Don Quixote was the first ballet I saw. I want to see it with my dad, who had no idea about ballet but came just for me. It was such a magical and lovely evening, this ballet will forever have a place in my heart as the first one I ever saw. Thank you guys for covering this ballet, you're amazing🩷🩷🩷
Don Q will always be that go to ballet for a Spanish love story and I'm so here for it. I can't even tell you how many times I would do that infamous Act I variation because it's just so fun and so energetic. However I will say out of all the acts, the last act happens to be my favorite by far. Idk why but I'm a sucker for a wedding and when he presents them both to the audience at the end gets me every time.
Thank you very much, ladies, for bringing us the different dance adaptations of this iconic work of world literature in such an informative, profound, and charming way. Ehm, but was there really a real horse on stage during a production? It seems that the incredibly diverse life of the author Miguel de Cervantes is reflected in the tragic figure of the brave Don Quixote. Interesting fact: Cervantes wrote part of this great work in prison - yes, he had some difficulties in life...
I really apriciate that the part of Rocinante (the horse) is cast with a real horse. Does it have its own choreograhy? Is it requiered to take part in class? For my taste there are too many bullfighters, but too few bulls. Just a couple of bulls would give a very dramatic flair.
Haha he does have to attend dress rehearsals to get used to the crowds and noises 😂 would be cool if they had a random cow on the stage like in Le Grand PDD 😂
Yeah- they have to be Specifically trained to be around the dancers and the sounds of the audience and the music. The person leading the horse in that production, also had to have training for that too. Used to volunteer at a horse farm that specializes in theraputic riding and I've lead a fair few horses in my day . 🐴 Hope this helps. 😇
There's actually a musical based on Don Quixote (called Man of La Mancha) that, while some changes are made, encapsulates the story really well! Sorry that's not ballet related but I saw Don Quixote and was like "MAN OF LA MANCHA MENTION????" It does cut many things, including (I believe) this episode.
I love😍"Don Q"! "Don Q" is ballet🔥! Thank you so much ladies for your comments! There's so many iconic scenes and dances in this ballet. My favorites are: The castanet variations for Kitri and Basilio in the marathon Act 1 pas de deux, Kitri's first entrance and Espada the Matador and his cape in Act 1; Amour's variation, (as danced by Evgenia Obraztsova - the best Amour EVER🥳💯💥), Natalia Dudinskaya's variation which only Victoria Tereshkina dances at the Mariinsky in Act 2; the Fandango, Grand Pas Espagnole and Wedding pas de deux in Act 3. Which company owns "Don Q?" I'd have to say the Bolshoi. They did it first and they do it best.
Pirouettes from fifth 😵 😵 soooooooooo hard! Thanks for the analysis! I’ve seen the ballet but had *zero* idea what was going on 😆 Kimin Kim 💕💕💕💕 So very very very amazing 🥰😍😍🥰🥰
i saw don quixote as an opera a while ago and the stage was very simple with the orchestra and singers on stage in a sort of cozy setting, but there was a big table of candies with a trumpet on it too, and they used it to create the landscape don quixote explores in his adventure!! there were also puppey dolls for when don quixote rescues a moor princess (i think??) its obviously miles away from a ballet stage but its such a big memory i have, and id love to see the ballet!!
This ballet is pure joy. I go see it every year in my town and can t get enough of it. Love the music, the dance and the story. Thank you for the beautiful video!
Oooohhhhh! As a Spaniard and a fan you, I can't wait for this video! 😊 I didn't expect you do a ballet analysis so soon. I can see you really took to heart the results of the survey 😉
Thank you so much for these ballet analysis videos! They’re very insightful and entertaining! I hope you two release ballet analysis videos! Next one maybe about emerald ?
Kimin Kim was so good in this but- my opinion only - no one compares to Ivan Vasiliev and Natalia Osipova . They were a dream team together. Natalia also ‘killed it’ as Kitri. Loved the way you presented this girls. 🙏🙏🙏🩰🩰🩰👵🇦🇺
I was expecting at least an honorable mention of Carlos Acosta here, he was the hero behind the successful production of Royal Ballet we often see today, everyone can argue about which companies have the best soloists/principal dancers for the main roles but none can match Royal Ballet’s set designs and background details
Like in advance for you. Curious if you would ever consider to analyse the ballet Spartacus? It's quite popular in Russia, but it seems to be, unfortunately, quite a rare performance in the repertoire of the American companies.
