I watched an interview with Mr. Malarkey concerning his service in the war. You could see the emotion in his face and hear it in his voice. It lasted for the rest of his life. Think about this, most combat veterans lost a piece of their lives for the rest of their lives. How many people would sacrifice a piece of their lives for the sake of the country? There may be a few, but certainly not everyone. That is why we need to honor these men.

Dear Laurie Scott and other fans. In 1983 I received my Airborne Wings at Fort Bunning. There were several old gentlemen there pinning on our wings. The crew did not tell us who they were, but I do distinctly remember his face and the Gold Stars on his wings and White hair. He pinned on my wings, shock my hand and moved on to the next guy. The chain of command released us and I did not get a chance to find him again. Then Band of Brothers came out. I said that's him. Don Malarkey pinned on my wings.I went on to make Major, master Parachutist and commanded two companies as an Infantry officer. What a great life story he had.

Sadly we lost the war, but I will redeem us all. Guarantee if we took media clipping from today and went back in time, we'd side with the Germans and fight the Soviets. That's fucking guaranteed. Anyone who disagrees is uninformed, led down the wrong path. History is written by the victors. One sided, biased history is then taught.

Over seven decades had passed since the Battle of Bastogne. The heroes of the 101st, including Easy Company, saved the western front by holding off the Germans. Had the Germans taken Bastogne early on, they would've made it to Antwerp, and had their second Dunkirk. Actually, winning at Bastogne meant a US presence in post-war Europe, and thus, saved Europe from Soviet domination. That is so because, even had the Germans won the Battle of the Bulge, it would not have stop the Soviet hordes from overrunning Europe. For these reasons, the importance of what the 101st and Easy Company did in December 1944 simply cannot be overstated. They ensured freedom and democracy for hundreds of millions of people. Truly, the greatest generation.

Patton knew exactly what he was talking about - and they wanted him silenced as soon as possible. If you read Ambrose's biography of General Eisenhower, it's hard not to think Patton was not only the best war general in the Army, by far, but had the best understanding of Russia's intentions. He was constantly being undermined by the bigger brass.

Tech. Sgt. Donald Malarkey passed from this life into the next in September 2017. We are all far richer, his having walked among us, and now, we all stand poorer, his having left this life for a much deserved rest. That said, those of us who serve and who have served are both encouraged and enriched by his exemplary life and service. R.I.P., and I would say "thank you," but those words fail as miserably inadequate. We love you, Don.

If theres any chance you could thank him for me, I would very much appreciate it! I read one of the comments where someone said he was a special man. As the son of a WWII Vet who was critically wounded in combat, I can say they were all special. They all put the lives on hold to go and fight an enemy. That was a special time in history and I doubt we would ever rise to the level of courage and dedication like our country did back then. The men and women, no doubt, but our government. No.

My Mom, Mary Hibbit , dated Don briefly at the University of Oregon in 1946. Don then married Irene, a childhood friend of my Mom in Portland, and a Gamma Phi sorority sister. They were friends until Irene died, and then Don died in 2018. I became a World War 11 “ junkie” in the 80’s. In the mid 90’s my Mom said to me,” Have you read the book , “Band of Brothers?” I said I had NOT gotten to it. She said,” Don Malarkey, a guy I dated before I met your father at Oregon, is in it. I went to lunch with his wife Irene a couple weeks ago, and she said there were some guys over at the house talking with Don about a movie.” That movie was “ Saving Private Ryan”, based on a story Don brought up about him and Skip around D-Day. Skip, his best friend, was killed during the Battle of the Bulge.

not necessarily a fair statement. Don and his pals would most likely have lived good, un-remarkable lives, if not for the war. "heroes" are not easily identifiable, until "the time comes". I would like to think, and hope that many of my generation would rise to the occasion, if absolutely needed. The guys that stormed the cockpit and brought down the last terrorist-jet on 9/11, come to mind.

This is just wonderful. I must admit that the country music piece doesn't sound familiar ! I can't believe I missed out on it's existance. It's another tribute to the Greatest Generation that would be great for my collection. One of my uncles was an aircrew radioman with the 8th AAF.My Dad would never talk about his experiences in the ETO, and the 18 surviving letters and photographs of him and his buddy's were kept safely hidden for decades. His first taste of combat was with a new infantry squad sent up to the line about the 5th of January 1945 we think. He was assigned to the occupation forces after the surrender. He often had a nightmare about a tank that killed one of his best friends. Mom and one of my uncles told us about it later in their lives. That horrible side effect of war didn't stop until the day I was born in 1956.

Dear Mr. Russel, My paternal grandfather served as a Marine infantry officer in WWII and Korea. He fought at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Okinawa, Inchon, and the Chosin. Grandpa never spoke of his service or his experiences. Until I was about 12 years old, I did not even know he had fought in two wars. I found out only when I went digging for fishing tackle in the deep recesses of a spare closet and there hung his Marine Corps "alpha" uniform, festooned with ribbons that, I realized later included the following: (1) Navy Cross; (3) Silver Stars; (2) Bronze Stars with "V" device; and not one, but (5) Purple Hearts. But still, he never spoke of his wartime experience until he spoke at my brother Jack's eulogy when Jackie was killed in the Beirut bombing of 1/8's BLT HQ in October 1983. And then, he spoke sparingly. It was only after I won my own Marine officer commission, and went into battle (First Gulf War) and lost two Marines. I accompanied one's remains home. Despondent after the burial and having to hand Sgt. White's weeping mother a folded flag (feeling responsible for his death and suffering a unhealthy amount of survivor's guilt), I visited grandpa. He knew I'd been in combat and knew I'd lost Marines. I got out of the car, he ran down the driveway, hugged my neck and quietly wept. Only THEN did he go into any detail about the "bad dreams" he'd have when Jackie and I would spend our summers with him and grandma. What those men faced, suffered, and conquered in places like Tarawa and Okinawa cannot be described. I asked him why he wept. He told me that he wept for me because now, like him, I would carry the scars of war (also served in Iraq and Afghanistan) for the rest of my days. The bad dreams, self-recriminations, and survivors' guilt would follow both him and me to the grave. Of himself, he was prophetic. The night before grandpa passed, I sat in his hospital room in my dress blues and had a Marine Reserve unit offer-up their color guard. There, I sat, and the color guard stood, for grandpa's last 24 hrs or so of life. And that night, yes, even then, grandpa had a horrible dream nightmare the Chosin. And now, my own son serves with Marine infantry unit. For years, as an eager, zealous would-be warrior, my son would ask me about my own experiences. And I just couldn't recount them because to do so was to relive them. After his first combat deployment, he visited me. First words outa his mouth when he stepped outa the car were a tearful, "Dad, I'm sorry I bothered you all those years. Dad, now, I understand." Neither of us have ever spoken in detail to each other about our combat service. Now, it's just a quiet respectful understanding between warriors. I hope this long-winded account gives you some insight and context into why those of us who see the worst of combat just never speak of it. Over 60 years after grandpa went ashore at Tarawa, he still could not speak of it without his voice cracking and the tears slowly dipping down his face. Today, I simply do not and cannot speak of the more intense actions my Marines fought in places like Fallujah. It's heartening to remember their valor, but far too often, the price for their valor was their very lives. And that, is simply too much to recall.
