After many years of seeing these machines around. I picked one up after waiting a few years. But was it everything I wanted out of such a machine?

My grandfather recently passed and he was the one who introduced me to computers as a boy with the Apple 2. During Christmas I realized he had a Dell Inspiron 8600. My grandmother told me to take it no problem. %Windows XP. I was able to install rebel Assualt 2 and it plays great. I ordered GTA vice city and Die Hard Nagatomi Plaza. Great video.

Sorry to hear about your Grandfather, sounds like he had a bit of a computer passion there! It's quite a good laptop for such gaming, glad you liked the video and got some use out of the older machine!

Unbelievable high resolution for a PentiumIII Notebook. Awesome!

Yeah insane resolution for the time! Windows 9x is rather small at that screen size haha

To anyone struggling with the trackpoint making the cursor freak out, install the dell synaptics driver and disable it. That way you keep the touchpad functionality without the cursor going wild

Apologies for the slow reply! Joys of life getting in the way. Yeahh I've had to do that trick on a few Toshiba laptops as well! Fun and games

Great game choice. I had a laptop with very similar specs around the same time and played most of the same games!

Thanks man! Trying to keep it somewhat period correct. You must have loved having that sort of power and being able to carry it with you back in the day

I had an 8100 brand new back in 2001 with Windows Xp Home. It was USB 1.0. Mine was a lemon, but many people swore by them. In the span of three years my hardrive failed, the network card failed, the keyboard paint wore off from normal typing use, and the screen backlight died.
@thesmokingcap
@thesmokingcap 2 года назад
Oh really? That's a shame as they're not the cheapest machines. Good old quality control haha. Sounds like it died bit by bit on you. I'm still surprised that this one worked at all

I always thought those palm rests were padded too!
@thesmokingcap
@thesmokingcap 3 года назад
Yeah I always thought they were soft rubber or something. Different build quality for sure than the ol thinkpads. I’m not sure if other dell laptops around the same period are like this
@TechMadeEasyUK

@@thesmokingcap its an odd period where OEMs were all trying to get costs as low as possible. Hence why so many have failed because of cheap, dodgy capacitors!

The crazy thing is I have one of these stacked within a pile of other laptops. It worked nearly a decade ago when I bought it on eBay. Today... who knows.

You should get it out and fired up! They make for a decent windows 2000 machine as well. I've dual booted mine

the ess maestro has dos drivers, you have to get it from the vxd driver package which you can from vogons. the OPL3 on the card is emulated though and sounds pretty bad.
@thesmokingcap
@thesmokingcap 2 года назад
Ahhh I see, that sound blaster emulation can be hit or miss. I haven't used this machine much but so far the P4 Toshiba Tecra I fixed seems to run games better

I found one a recycler but the screen was broke and needed the hardrive adapter so bought a cheap donor and it happened to have the gf2 16 mb. The other had a ati 32 mb. I need to benchmark the ati again to see which is better. Ive tried the dos driver and while it detects the maestro sound blaster does not produce sound. Seems like something isnt hooked in hardware. I also bought a harddrive caddy for a 120 gb drive with sate to ide adapter. I dual boot mine with 98/XP. Im leaning more to XP only with no DOS support.
@thesmokingcap
@thesmokingcap Год назад
Yeah sadly the plastics are rather brittle on these old laptops. The screens always seem to suffer the most. I haven't tried DOS gaming but is the SET BLASTER variable set in the autoexec file?

Great video! How have You solved scaling issues? In most of the games after install on my 8100 laptop the resolution is 800x600, even if I change it in game options to 1400x1050 is still 800x600.
@thesmokingcap
@thesmokingcap Год назад
Glad you enjoyed the video! No I never fixed the scaling issue sadly. It's due to this panel being such a high resolution. What game are you having issues with? It might not support such a high resolution.