I've seen so many versions of this ballet! 🥀🎀 It's one of my favs. It was so great to hear the whole story and see things that I missed when casually watching. I personally would recommend this ballet to anyone who is new to watching ballet.
Royal Ballet’s Mayara Magri and Matthew Ball make a fabulous, powerful and expressive couple . Enjoyed this summary …the dancing, costumes and music all make for a fun, exciting experience.
That was splendid ladies. Not a ballet I was so familiar with but now I feel I have a good understanding. You make learning such fun. Apologies in advance for next week. Will be at Giselle (ENB). Cant wait for that and then to catch up with you
Thanks for this wonderful analysis and deep dive into the history of this ballet. Honorary mention should be given to the music - that iconic dance in the first scene, with the Kitri jetes, is now again playing on a loop in my head. Oh - and thanks for the bloopers you bring after the end: they always leave me laughing so much that my poor dog now firmly thinks his 'ooman becomes a mad woman, regularly once every weekend ... Hugs all round!
I love Don Quixote but the first novel was The Tale of Genji, written a thousand years ago in Japan by the female novelist, Murasaki Shikibu. Also a ballet, though modern, by Nao Kusuzaki. Don Quixote is the first Western novel. Wonderful video…so glad I found your channel.
I absolutely love your full ballet analysises. Don Quiote is one of the ballets i haven't the chance to see a performance of yet, but I absolutely love to listen to the music over and over again.
i love you guys! for my ballet showcase a couple of years ago we did little cupid, queen of the dryads, kitri, dream scene, and finaleof this ballet! it was so cool, thank you for covering this jordan and eden!
I know I'm a bit music-obsessed, so apologies - the music at 14:10 reminds me of Bayadere. Which shouldn't be too much of a surprise lol! Btw I'm not sure if it's still about on YT but the version with Carlos Acosta is amazing (and I am going to see him later in the year Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!)
Don Quixote Hokey Pokey is much more complicated than I had realized! Thank goodness I had you as my guides! My biggest question, which is also incredibly relevant, is: What if the horse poops on stage? I don't understand why Mercedes gets a dance while Porsche and BMW are just left out in the cold? Although the latter two are German automobiles not named after Spanish ladies, it may not have occurred to the Spanish writer de Cervantes, nor to the Russian adapter Petipa. Or was he being petty, Pa? 🧀😬 I was certainly smiling the whole way through this video, which I am going to have to watch several more times to really hammer it home! Not only is this ballet a masterpiece, your explanation of it is absolutely priceless! Reading plot summaries of ballets online is dry and tedious. 😑 Thank goodness for Ballet Reign!! 🙏😍🩰🐴🗡️🛡️💕🌸🌹🎉🎆
The horse is almost certainly rented from one of several companies that specifically train animals for stage/screen acting. If the horse poops on stage, they will presumably clean it up, but they will also probably ask for a partial refund.
We’d probably let Gamache or Sancho take care of it 😆😆🐴. No clue how Mercedes got so lucky, but yeah there’s probably some petty politics involved🤷🏻♀️ Thanks as always for watching, we’re so glad we could make u smile! 😆😆
I'm not a ballet nerd, but I'm starting to become one because of your videos. You have a great insight to ballet and it's give factually, which I love. I'm all for opinions, but I like having facts with it. Well done!
An old dancer, thanking you for this entertaining & informative channel. Keep up the fine work young ladies, enjoyed your excellent presentation right down to your set~ Brava. TY
Omg best video yet! I loved how you used the scenes and the music. Even though it was a pretty long video, it was never boring. You guys are hilarious😂❤
Thanks for this video !! I am going to see Don Quixotte in Paris since I live near the city and I am so excited since I have dance some parts of the ballet when I was younger
omg i've been waiting for the don quixote analysis! it's what's been getting me back into ballet recently so i'm very glad to see you guys talk about it 🙏!! i always love your commentary on ballet, it gives me a bigger appreciation that i didn't have before
I recently got to see a performance of Don Q for the first time and this video really helped me understand the plot and appreciate the ballet, thank you @balletreign!!
