livinglegendsmusic.com dokken.net/ An exclusive series of Living Legends Music interviews with Don Dokken. Part 5 of 5. Recorded on July 21st, 2008 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Tampa, FL.
Thats Awesome!! Don you man for saying that so true!! As much as like several metal bands of the 90s, their gutarists couldnt play any lead. Even the bad bad hair bands of the 80s had a great guitarist, not to mention the great hair bands.
My 2 year old daughter listens to “alone again” with me in the car. She loves that song! She’s like “alone again without youuuuu” it’s the best thing I’ve ever heard. ❤️
That's cool as hell kid. Don't give up on it. Even when you've got no one to play with, keep writing songs and keep strumming away. No matter what. If you want to play music then do it because every other job will seem like shit and you'll wish you were playing music instead.
I have to say, it's nice to see a guy who says "i never did drugs, I just didn't get it". I thank the lord daily that I never fell into that path either because back then, access was easy to come by.
h WRONG>...he was completely and utterly hooked on oxycontin and all that for many many yrs. go to dean delray podcast with Don. he says it with his own mouth. never tried coke, but was a total pill junkie. in other words heroin opiate addict. did rehab and all that eventually.
One of the greatest live albums ever!!! For years I have been wanting it to be remastered and put out as a 2CD release because the single CD is missing some songs that were on the cassette tape. Luckily last year I found out that it has been remastered and released as a 2CD version from a label called Rock Candy and I ordered it immediately. It sounds phenomenal and it is finally the full concert. I also ended up buying the first four studio albums because they have also been remastered by Rock Candy and they also sound better than ever.
I have it on cassette. Up there with LOVE AFTER DEATH and TOKYO TAPES. Outstanding live recording, love Dokken. They dont get the love of SCORPIONS and MAIDEN, but they are special all the same.
Nice interview. I always liked Dokken. Discovered them by accident, because in Canada none of my friends listened to them. I took a chance and bought some of their tapes and loved them! Great to see Don still rokken!
This interview almost brought tears to my eyes. I'm always defending the new generation who are into stuff we grew up on against those of us who call the new generation posers. Such good music would be forgotten if it wasn't for the next generation.
Great interview....just watched all 5 parts,i've been a massive fan from 1983...still am.I remember seeing Dokken opening for Accept in Belfast around 85/86,what a gig that was.Don Dokken=Legend.
I am 61. I rocked thru the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000 u get it. My youngest son is 18. He comes to me with music and like he discovered something asks me if I ever heard of Dokken. LOL! He says the music now sucks so bad dad. You were so lucky! I said, no son, we are lucky. Good music lives forever.
it never ends as long as we say so.period.he will live forever in ROCK HISTORY.music has always changed, but not forgotten.i got the priveledge to see him and dokken at twin river casino, few years back, smoking took some voice away, but who am I to complain to see history and a LEGEND.peace
Exactly. But I did love hearing about the debauchery is gone and we're all cooking burgers arguing who's sauce is best back stage. I've been on the ground groping for keys too. I don't miss those days. ;)
I just watched all five clips straight. Very Cool Series! It was nice to see the man behind Dokken that band in the 80's that had its albums in rotation on me and my brothers' stereo when I was a kid. Thank you for posting.
Kudos to Don Dokken's daughter for scrapping the acute banality of N'sync and opting instead for the power and mystery of Tool. Good choice. It's a pleasure to see our friend Don still doing what he loves for a living. Interesting stories, and nice interview. Thanks for posting!
Wow, what a great interview with Don Dokken. He always seemed to be a nice guy even in the early days and fairly straight. He'll be 62 this year. But I never dreamed he suffered so much in his early life. I'm happy for him that his talent awarded him the success he deserved. Thanks for sharing.
listening to Dokken on Tape brings back memories... Cassettes being big in the early 80's then CDs killed it just like that.... Dokken along with Tesla are great 80s bands.... Don and crew inspired people whether he believes it or not....
Very interesting set of interviews. I'm class of 86, bought all of Dokken's cassette's (remember those) now he talks about how things have changed, I can certainly relate. but its all good
My kid is 6. He loves Dokken. Hes big on "Just got Lucky" & " Into the fire" its 2020, and theres a growing number of youths now discovering classic bands like Dokken, Zeppelin and Sabbath. Better late than never. Some of us like me- lived through that era and had a time of our lives
Dokken is still my all time favorite band.. Don is my vocal idol!! My kids love Dokken too! Their favorite song is Breaking the Chains, hehe. Its really cool to hear them sing something that I have loved so much through my lifetime. My mom loves it too, she once went to a concert and was sooo happy Don spit water on her.. Something we still tease her about. Lol!
