As with so many others who are now in their 40s...this song & movie was a part of my childhood as well. Only ever had it on VHS copy that wore out from playing it.
Yes, I remember it on VHS too, was attracted by the cover but what a film! Sadly by the early 1990s only one of the many video shop in my town in Wales had it for rent still (it seemed to unfortunately be a commonly offloaded tape unlike it's similar cousin The Last Unicorn), and once that went around 1993-ish it was hard to get as the retail copy was deleted for many years.
My wife finally watched this movie for the first time and was quite impressed. I told her this movie has a lot of memories attached to it and was a big influence on the person I am today and she better get used to cause she's going to hear this song a lot when we have kids. I just about wore out the vhs my grandma taped a tv showing of this on from the 80s. They don't make films like this any more, Rakin and Bass damn near animated my childhood. The cast is something that I always point to as being amazing and was a great performance by all and though many of them are no longer with us I am happy they chose to be a part of such a in my opinion timeless if underrated classic.
@@kentchauvin2697 this comment could have been written by me. I'm 37 but this film still makes me believe in magic and makes me feel something deep down that nothing else does.
Absolutely love flight of dragons. Outside of my family I have never met a single person who has even heard of this film! Needless to say Iv introduced my children to it. I still at 36 love to watch this film and get lost in it
Its really difficult to find a good quality of this song. It is my understanding that only the original recording of this song exists because Don McLean did not like the first version and preferred a different one, but the studio kept this version, so he distanced himself from the song all together. You did a pretty good job overall restoring this, given the limitations of the available materials, but I do wish for a professional restoration by the studio, starting with the physical restoration of the source tapes.
I wish it too, but I'm afraid that studio is really don't care about Don McClean and his fans. Useless idea for keepers of original tapes cause it not brings big money(
Flight of dragons soar in the purple light In the sky or in my mind Flight of dragons sail past reality Leave illusion behind Is it the past I see When I look up to the heavens Believing in the magic That I know could never be I want to go where they are going Into the world they've been Can I open up my mind enough to see Flight of dragons, heavenly argosies Catch the wind, rise out of sight Flight of dragons, pilots of fantasy In the sky or in my mind Lyrics continue below
This was part of my childhood whenever I visited my family out of state...another world, and this fantasy was a part of those memories. I had actually created a boardgame from this game attempting to imitate the board game in the story when I was young...but I don't know where it went.
Goosebumps... I'm 30 years old and I saw this movie after my 12 years older brother. 20 years later, I remembered it and I've listened to it again, and the feeling this melody produces in me is indescribable, pure magic. There are no longer movies like this one nowadays...
Same friend, im 28 now. Old tape, but with awful translation... Now, after I rewatched this masterpiece with original sound, I realised that this animation is much deeper than I thought in my childhood.
Gorbash! Come! There was a time. Between the waning time of enchantment, and the dawning age of logic, when dragons flew the skies! Free and unencumbered! Look down there, Gorbash, my friend, on that troubled earth below us, confusion and chaos reigns. All mankind is facing an epic choice; a world of magic, or a world of science. Which will it be? Flight of dragons, soar in the purple light. In the sky, or in my mind? Flight of dragons, sail past reality. Leave illusion behind. Is it the past i see, when i look up to the heavens, believing in the magic, that i know could never be? I want to go, where they are going, into the world they've been. Can i open up my mind enough to see? - Flight or dragons. Heavently argosies. Catch the wind, rise out of sight. Flight of dragons, pilots of fantasy. In the sky, or in my mind. Flight of Dragons...
It erks me this song would be awesome if it was twice as long. Add one more lyric and extend the ending. With that fade out kept but repeated something else. Or cut out the words and sound effects from the first part.
I came to know this movie today through tiktok... Though the visual was at that era but it was majestic, there is something that made my eyes teary and my heart trembles unexplainable but soothing...
I can vouch for this as Ive just received my Blu-Ray copy in the post. I may even consider purchasing a second copy in case anything happens to the first.
Copies are available but not necessarily studio release. The one I got was made from a vhs tape and the scene transitions suck, but it does have the full film.
@@Jeff-gj7ko I'm afraid so, it's in the film. Carolinus The Green Wizard Of Nature hints at it & the hero himself realises that at the end. I won't say anything else just in case you haven't seen the whole movie.
@@tricia5792 Yeah, I never quite understood how he 'denies' it. I mean, seeing is believing and if I was him, any doubt I might have would have been squashed long ago.
@Jeff-gj7ko It's the act of choosing one or the other that destroys the bad guy (plus knowledge of science). Sir Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld novels, writes at great length about the power of the act of choosing - read his books as they're very good. "Where this leads me there I choose to go, this I choose to do" - the character Tiffany Aching, a young witch in training, in the Discworld book Wintersmith.
