Modern comedians are all about shock value, and people like Don RIckles and his generation were able to dish out the humour and take the comebacks too. Everyone is too concerned about not causing any degree of offence so the humour has become sterile and predictable.
Some day (maybe today) being a talkshow host or guest will be considered an art…people will study it in college. These guys were just having fun on tv to hep everybody have a good time. It's like that with so many arts….When Shakespeare and Moliere wrote, theatre was not considered a high art, when Dickens wrote, magazine stories were not considered a high art, same for Chaplin with comedy films, Lucy and Jackie Gleason on tv….when Louis armstrong played, Jazz wasn't considered an art…..the best artists seem to be the people who were just unselfconsciously trying to entertain and make a living…..
Don Rickles was truly one of a kind. He had some material he'd pull out regularly, but still was so quick witted. Just naturally super funny. Miss those nights watching Johnny. No late night host has ever been better.
@@ynotbbq Johnny and Don went way back in nyc, old friends. From what I understand, they did some serious drinking together, but Johnny was a mean drunk, looking for fights.
Carson, Winters, Rickles, Pryor, Dangerfield, Hackett, Williams. All huge comedic talents that will never be replaced and all are gone. Nothing today comes close.
Nutsacker 🥜💼 They all knew each other and had done for years and it shows - there’s an easy manner in they way they rib and reminisce with each other 👍
Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Will Ferrell... etc; and so many younger ones. Don’t fret, there’s hope. 😊 Comedy became an international sport. Great entertainers emerge aaaall the time.
@@BG-ph8hp What?????? Not one of those could wipe the piss off any of those other star's ass... Eddie Murphy was briefly funny but was such a ridiculous egomaniac - the other 3 are media creations and need a laugh track on every one of their works... no talent hacks.
I love watching Don Rickles with Johnny Carson together, they know each other so well! Don Rickles was certainly one of a kind, so quick witted! What a great show!
Oh boy on the verge of another Covid lock down and these Don Rickles videos are priceless. I grew up in the 80s but never appreciated the Tonight Show nor Don until now that I’m in my 40s. That was truly a special era and wish their families nothing but thanks and love
He really was. The chemistry Don and Johnny had was incredible. The other part of their strong relationship was Johnny was known to place loyalty VERY high, and if a celeb wasn't loyal or did something that Johnny felt betrayal by, that celeb (e.g. Joan Rivers, etc.) was essentially dead to him, and he'd never speak to that person again. And Don had often said how much Johnny stood by him over the years, which made their relationship that much stronger, as they were great friends til the end.
You are so right, I have never really watched Don Rickles until this past year and he is hilarious he just comes up with things right off the top of his head kind of like Robin Williams. And that's very rare to get. I am a true fan of Don Rickles now.
12:00min onwards totally killed me: While hitting Don´s wife, Don yelles and cheers Sinatra on"You go, Frank!" and this leg gesture, like pushing the throttle...I´m really crying from laughter! This cures my deepest depressions. Its comedic gold. Nothing...Nothing in todays Comedy world comes close to this master of insult jokes, Don Rickles. I wanted to go to Vegas some years ago and give him a visit, but he sadly died before I could muster up the cash for that trip. What a pitty. But he will not be forgotten and to this day, he is without a doubt the gold standard for this type of humor. Rest in Peace, you marvellous human being, Don.
One of the fun things about Don Rickles was that he could take it just as well as he could dish it out. Look at him laughing whenever Johnny zings him.
watching this on September 30th, a very Happy Birthday ,to my favorite lady, Angie Dickinson!!! Happy 92nd Birthday, to a terrific person. God bless and many more.!!!
Glad they are showing reruns of Johnny's shows on cable TV and satellite radio, he should never be forgotten. Talk shows guest today are either promoting a film or a new CD release.
I don’t Understand what UR Saying, I’m Sorry Can U help.. Don wasn’t his Last Guest it Bette Midler.. Maybe I missed What U meant Can U help Me Out with Ur comment.? Thanks..
i soooooo wish we can go back to thee days. when tv was so great. and the stars were good people. so not like today. and when you can say anything on tv without sissies being offended. all slapstick... miss these greats and miss these days
Johnny Carson was the best Late Show host without exception and no disrespect to Leno, Letterman, Kimmell , etc etc.... and Don Rickles was the King of comedians. All the rest would have loved to be able to insult all the greats like him..... and get away with it !!! He was a genius, most of the time ad libbing to whatever the host would say. Its fantastic that we have You Tube to be able at the press of a button to watch Don and Johnny and all the rest doing their thing and help making our lives funnier and better !