I knew this ballet but I have never watched ir in its entirety. After this video I need to find the full version somewhere! Question: have you ever seen the Frankestain ballet by the royal ballet? There is a Magnificent pas de deux in the third act, it is WONDERFUL! maybe a reaction video... some day...?😊
You 2 told the Don Q story so we'll I was laughing so hard even though it had been awhile since I've watched it . Thanks for the well told story❤ you guys made me crack up. ❤you both. Do you still dance. ? I left after 7 yrs of ballet and I really wish I'd stayed in class. Again gracias,, 💐🌺🪻🌷🌹🌻😍🤩😆🩷👍🏻🍾🩰🎻🪇🪈🎼🎶🎵
Loving your full analysis videos. Watched all the classics soooooo many times and am truly enjoying the additional awareness of details I have missed in those ballets. Would love to hear your analysis on Sleeping beauty, La Bayadere, Coppelia and the NutCracker! Thank you for sharing your knowledge in a fun and light way! Delightful!
Very well presented, girls! My favorite scene is the one in the market square which I believe is early in the ballet. I love the Royal Ballet version I have seen on RU-vid featuring Carlos Acosta and Marianella Nunez. I'm sure you know the one I mean.
I've seen a whole bunch of Don Q's, but I didn't know the Gorsky-Petipa story. Thanks so much. Did Gorsky work on anything else I might know or that has endured? Just a comment: I think Minkus was quite a talent, who really isn't as generally respected as he ought to be.
Oo, so sorry. I'm going to be *that* person: in Spanish, the soft "C" isn't pronounced as "CH", as it is in Italian. In Spanish, soft "C" will either sound like "S" the way it does in English, or, if you're pronouncing it as they do in Castilian, you say "TH" as in "Thing". So Dulcinea is not "Dool-chin-ea" but either "Dool-seen-ea" or "Dool-Theen-ea".
Hey guys, what is your opinion about Kitris wedding scene costume? I see some using red and some using white. I will be using white this spring but I've heard some people take the red really seriously. Thoughts?
I missed the premiere because I was watching the European Championships for figure skating, but I am so curious about the plot in comparison to the book, as a literature student from the hispanic world
@@balletreign Unfortunately, I was only able to watch act 1 when I had the Royal Ballet subscription, but this is at the very top of my list of productions to watch. And similarly, I only had to read 8 chapters for class so I still haven't gotten around to finishing the novel. But I do think your analysis of this being a refocusing of the original since that is so extensive to be right. As for Euros, we got 2 and a half ballet programs, which made me very happy. Maybe you could make a short video on Nikita Starostin's short to the PDD from Nutcracker, because I found that he excellently embodied the prince from that iconic part of the ballet.
I really want to see a lesbian version of this ballet, a feminine lesbian basilla (or basillo- might be better not to change the name at all), pursues a masc Kitri and Don Quixote is the one who convinces Lorenzo that lesbians are good and Kitri doesn’t have to marry a man, and they live happily ever after! Thanks for being the real ones and inspiring me (discovering yall in my survey of dance forms college class), to want to pursue ballet at the old age of 21- I might not be able to become a principal ballerina like my inspiration Natalia Osipova but maybe I could do choreography, start my own company, or work for a smaller company while pursuing my other interests as well in a somewhat coherent career/lifestyle including anthropology, ballet, aviation, and gay stuff.
The one thing that really pisses me off about this ballet is that is set in effing BCN when the wedding of Quiteria and Basilio in the book takes place in, you guessed it, La Mancha, which is a completely different region of Spain. Sometimes I truly wonder why foreigners have this unexplainable obsession with BCN. It's not even close to being the most interesting, entertaining or beautiful city in Spain. Not by a long shot. And that's leaving politics out of the equation, cause that's a can of worms that doesn't belong here.
