.