Very cool and sincere interview! Don is a cool guy forsure glad the best music is still being discovered. Those days produced some great talent that is still being discovered by our youth thanks to guitar hero and the fact that great music never dies!!
fuck anymore of these great interviews with don dokken i can listen to him all day ,such an interesting & very smart individual ...well spoken & so down to earth, his story telling are so fascinating & precise he remembers events ,people & names & emotions he was going through, thats why he is hard to work with sometimes cause he's an absolute genius...he's a METAL living LEGEND nuff said.....
I only stumbled across Dokken (the band) on the iHeart Radio app on my phone a few months back in early 2019 when I was listening to Krokus, so I was instantly hooked. I really love the musical arrangements, from the song writing, instruments and vocals ... just absolutely top class. I never got into the US 'hair band' thing back in the 80s, because I never had access to music shops or radio that played that style, plus I had other interests those days here in Australia. In 1988 a ham radio friend in Russia posted me a Black Coffee album. When I heard Dokken for the first time a few months ago, I immediately thought that Dokken (and maybe George Lynch in particular) was a big influence on Dimitri Varshavsky from Black Coffee ... just a wild guess, so who knows. I like both bands.
Yeah....probably one of the best gigs I ever went to...Dokken had just released Under Lock And Key.....Accept had Russian Roulette out...great times...I feel old now ,LOL.
DOKKEN IS AND ALLWAYS WILL BE THE GREATEST METAL BAND EVER 80'S METAL RULEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PARTY ON DUDES!!!!!!!!!!! i am 53 and still ROCKEN WITH DOKKEN !!!!!!!!!!!! i have all there casettes and cd's and play them all the time
I played a show with Don last summer at Dakota Rock Fest. He does play arenas and large festivals. You know not of what you speak. I have photos with him and he is a great guy as long as I have known him. We first met in 1991 back in Redondo and I really am a nobody. Thanks Don for the great interview. I could listen for hours. You'll notice my name is kprokken. This is because when I first met him he autographed something for me with Keep Rockin' w/ Don Dokken.
I have been a huge massive fan of Dokken for over thirty years, but in the last five years I have become a bigger fan than ever before. For the longest time I only had the first four studio albums and all their live albums. Since five years ago I have since gotten all their studio albums that came out after Back For The Attack and I love them big time also. Dysfunctional, Erase The Slate, Broken Bones, and Lightning Strikes Again are my favorites from all the albums that came out after Back For The Attack. In the 80's two of my favorite bands were Dokken and Ratt, and for the longest time I loved Ratt more than Dokken. I still love Ratt alot, but in the past five years I have grown to love Dokken way more. I would love to see them live one more time and one more studio album. I know that Don is up there in age , so Dokken has very little time left as an active band and it would be great to see them one more time.
I'm more than certain I'm the 8 y/o he's talking about. Annie's concert venue off Kellogg Avenue south-east of Cincinnati. Pulled me on stage to finish singing Paris is Burning, fucking amazing I'm glad he somewhat remembers this, that's awesome lol
This guy sat with us in pendelton ore. He had a really screwed up sound man that night. But we sat and drank jack and cokes for hours. He really is a great guy!! I didnt even push the issue of music. He is just a neat guy to talk to. I saw im back in the ranch bowl. Along with my mentor Peter Baltes. Again cool guy.
Peter Baltes, long time bass player for Germany's Accept, if memory serves. :-) Always found Peter to be fascinating as a bass player. Bassists nearly always just seem to find a spot on stage and anchor themselves there. Peter, in contrast, seemed like he was on a mission, nearly every time I saw Accept in concert, to rack up more mileage onstage than pretty much anyone else in the band. Peter was what I would call the complete antithesis of your "typical" bass player. Crazy. I think someone once asked him if he had any idea how many miles he went onstage every night but I don't recall if he ever figured it out. But I remember thinking it had to be many miles because it seemed like he just never stopped. I can imagine him breaking pedometers if he ever used them just to try to calculate how far he actually did go every night.
