A dream cast of this Nureyev's Don Quixote! Highlights by the Paris Opera Ballet : Kitri : Sylvie Guillem; Basilio : Nicolas Leriche; Dryad Queen : Agnes Letestu.
even though I am a huge fan of Russian ballet dancers,I must admit Guillem is a great dancer and one of the best ever. The hight of her kick is just breath taking, wow AMAZING! Bravo, standing ovation.
I was totally blown away by all the dancers in this video. Sylvie's presence throughout the whole production was just so charming. I couldn't keep my eyes off her at all. This is ballet at its finest. :)
Woah, a minute into the video and I am already shocked at how good she is as Kitri! Her usage of the fan is unparalleled; sometimes I feel that more recent ballerinas don't use the fan to their advantage. It can be simply sensational when used without fear (of breaking, that is), as demonstrated here. Wonderful Sylvie who never disappoints...!
What a goddess. What an absolute divine beauty. Surely she can't be human. That last développé has just slain me with its painfully pure perfection. The way she raised her leg, it was poetry. It was music. It seems I have me a new all-time favourite dancer.
Sylvie is wonderful. One of my five favourires dancers of all times 😍. She can dance any role and perfect, from Carmen to Giselle. Then is when I see that is a great artist. She has danced the best Raymonda, one of the most difficult roles in a ballet
Guillem is a force of nature, to be sure. Le Riche is on fire here as well (wish there was more of his dancing shown). And Letestu once again shows herself to be the perfect representation of the French school.
I have seen the same at La Scala. Me and my friend were cheering so loud from the stalls that people even complained about us. The atmosphere was like at a rock concert. She had so much temperament and beauty and class that everyone else on stage looked dowdy and meaningless. She upstaged everyone, and especially the poor Roberto Bolle who was simply not in his element as Basilio. Sylvie blew la Scala away that night. She has a heart full of passion. And I pity the ones who could not see that.
@@alainspiteri502 Sure. NOTHING else. We spoke so many times about it privately. We know each other since ever. You know everything about me and what I like. What I know. So why saying it here? (-:
Sylvie is just sensational ! I love how she re-invents each step, the third act's variation was just woaaaa ! I just wanted to underline Letestu's BEAUTIFUL performance as Queen of Dryads. Her extensions are near Guillem's and her legwork is sooo pure ! Her fouettés were so strong ! Even Guillem's are not that strong.
Sylvie interpretation of Dulcinea in PERFECT. She is supposed to be Quioxte's idea of the perfect woman and this is so clear with Sylvie. The role of Dulcinea is overlooked by many and usually danced with just a sweet smile, but Sylvie makes it look like she is actually in love with him. Bravo Sylvie, Bravo
The definitive Kitri of all times. When you see her you see fire, apssion but also elegance and greta beauty something that some of the "celebrated" Russian Kitris of our days tend to forget. The best of the best.
OMG 6:55! Agree with Nakis, and I've seen a lot of Kitris! I notice here she has an exquisite economy of movement I'm not used to seeing because she dances with such panache. (Agnes looks pretty good, too!) Thx for posting!
Guillem is just beyond brilliant! She grabs the character of Katrina by the throat and shakes her up good, but her elegance and passion is all within the bounds of the infinite good taste expected of prima ballerinas! I love watching Letestu, but her characterizations seem to be always the same, I’ve never seen her dance with Guillem’s passion. I certainly can’t imagine her lifting her skirts for the monks, lol! Letestu’s technique and beauty are amazing, but she just never lets herself go.
Why should she be like a Russian ballerina? As good as the Russian school is, the Paris Opera ballet school has its own style. Sylvie has it all, the grace, the beauty, this apparently sublime effortless technique and to top it all this terrific musicality. Surely the best ballerina of this century.
Oh to have some ballets starring Sylvie on DVD! There are few enough of Fonteyn and Ulanova because the technology wasn't around, but Sylvie simply wouldn't allow her work to be filmed (officially) so all we have are these rare precious snippets!!
Wonderful, really dream cast, especially Guillem as Kitri and Letestu as Dryad Queen. I enjoyed that so much that I would really like to see entire spectacle. Maybe one day you'll decide to share it with us?;) And by the way, Guillem in third act has extraordinary white tutu with a long sleeves, just fabulous, gorgeous!
Many of you may posess the language and knowledge regarding technique, but, for me, no other dance has moved me quite like Sylvie. I've relished her every move!
She's one of a kind and an anomaly in her time. I've not seen any ballerina surpass her technically yet. One thing I noticed that I've seen her do a better version of the variation at 3:00 in this video. Not that I'm complaining about this one, but I do wish we had some better video footage of more of her performances. It's ashamed that more of her dances weren't filmed in HD. I seriously hope that they got her in HD in 2011 when she put on pointe shoes again.
I have never found Sylvie's extensions vulgar, in anything she has done. There is a time and place for extension yes but there is never any feeling behind it with other ballerinas, Sylvie is the only exception.
Her “perfect technique” isn’t Russian at all….she’s pure French Opera Ballet! There are a great many people who don’t hold the Russians up as the best in the world anymore. The French had regained their prominence before Nureyev got there, or else he wouldn’t have been able to promote Guillem to Principal so soon after his arrival. The Royal Ballet has also attained huge status in the past 20 years, so now each style of dance is equal in quality to the others, but with technical differences. There are trends in each I’m not terribly excited about these days, but that purely subjective.
@sangfroidjen Which makes it just makes it that more incredible to watch, physically I mean but she puts so much actual artistry into it. That sky high efface develope in her variation, if anyone else would have done that, it would have been criticized as untasteful and vulgar but not her, and it is very easy to make Kitri look like that.
