I took a sweet potato I got from the grocery store and soaked it in an ascorbic acid bath(crushed vitamin c tablets and water) in order to remove the coating they spray on it to prevent sprouting. I planted that big sweet potato, waited a month and harvested the slips from it and planted the slips. That was my initial reason to plant the big sweet potato.

Man this was right on time. I see my slips growing thinking I have some sweet potatoes for fall😂. I would have been so disappointed.

I've never had success with sweet potato slips. However, I did cut up my sweet potatoes and threw them all over the garden. I got massive orange sweet potatoes.

Being a Brit, I know very little about Sweet Potatoes outside of eating them, because we don't really have the weather to grow them here, or maybe the right variety... I don't know, but I certainly don't have the space. However, whilst planting the tuber may not be the way to actually get the Sweet Potatoes to grow themselves, I have to say that your box method is the best I've seen for getting slips. Even if I had to start them early in the house, I'd do it like that rather than the water method. I look forward to seeing your harvest.

Actually I've seen some very impressive harvests from some UK folks here on RU-vid! It can definitely be done, as long as you have 120 days or so with a daily average temperature around 65°F. If you don't get those temps naturally, you could try building a low tunnel out of some PVC pipes or hoop wires and some clear 6mil greenhouse plastic. It's amazing how quicky this heats up in our garden. Our spring starts out pretty cool, but it gets at least 20° or so warmer in the little tunnel I tossed together. And it shelters my white potatoes from our deluge rainfall, too!
@thenodiggardener
@thenodiggardener Год назад
@@joshuahoyer1279 Yeah, I have a friend who has had some success growing some in buckets in a greenhouse. I've just gone to have a look for anyone having better luck growing outside, and found a couple. One chap is a Zone up from me, being further South, but I noticed he also grows Yacon, which I grow too, and over winter, which it's not supposed to be able to do here. That's the beauty of gardening, it's not just the plants that can grow 😁
@joshuahoyer1279
@joshuahoyer1279 Год назад
@@thenodiggardener exactly! I have a few citrus in ground here, and we are probably a zone and a half cooler than the suggested zone 😂. Microclimates for the win!
@thenodiggardener
@thenodiggardener Год назад
@@joshuahoyer1279 That's cool that you have citrus growing like that. I like being able to test things out, and see if we push the zones a little. If ever I get more space I'll certainly give the sweet potatoes a go.

@joshuahoyer1279
@joshuahoyer1279 Год назад
Considering you also cut a bunch of slips off those, that's actually not a bad production! Not a lot of greenery to pull energy for storage. I bet if you gave them some food, left the vines alone and let them go out wild like the rest, they could have gotten a lot bigger. Especially since we usually start slips in relatively sterile, nutrient low medium, it's not too surprising that they're still pretty little overall. I still agree that we could definitely plant slips 100%. But if we kept our propagating box and gave it some food, that's even a little more harvest than what we would have gotten by just tossing this box aside once we maxed out our planting beds.

I drunk planted a sweet potato like that last year and nope, didn't get a thing. I did slips this year though, not ready to harvest yet but they look pretty good from above ground, it's killing me to know what's down there in the dirt, lol.

I'm guessing here, but might the sweet potatoes be growing such small new potatoes because they still have the big ones attached, and the plant prioritizes keeping the big one growing? The entire point of the fruit for the plant is to store energy and nutrients so it can survive and spread, so it would make sense to nourish the big starting one first and neglect smaller offspring deeper in the soil.

Outstanding educational video! That is the type of harvest you _happen upon_ in a *SHTF,* I'm MOVING but I understand the concept of VOLUNTEER plants type of situation NOT what should be DEPLOYED in a regular _'Gardening or Homesteading environment!'_ Thanks, young Brother for this one! Be blessed!

I’ve never planted sweet potatoes before because I thought I didn’t have enough room. You’ve shown me that all I need is a box and not a lot of room. I knew sweet potatoes were supposed to be grown from slips, but seeing the proof will help me to always remember that and that I shouldn’t waste my time experimenting. I can’t wait to see the harvest from the ones grown from slips next week.
