I've seen many interviews with Don, Jim, Dave and Noddy, and they always come across as top lads, no ego, no smug all-about-me image, just four great blokes.
Slade are one of the greatest Rock bands ever. Don's tragic accident robbed them of momentum at the peak of their powers. Rather than following the guidance of voices saying "replace Don and chase the dream", Noddy, Jimmy & Dave stayed true to their mate and put the band on hold til Don was ready again. How many other bands would do this?
Only the great ones. Scorpions waited for Klaus Meine to return to health (at least sort of) and Led Zeppelin even ended performing (again sort of) when Bonham died.
When Lou Gramm got a brain tumor, Foreigner dumped him. Lou was the voice of Foreigner, and now that he has regained his voice, he sings to his brother's band + friends.
My beatiful band. I was one of the lucky ones to go and see them when I was 14. Absolutely takes me back to my very happy years. Seeing them for the first time in over forty years has made me cry with affection for the band. I thank them for keeping going. Watching them in there autumn years has made me so happy. With the world in caouse with covid it's a great evening for me to have found these bids and interviews. Love to them all, one of your biggest fans Penny
Crikey, to see Don get emotional like that brought a tear to my eye. Slade were the first band I absolutely loved at the age of 8 back in 1971. I just purchased Jim Lea's double vinyl LP. I look forward to it immensely. God bless you Don Powell.
I wasn’t aware Don had been in a terrible accident. Being in Canada, I doubt the news travelled that far. Memory loss is a horrible thing. Mine is from anoxic brain damage from a surgical screwup, and I write notes just like Don does. My loss is nothing compared to Don’s, but I understand him from that perspective. He’s a very courageous man, and a wonderful drummer. I still listen to my Slade collection on a regular basis. Rock on, Don! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
Must have been hard for him, but he's done so well to come back from such injuries and memory loss to keep on SLADING! Love SLADE! 1 of the best rock bands of ANY era.
To me he was the guy who stood out in Slade - and made me want to be a drummer. Great guy, Great band ! Hope he’s doing good after the stroke he’s just suffered. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I remember an interview years ago with Little Richard where he answered a few daft questions by just saying 'I AM Little Richard' which was a brilliant answer, cos it was true!! Same for Slade, despite the accident and the later rows and all the fact remains that they were SLADE and that's all anyone needs to say. Real, proper rock band . Thanx for the memories, lads and sincere good wishes to Don, an awesome drummer if ever there was one.
Will always love Slade as they were my favourite band when I was 8-10 years old. All four members of the band were famous in their own way and I can remember Don Powell's crash being on the front page of the tabloid newspapers.
I have always been a huge fan of Slade. It was a great joy to meet Don Powell at Minehead, Butlins some years ago. A great guy, happy to chat and sign. I was in my first job when Don had the accident, it is touching to see how he reacts on here when talking about Angela (his girlfriend at the time). That time is so vivid, its in my scrapbook and I have 14, plus the singles and a good few LP's. Brillliant band who stood by Don when commercialism was at its height. If I recall....Frank Lea (Jimmy's brother) stood in for an odd gig or two.
I saw Slade on their come back tour. AND mannnnnn (I was rocking with this skin head in what might be called a mosh pit in today's parley) they rocked the concert hall front-to-back. Honestly they were the best live band I have ever seen. You got exactly what it said on the tin with Slade. Incidentally, coincidentally I bumped into Don Powell (maybe 2003 - I have the photos. I got down on my knees and thanked him before I got up and kissed him on the cheek. I dont do this!! Absolutely true.) and he told me that when they were touring Australia and the tour bus unfortunately hit a kangaroo. They stopped. Out of the bush came a local gentleman of original desendency and he had SLADE across his knuckles. Years later I met Don again (maybe 2019) and he confirmed the fabulous story.
Noddy Holder and Don Powell stayed at the Sheraton hotel in Edinburgh back in the 80s when I was a bartender there. They spent all evening sitting at the bar and having banter with the staff. Two great blokes and proper gentlemen.
Don Powell ... if you ever read this ... ??? ... In 1975 my late Dad took me to see Slade in Bristol Colston Hall ... and i was only 10 years old !!! ... It was within the same weeks that you launched "Thanks For The Memories" !!! ... You ran on the stage from the right with a giant packet of "Wrigleys Spearmint Gums" !!! ... I remember as if yesterday and your second song was "Far Far Away" and it was almost impossible to separate the fact that i was not listening just with headphones as the rendition was just so perfect !!! ... My poor dad felt faint and we had to leave after only 3 songs :-( ... But ???... Not only was the music great ... Noddy Holders loud confident voice when he spoke to the audience ... The color in the dress of your group on stage ... (everyone was in denims) LOL ... But you all were a "VERY VERY HIGH QUALITY GROUP OF GENTLEMEN" !!!!! ... Many Thanks Again !!!