@@BladeRunner-td8be rickles went on Kimmel 15 times He liked Jimmy...Kimmels uncle knew don from his new York days and don knew jimmy since he was a baby . They were close
Carson and Rickles went back decades before this. I love when two old timers get back together and theyre talking joking and laughing it up like old times. 😂
It's all about the Love and the Respect for each other....can u feel it, today it's all cold, very little Love nowadays, if you have or get a little....treasure it, it's golden!! Legends u will never see again.... Lady's and Gentleman... LEGENDS !!!
I meant Don at one of his shows in 2010.. the best ever.. all three are gone.. I watch these all the time it still breaks my heart.. r i p.. love you Don
Mark Shamer The best IMO was one interview on Craig Ferguson when he pointed out an old guy with his mouth open and he said “You can tell he’s old because the mouth can’t close” and does his mouth open face 😂😂😂 I almost cried.
Yes, they are gone. But aren't we the luckiest people on the face of the earth to have been alive to enjoy their special talents and overwhelming humor! Thanks guys!!
Don was quick, spontaneous vicious but good natured quick offensive brilliance....very entertaining...makes us all understand that real comedy takes no prisoners.. all cultures, races, religions and hangups are fair game. If You can't take a joke...tough luck son
Tony George PERFECTLY Said Tony.. IRREPLACEABLE.!! There will Never be anything like those Guys those times..Sinatra,Dino,Rickles, Carson, Bishop etc.. I’d Loved to lived in those times & be with those guys..Compared to 2Day & 2Day celibates..
As unfortunate as that is Don Rickles and Ed McMahon both lived long, healthy and great lives. 88 and 90 are great ages to live until! God bless them and God bless you as well!
Freddy and no one else dared to have a script of lines set up for Don before going on...everyone else was set up and knew what they'd talk about but Rickles was gifted with the sort of freedom in which he could do whatever he wanted..such a treat. Even when Angie was on, he stole the show.
I think Don broke that cigarette box years later and Johnny confronted him about it when Don was doing C.P.O. Sharkey on another set. All in good fun, of course. I think it was around 1989.
Yes the mic above the guest and that music playing is the original as DON came out and it does have that mexican bullfight sound to it!! I just don,t understand why they never put a camera way in back above johnny and show the audience responding every now and then. When DON tells the ORCHESTRA the shipment is coming in soon you,ll note CARSON laughs but a few years later when DON says the remark of the SHIPMENT JOHNNY tells DON-'Oh NO NO NO THEY ARE CLEAN! as this is because of the news reports that a lot of bandleader orchestras were smoking the STUFF so they could be quite AWAKE on the job!!!!
OMG!! What a brilliant mind for comedy in-the-moment!! Don Rickles is a study in what is possibly the most adroit mind ever, in comedy. I have written comedy with successful comedians in the past. There are only two I've encountered who've had that brilliance: Don Rickles would be one (though, I never worked with him). Bobby Rivers is another. Bobby has that very same ability to take the moment as it exists and turn it into comedy gold!!
Don Rickles and Johnny Carson...those two...ARE a HOOT and A HALF....What GREAT ENTERTAINMENT!!..Along with all of us..I SURE MISS THOSE GUYS...but we can see them here..; NOTE: ANGIE D....She sure was a classic sexy Woman/Actress...very smooth indeed; thanks @Arch L superb UPLD...Nostalgic...and Thoroughly entertaining.....(hilarious)........
Me and my bother back in high school days remember don hosting the show for several nights and he tore it up. I mean tore it up. And we knew Johnny was going to be pissed when he got back. But he had us rolling on the flood. Never will forget it, the late night 70's.
Only Don could get away with it, for some reason. People were still touchy about a lot of things. Bill Cosby got in big trouble once because he said, as an outsider, Communion at a Catholic mass looked like individual pizza. He apologized, and it was forgotten. Jimmy the Greek was banned for life because he made an insensitive remark about black people and the history of slavery. One time, Don was on the show with Muhammed Ali, and started doing that African American voice imitation he does, and Muhammed was ready to punch him…Don backed down pretty quick. Don Imus was kicked off the radio for a year because he said a really bad remark about African American women athletes. Everybody apologized, but it was too late.
@@joemarshall4226 I think all these situations you mentioned happened after this Carson episode during the late 80's or beyond. Rickles never was skewered like he would have been today. The Ali situation you wrote about never made the news. The Imus episode happened way after this Carson episode. The country is becoming so politically correct you can't make fun of ANYONE. I don't remember Cosby being criticized in the news about the pizza thing. There's no question these would have been mentioned on CNN if it happened today.
