Melissa Hamilton as the Queen of the Dryads dances in Carlos Acosta's production of Don Quixote for The Royal Ballet, filmed 2013. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/donquixote
Carlos Acosta, Principal Guest Artist of The Royal Ballet, created his first work for the Company in 2013. He chose one of his favourite ballets - Marius Petipa's Don Quixote, a joyful adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes's classic novel. Acosta's production has proved itself a firm audience favourite, acclaimed for its breathtakingly virtuoso dancing, eye-popping designs by Tim Hatley and the sheer energy and exuberance of the production as a whole.
The adventures of the bumbling knight Don Quixote and his ever-faithful squire Sancho Panza have been the inspiration for countless ballets, of which Petipa's is one of the best loved. Acosta has danced the virtuoso role of Basilio many times, and brings that experience to his unique and vibrant vision of the story. Ludwig Minkus’s score, created for Petipa, is full of Spanish flair and atmosphere. Don Quixote, with its famously bravura Act III pas de deux and infectious ebullience, is wonderfully entertaining.

for those in the comments saying she "didnt convey emotion" and they "weren't feeling it," roles in ballet can be interpreted in different ways. i'm a ballet student myself, and i can absolutely see the passion and soul in her dancing. this role is QUEEN of the dryads. queens are often interpreted as regal, not necessarily happy or showy like other beloved roles in ballet. aurora is going to look different than odette, just as the queen of the dryads will look different than juliet, for example. there is no need to bash a dancer, especially an excellent one like melissa hamilton, for their interpretation of a role just because it doesnt look like YOUR favorite ballet role. thank you.

I love how this was danced. The way her leg progressively rises higher to represent a tree taking root and growing…lovely! And the silhouette her fouettés at the end create reminds me of a tree blooming in the spring or summer 🌳 great, nuanced choreography and dancing

She has everything in her locker, both technique and repertoire. That's why Semperoper Ballet negotiated her loan for a year and then extended it to two years, as Principle. She's now back at ROH and taking the lead role in this seasons 'Manon'. Dancers don't get invited to perform with the stars at La Scala and other great companies for nothing Much credit to her, she is a real Ambassador around the World for the in depth talents of Royal Ballet.

Expression comes from the soul, mind and heart......and exhudes through the face, the musicality, the artistry, the expression in the physical movement and the beauty left in the space occupied by the movement. This dancer has it all going on here. Just watching with no critiquing helps us to see and 'feel' this expression going on (the same effect Fonteyn had on viewers). You can do an exceptional performance of technique, just like acrobats, or have a physical facility that 'expresses' beauty without effort, or have a superior dramatic ability - and these talents can be employed without use of any soulful expression going on, and are in action in every ballet company. Expressive artists that dance from the soul are not as common nowadays, but performers like this remind us they're still there.

@buibuiopolismayor7329
@buibuiopolismayor7329 8 лет назад
I always wonder, people say the dancer has no feeling, has no emotion, etc. But take away the face factor. If you were sitting in the Royal Opera House and could not see the face of the dancer, then how would you feel? From that point of view, isn't it more important for the dancer to actually be able to dance and express with their body not their face. But the age have change, with cameras pointed on the dancer's face, does that mean dancers who are expressive facially and pretty will get more recognition than dancers who are technically better and express with their bodies?
@steemdup
@steemdup 8 лет назад
+Buibuiopolis Mayor I agree. I don't care about the face - I want to experience the beauty of ballet by the expressiveness of the dancer's body, the arms, the legs, movement, joy and passion! The face cannot give you all of that.
@hectorjain5678
@hectorjain5678 4 года назад
While I do understand your point of view, I find it important that the dancer is expressive with every fiber of their being. The face is part of the body, so I think it must be as expressive as the body. It always just adds that extra bit of human passion, which enhances the performance much more.
@2charliep
@2charliep 3 года назад
I don’t think it’s about the face, take Marianela for instance she exudes emotion and feeling in every move. It’s about the acting ability of a performer, a good actor should be able to express themselves without words, from any angle and without actually facing the audience.

Not to be mean but some people don’t understand how to take in a dancer's whole performance and need it spelled out for them with a big pageant smile. We were never meant to be able to see super closeups of a dancer's face, their entire body is supposed to be taken as one thing, and also-you cannot expect miracles in that she has very little to work with, which is true of most variations. They don’t move the plot forward, the plot pauses for them to dance, thus there’s little ‘acting' in 'character' that is possible, and more just expressing the abstract concept of the characterization through the movement. And not everyone is going to connect to that the same way.

@@angelgirl8533 I completely disagree. People pay to observe and are therefore allowed to have opinions on it. You can critise a meal if you didn't like it without being a chef, you can dislike a song without being an esucated producer. As long as the critiscism is respectful I don't regard it as rude personally and think it's quite silly to pass it off as "hate". She is beautiful and has amazing technique, the only thing missing is acting and character. I get that monarchs are supposed to be serious but I think there's a way to display that while at the same time making the performance seem more alive and "dryad"-like
@cricketnoise3477
@cricketnoise3477 5 лет назад
This comment section annoys me. People are entitled to their opinion and if they think she didn’t display enough emotion, you just have to accept that. Of course the variation is difficult, but as a dancer you are only excellent if you can make something difficult look effortless. And a lot of people seem to live under the impression that just because you aren’t able to do it better you aren’t allowed to critique her. Like, I can’t cook very well but I know if something doesn’t taste good.

@austinacmes
@austinacmes 7 лет назад
She is the person whom people are PAYING to watch her dance. Of course the public are entitled to share their opinions. A performance critics can write anything they'd like about a dancer's ability to execute and convey artistic values. That has nothing to do with if someone can dance or not. This is a subjective comment with comparison to all other professional level dancers. Yes, she is far away from many of them who can do this variation at a higher technical and artistic level. This is how arts get reviewed and how dancers get better. Your petty reply with reference to YAGP means you can continue to watch ballet like pony tricks shows instead of learning to appreciate it as the art form it is.

Watching Alina Somova's version before this is the worst idea ever. The stark difference between their levels is just too much and it pointed out how heavy, stiff, forced, unhappy and rigid this version is. Also, after watching Alina's version and her beautiful graceful extensions, you can't help but think what a weird and ugly pose/position this dancer has at 0.22. If you guys are looking for a better version, check out Alina ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yI4hN1AiyRQ.html Her gracefulness, her elegance, her balance, her extensions, how she seems to be floating in the air, the way she holds her positions instead of falling out of them like this one.....basically she's like the fairy/nymph she's depicting. I couldn't even see Alina's facial expressions most of the time due to the video quality but the feel that she gives off and her dance is just exquisite. But this version? Sorry, no fairy here.
