In this video I demonstrate how reinforcing proper halter training translates into loading into a trailer.
Proper halter training is essential to creating a solid foundation with any donkey. I use tarps as a method to reinforce respect for the halter when teaching ground skills. If done correctly, and consistently, other skills, like trailer loading, are much easier to master for the donkey. Avoid treats, or other bribes to get a donkey to load. Using force is also not the way. I hear people who have put food in the trailer to try and get the equine hunger enough that they'll load. I demonstrated in this video that I can load a donkey who's never voluntarily loaded in a trailer in under 5 minutes. Plus, I used a very small amount if pressure to accomplish this. The secret is respect for the halter.
Sometimes be firm. Never be cruel. Always be patient!