Absolutely wonderful group.. wonderful real people.i hope they make their peace, and i say love and peace to all peoples,,don't hold grudges ,,forgive and forget, honestly life is to short, just like me, and I have had some sorrowful times and experiences, but these real honest Wolverhampton lads ,,gave a great deal of pleasure to us,and I still have there LPS ,memories , wonderful,,love and peace to everyone, help your neighbour and the stranger,it could be me, or Noddy ,Dave, don or Jim,, god bless,
Spent a bit of time with Don in the UK last December and he certainly is the most loveliest man, so is Dave who was so friendly. They seem surprised I flew from Australia to see 5 concerts in the UK but it was my lifetime dream to see them, to actually spend time with them was an added bonus. I'll die happy now.
@@colinfulton9988 Check online as I think every Christmas they do a tour. Don is always at the merchandise stall so you would definitely meet him. Good luck.
Shortly after his accident, I was in a restaurant with a friend on Finchley Road near Swiss Cottage and Don Walks in ,sits down and orders a meal.It seemed strange at the time to see him there.I didn't speak to him.I thought that he would probably rather be left alone.
This Man inspired me to play the drums. I was totally into listening to his playing, but I was so young that I didn’t know what to do and my parents wouldn’t let me have a drumkit 😊
I remember reading about Don been in that car accident that was terrible for him how sad although i wasn't a slade fan but i did like them i did have a few records of theirs in my record collection
I can’t believe that Dave Hill has now stopped him playing in the Slade band. He just sent an email to say he wasn’t needed anymore, absolute disgrace. All the best Don
Slade came to my salon not long after that terrible accident , Don was very withdrawn but I saw how supportive the rest of the group were “ true friendship “
For such a light weight forgettable programme, Matt Allwright does a great interview by actually allowing Don Powell to speak and not trivialising anything - good job from both of you. Thank goodness you cut Baddiel off when you did - Slade considered a bit of a comedy band???!!! Proof if ever needed that tv should just let minor celebs stick to their day-job. He's not a Pop/Rock Historian, he's not a musician, but they let these people hold forth as if they are an authority on everything. Far better to listen to younger generation of musicians to see how Slade influenced them.
Mark Anthony Wyatt The only way Baddiel could make me laugh if is he hurt himself badly..... probably says a lot about me, but Baddiel is a total c u next tuesday, one of these muppets that was hugged WAY too much as a child. His mammy told him he was fantastic and he knows shes right....
I would like to have heard what Baddiel said. I suspect he was going on to say about Slade's greatness despite the glam tag or talk about how great a live band they were. Shame it cuts off before he could qualify what he was saying. I didn't see the original programme so I don't know for sure. Can anyone recall instead of us all making our minds up from the beginning of a sentence that is cut off.
As a barman in Finchley Don had lost not only memory but also his taste buds, he used to ask me what he should drink, I'd usually pick wine, lovely guy
Does he remember that he used to live at thorn cottage ninfield rd near lunsford cross, north of sidley ,bexhill. east sussex, when my late father-in-law lived at thorn lodge farm next door, ? as the interview was at eastbourn pier not that far away
would've been good English fun to tell Don he also became a footballer and that he scored the winning goal in the FA cup that year, and kept it going for a while...
Dons mother used to work in Cambells chip shop in Bilston and her sister was mother to the girl I worked with at Halfords in Bilston.. When Don had his mini.. before the accident this was.. He came into Halfords and bought a new battery for it.. And he asked me if I would fit it for him. I looked out of the window and it was snowing quite hard so I said no mate we don't do that lol this was early 70s.. In the 80s Noddy holder came into the lawnmower repair shop in Bilston where I then worked and asked me to repair his mom's hedge trimmer which I did... I saw Dave Hill every day in 82 at new Cross hospital Wolverhampton cos his misses had a baby the same time my misses did... Oh and going back to the 70s our cleaning lady at Halfords was sister to dave hills mother.. Just thought I would share that with you all 😅
I'm so pleased he got married after looseing his girlfriend who he was, going to get married too and that the rest of slade surporting him through that terrible ordeal they are such a down to earth band that's what i like about them 4 honest genuine guys from Wolverhampton 👍a great band of the 70s
@@mikedoe6585 According to the news Don Powell received an email informing him he was sacked as the drummer of Dave Hill`s Slade and has formed his own band, Don Powell`s Slade.
@@mikedoe6585 Your welcome. I grew up with Slade in the 70`s and I live in Noddy`s home town Walsall. My only claim to fame was seeing Noddy in the 80`s in a pub called The Hansom Cab in Walsall. He was drinking a pint of Guinness with 2 very large body guards.
In a weird way the amnesia probably helped. He doesn't remember the accident and the horror of what happened to his fiance. I'm not saying it's all good of course it isn't. But I think I'd rather forget that tragedy than remember. But it affects his whole life so on the other hand it's shit. Kind of a mixed blessing I'd say
You were not about in the 70's ? The hair and clothes were all about having fun. Not really any different from new wave in the 80's. Or I guess the tattoos and piercings the rappers have these days. It's called style.
