A friend’s adult daughter, who had psychological problems, went to the cabin she went to every summer as a kid, sat down without a coat and died of exposure. It was February. Over 20 years later, she still doesn’t believe it was suicide. A mother’s love is a powerful thing. Thank you, Dr Grande.

It depends on what the "psychological problems" means though because if she suffered from psychosis or dissociation it could potentially be due to that as well and be an accidental death due to mental illness as opposed to intentional suicide. Suicide by exposure is a pretty rare method to choose...
@jollyandwaylo

Being a person who had lots of suicidal thoughts when I was a young man, I can well believe someone would go to a place they felt safe or had happier memories, not intending to commit suicide but not caring either way. Sitting somewhere and getting lost in the feeling of hopelessness and just not going inside to get warm.

This is an interesting analysis of the death of Don Kemp, who happened to be my 1965 class president at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County, Maryland. I knew him personally, went to a graduation party at his house and thought he was an all around nice guy without any obvious issues. He struck me as the type of person who could talk, befriend or relate to anyone. I was sad and surprised when I heard about his death many years later.

Post-concussive injuries following an auto accident (or long boxing or football career) are a frequently overlooked and poorly understood trigger for cognitive decline in previously high functioning individuals. If the triggering auto wreck had happened today, Don may have received the desperately needed support and therapies for rehabilitation. This could have prevented his premature death and the unnecessary heartache experienced by his mother and friends, and most importantly, this insensitive video. I'm sorry for your loss and hope Don can be remembered by your school in a more sensitive way than Dr. Grande's cold and ill-informed analysis here.

Family members of suicide victims, or victims of freak accidents, often do not believe the most logical explanation of what happened and would see every tiny detail as proof that something sketchy happened to their loved one. The phone call from that number could also be explained by someone patching into that man's phone lines. There was another case I heard of when I lived in Denver that involved a kidnapping & the kidnapper called the parents every year on the anniversary. A few times it was proven that's how he did it, by patching into the phone lines at the pole.

He stayed in the barn for shelter and was transported in time and space to the Virginia barn where John Wilkes Boothe was ultimately shot and killed in 1865. There in the burning barn Mr. Kemp witnessed the last moments of Lincoln's assassin but he himself succumbed to the conflagration and was transported back, nearby on the prairie where they found his remains. Perhaps this is a way Don Kemp would have preferred to go? Cue Twilight Zone music. Happy Halloween season everybody.

I think it’s especially odd that he left his car still running, with the door open and unconcealed along a road. Authorities are convinced he was alone because of the state of his car. The state of the car advertises his presence. Yet finding his body in a previously searched location indicates he was concealing himself or someone else was concealing him. I have done tons of road trips in tightly filled vehicles. It’s amazing how things can be rearranged. I’m not sure who made the determination that a person couldn’t have fit inside. Even if he couldn’t have fit a person in his car, that doesn’t mean he didn’t pull over for another person. But I think it would be telling to know more about those phone calls to his friend Judy. What was the technology back then? Could phone numbers be spoofed? Or was it just a wrong number and a coincidence? But, of course, it’s possible that Don was at that man’s house for awhile then later dumped. But were it not for those phone calls, everything would point to a delusional episode. Especially a paranoid delusion.

In an open area like that you'd know people, a plane, and a number of official govt. cars are looking for you. If you're already feeling paranoid, you're now VERY paranoid.

Yeah, agreed. I've never been in the USA so am unfamiliar with the local climate, and I don't know if the barn photo was taken on the day the police were searching, but the narrative sounds as though his footprints were followed in continuous snow. If not, at least it sounds as though they were quite easy to follow, sooo... He walked backwards in his own footprints all the way back to his Blazer? He made deliberately heavy footprints all the way to the barn, reversed and at some point managed to lightly tiptoe away so as to not leave a diverging trail? Or more likely he was acting in a manner consistent with paranoia and successfully concealed himself from a less than thorough search attempt?

Dr. Grande, your analysis is definitely more intriguing than 'an immerging cult leader'. Stop! You make me spew my Polar Seltzer across my studio, LOL!

Dr. Grande. . . dude you are undefeated. I wish I could know you. My therapist teaches me to beware of transference, and I get that and understand. But Sir. You rule!!!! I would pay huge $$$$ just to have a counseling session with you. :) Blessings and all the luck.

I used to work in that area a few years before his disappearance. That spot is about as isolated as you can get. Ranches are measured in square miles, not acres. You could walk all day in there and not see another human being.

Sooooo easy to get into trouble in the elements...It can be fairly warm out,but if you get damp you're done.

This story reminds me of the recent Netflix documentary of an East Indian family, nice, well educated and loving people, an eleven multi generational family living together, who the neighbors found hanging together, all dead. This took place in Bangladore, India. A massive investigation ensued, and the answers were found in their diaries.

Please analyze the mental health and personality factors in the James Oliver Huberty case (the San Ysidro McDonald's massacre shooter). P.S. - Or in the Gian Luigi Ferri case, a mass shooter who was he himself a former mental health operator.

Great analysis of an unfortunate end of someone who wondered into mental illness after a traumatic car accident. I especially appreciate your courage, Dr. Grande, of saying some hard truths, that possibly could be so, regarding the victim (with mental issues). And the distinction between "unsolved" and "unsolvable" in Kim K's mystery regarding her enormous self confidence!

This was a very interesting case, Dr Grande. There are several theories, but I suppose the simplest explanation is the correct one, that Mr Kemp died from exposure. The phone calls are a mystery which muddy the waters. I'm delighted to say that I have never voluntarily watched any TV show featuring Kim Kardashian or the Kardashian family.

Donald may have broken into or opened Mark’s trailer when Mark was not there and made the calls in a confused or delusional state and left the trailer, waiting and watching to see when Mark left again to repeat the call at a later time. And then he gave up after a few attempts.
