LaPre was, hands down, the most ruthlessly shameless and talented bottom-feeding huckster in the history of sales. He could lie about anything and make money. I have a bit of respect for that.
Instead of buying that damn list and making phone calls all day long, why not just place tiny classified ads in newspapers all over the country and let the people find YOU?
I know people are generally good, at least that's what I believe, but if a stranger claims to want to help you make money, yeah, that's some bullius crappius.
Can't give this guy enough credit. The FTC should have been thrown in jail. A guy like Don Lapre stimulates an economy and gives people hope and motivation. RIP.
@@georgiabigfoot Agreed. There's probably so many great ways out there to make $50,000 per week from a one bedroom apartment, if only there were more good businessmen out there willing to showcase their secrets.
One of the greatest Americans! every college kid should spend time learning his cadence, direct speaking approach and delivery. we would create a generation of straightforward people who know how to communicate, vs the millennial mush mouths we have now...
@@wulfbak Just because people can't follow the program and learn the knowledge and learn to apply it, doesn't mean that it's a scam, it means they are lazy
He sold bland, complex concepts and made millions with these infomercials. Nobody else did. Duped customers chalked it up as a small loss and forgot about it while he lived in luxery off our purchases. Until the FBI came calling. Coward.
My dad used to do EXACTLY what he's talking about and made good money doing it. He used to track down the people who were owed money and got paid to get their money to them. This was totally legit!
@@verybored3905 He just got the money for tv time. And got LLCs. I believe he just went to networks and no questions asked. Notice on informarcials they say we are not responsible for the views on the program. Witch they know if can be a scam. But all they care about is the money.
he slashed his own throat when he was in jail, before that he tried to cut his arteries in his groin, while he was hiding at a gym for a day and a half from the authorities.
wish the guy didn't kill himself. He was a great pitchman and I use to love his infomercials. He also had the casey kasam kind of voice. Anyone interested in marketing and promotion should just watch him. I liked him more than billy mays.
Charles Chavez But he wasn’t just a pitchman. He came up with these schemes and tricked people with crap products. Just like the fake gurus these days who get rich by offering “classes”.
You were paid out of the proceeds the homeowner received. The rip off was that thousands and thousands of people were paying $60 for this "business" so instead of a few hundred people pursuing this business and making a little money, you had thousands of people making next to nothing, if they made anything at all. Potential customers would receive hundreds of letters from people pursuing this and, if the potential customer figured out why they were due some money, none of the people sending letters would get anything. i doubt that most of the people that bought this material ever made a dime. Well, except Don Lapre selling his material made some money.
Don Lapre killed himself in jail after being indicted on fraud charges for all these scam businesses. Everything he touched is a scam. He was the human equivalent of Fyre Festival of the 90s.
One of the main charges against him was making outlandish, unsubstantiated claims for his products. But isn't that pretty much what all marketers do? mlm, gym equipment, makeup, all the crap on QVC - all made to sound better than it really is. Why doesn't the makers of ShamWow the magic cleaning cloth go to prison? This worthless stuff has been hawked for decades on tv.
I think part of it is because it's one thing to exaggerate how awesome a product is, it's another to defraud people by offering services that do not do what the sellers say they'll do. That's what ended up screwing Don Lapre. Infomercials claiming ShamWow is the best damn cleaning cloth ever made are legal, provided it *does* clean. But if they claimed ShamWow can cure cancer, that'd be illegal.
There's a name for that. It's "puffery,"which is legally permissible. Saying that "Our hamburgers taste the best" is puffery because it can't be proved or disproved. Saying that "Our hamburgers are the healthiest" is fraud unless you can prove it.
